To stay productive at home, match your routine and workspace to the work, protect attention for tasks that need it, and set clear boundaries between paid work and home responsibilities. A productive day is not simply a longer one: aim to complete meaningful work without letting the workday stretch indefinitely. No single routine fits every job or household, and studies do not show that remote work universally raises or lowers an individual’s productivity.
Choose priorities before the day fills up
Before opening email or chat, write down one or two outcomes that would make the day worthwhile. Keep the list small enough to be realistic; a long inventory of every task can make it harder to decide what deserves attention first.

- Identify the task that needs your best concentration and give it a place on the calendar.
- Group similar work—such as calls, messages, or routine administration—when that reduces repeated switching.
- Leave room for meetings, urgent requests, and the responsibilities you already know are part of your day.
These are practical ways to organize attention, not a formula proven to increase output by a specific amount.
Protect focus while staying reachable
Use a focus block for work that needs concentration
Choose a realistic period for one demanding task and decide what “done” means before you begin. Silence nonessential notifications or close unrelated tabs if your role permits it. If you need to remain available, set a narrower boundary: for example, keep the required work channel open while postponing other alerts.

Make availability understandable to other people
Agree on household cues for when you should not be interrupted and when you can respond. At work, use the status or calendar tools your team already relies on, and tell colleagues when you will next check messages. A focus routine should fit your job’s communication needs rather than treating every interruption as avoidable.
Plan for chores, caregiving, and shared space
Working at home can make it easier to combine paid work with household activity, but overlap is not proof that both tasks are getting done well. Statistics Canada’s analysis of its 2022 Time Use Survey found that, after adjustment, 56% of work-from-home teleworkers participated in multitasking during paid work, compared with 45% of people working at a workplace. Simultaneous unpaid housework was reported for 10% versus 3%, respectively. These figures describe participation, not how long activities overlapped or whether output improved (Statistics Canada, June 5, 2024).

- High-Resilience Molded Foam Seat – Won’t Flatten After 1 Year – Instead of budget foam that hardens and sags within months, the seat is built with high-density, high-resilience molded foam that bounces back day after day. It maintains its shape and cushioning far longer, preventing the “bottoming out” discomfort common at this price point
- Adjustable Lumbar, Not a Fixed Afterthought – Unlike flimsy plastic supports that crack or lose tension, this chair features a durable lumbar mechanism that adjusts depth to match your spine’s natural curve. Genuinely relieves lower back pressure during long sitting sessions
- Breathable Mesh Backrest – No Peeling, No Heat Buildup – Say goodbye to flaking faux leather. The high-tension mesh back promotes continuous airflow, keeping you cool in warm environments and eliminating the mess of peeling upholstery. Mesh holds up significantly better over time and looks professional years later
- Anti-Sink BIFMA Certified Gas Cylinder – A common failure in budget chairs: the pneumatic cylinder loses pressure and slowly sinks during use. Our Class 3 BIFMA-certified gas lift is built to hold its height reliably, so your chair stays exactly where you set it—year after year. No more sudden drops or mid-work adjustments
- Heavy-Duty Metal Core Base (330 lbs Capacity) – Thin plastic bases can crack under stress, especially near the cylinder hub. We use a reinforced nylon base with a metal core, providing the durability and peace of mind you need. Smooth-rolling, 360° silent casters glide across hardwood, tile, or carpet without scratching or catching
Where possible, assign chores to a break or to before or after paid work instead of expecting yourself to handle them invisibly alongside a concentration-heavy task. If you have caregiving duties or share a room, plan around the interruptions you cannot eliminate: use shorter work intervals, identify the most important task for a quieter window, and coordinate coverage or handoffs when that is available. A workable plan is more useful than assuming every home worker has a private office or uninterrupted hours.
Set up a comfortable workstation and sustainable rhythm
Arrange your workstation so it is comfortable for your needs and the work you do. If you use a laptop, changing its position—for example, with an adjustable laptop stand—is one possible way to alter screen positioning, not a universal requirement. The available 2024 review abstract identifies ergonomic workstation arrangement, limiting computer or laptop work time, systematic active breaks, and healthy sleep habits as considerations for visual and musculoskeletal load and overall well-being; it does not prescribe a specific device or break interval (PubMed-indexed review abstract, 2024).

Change position and take active breaks during the day, choosing a rhythm you can sustain rather than relying on a supposedly ideal timer. Protecting sleep also matters to a routine that can continue over time. If discomfort persists, general productivity advice is not a substitute for individualized ergonomic or medical guidance.
Draw a boundary around the workday
Remote work can remove commuting time, but home responsibilities and paid work can also bleed into one another. Set a practical start cue, such as reviewing your priorities, and a stopping point that reflects your agreed hours and workload. At the end, note unfinished items and the next action for each, close work apps where appropriate, and leave the workspace. This brief shutdown helps separate “not finished today” from “must keep working tonight”; it is a boundary strategy, not a measured productivity intervention.

What the evidence says about working from home and productivity
Findings vary with the study period, job, work arrangement, and outcome measured. They should not be read as a guarantee about any one worker’s output.

- The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported industry-level associations: a one-percentage-point increase in the share working remotely was associated with a 0.08-percentage-point increase in total factor productivity growth over 2019–2021, and 0.09 percentage points over 2019–2022. In a comparison with the 2007–2019 trend, the reported association was 0.05 percentage points. These are percentage-point associations across industries, not individual productivity boosts or proof that remote work caused an employee’s output to rise (BLS, 2025).
- A Federal Reserve Board analysis of sector-level “remote ability” found statistically insignificant contemporaneous relationships in its analysis, with positive associations in later estimates. Estimated labor-productivity effects peaked at about three years and multifactor-productivity effects at about six years. This lagged sector-level analysis is not a daily work prescription or a causal estimate for an individual (Maria D. Tito, Federal Reserve Board, August 25, 2025).
- A 2022 systematic review found that 19 of 24 pre-pandemic studies it reviewed reported increased or improved productivity or performance, while COVID-19-specific studies were more mixed: 23% positive, 38% mixed, and 38% negative. The studies reflect different settings, including the distinction between planned, voluntary remote work and the often unplanned home working of 2020–2021; the combined shares are not a forecast for today’s workforce (PLOS ONE, 2022; see also the Swedish review of literature from 2005–2021 and pandemic-era studies).
- A 2025 global survey study found that 70% of respondents agreed or strongly agreed that their home environment enabled them to work productively. That is a reported perception, not an objective output measure or evidence that working at home caused productivity to increase (International Journal of Organizational Analysis, 2025).
Time spent working is also not the same as productivity. Statistics Canada found no statistically significant difference in paid-work time among work-from-home teleworkers, on-site teleworkers, and non-teleworkers after controlling for sociodemographic and job characteristics; the analysis does not measure productivity.

Adapt the routine to the work and the home
Use the parts of this system that fit your circumstances. A concentration-heavy assignment may call for a protected block; collaborative work may require scheduled availability. A quiet room allows different boundaries than a shared space, and fixed hours call for a different plan than a flexible schedule. Keep the routine sustainable enough to allow breaks, a reasonable stopping point, and sleep. The goal is a day that supports the work you actually need to do—not a claim that home working automatically makes anyone more productive.
