Instead, you install compatible apps: some stream free, ad-supported shows, some require subscriptions, and others provide live TV, sports, music or news. This US-focused guide groups 45 services and apps by what they do; availability, catalogs and costs can differ by country and device. Amazon cautions that “App availability varies by region.”
What does “channel” mean on a Fire Stick?
On Fire TV, “channel” is often used loosely to mean a streaming app or service. Fire TV is an app platform, not a cable-style package: apps come from the Amazon Appstore, and each provider controls its own catalog, account rules and subscriptions. Amazon’s overview lists services such as Prime Video, Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, HBO Max, Pluto TV and Tubi, while noting that subscriptions may be required. Amazon Fire TV overview

Some apps also contribute live programming to Fire TV’s Live area. You can browse supported live content from the home screen and customize or favorite channels in the guide, but only participating apps appear there and some require paid subscriptions. Amazon’s Fire TV Live TV instructions
45 Fire Stick channels and apps to consider
The list below is a selection across several viewing styles, not an official Amazon ranking or a promise that every app is available on every Fire TV Stick. Free apps commonly show advertising; paid apps may require a separate subscription. Live-TV services are not interchangeable with on-demand libraries. Check the Amazon Appstore listing and the provider’s terms for your country and specific device before installing or subscribing.

Which Fire Stick channels are free?
Start with free, ad-supported services such as Pluto TV and Tubi, which Amazon itself uses as Fire TV examples. Other candidates in this guide include Xumo Play, Plex, Fawesome, FilmRise, Haystack News and Local Now. “Free” generally means you watch advertising; it does not guarantee that every title or feature is free, available in your country or supported by your device.
Amazon also surfaces free content in its Fire TV experience. Look at the service’s Appstore listing and details in the app before assuming that a particular movie, live feed or feature costs nothing.

Can you watch live TV on a Fire Stick?
Yes, through compatible apps that offer live programming. Fire TV’s Live area can bring supported app content together for browsing, and its guide allows channel customization and favorites. A live-TV app may require a paid plan, and availability in the Live area depends on app participation. Amazon’s October 2026 announcement named DirecTV, Peacock, Sling, Tubi and YouTube TV as examples of services with live content integrated into the experience, but described a US rollout beginning in November on specified models and partner TVs—not an already universal feature.

Do you need subscriptions to use Fire Stick channels?
No subscription is needed to own a Fire TV Stick or install every app, but individual services set their own requirements. Some apps offer free, ad-supported viewing; others require a subscription, provider login or payment for particular titles and features. Buying the device does not include paid subscriptions to Netflix, Disney+, live-TV bundles or other third-party services. Amazon’s overview identifies both free and subscription-based examples and cautions that subscriptions may be required.

How to check whether an app works on your Fire Stick
- Open the Amazon Appstore on Fire TV and search for the service. Amazon recommends checking an app listing’s “Works With” section for device compatibility. Amazon help: compatible apps and games
- Read the provider’s device requirements. Compatibility can depend on Fire TV generation or Fire OS version; for example, Disney+ specifies Fire OS 6.0 or later on its cited support page.
- Check country and account terms. An app may not be offered in your region, and its available catalog or live channels may differ from another country.
- Confirm what is included before subscribing. Review the provider’s current plan, ads, channel lineup, live-event rights and any separate add-on charges.
Amazon’s official pages provide examples, not verification of every app in this list on every Fire TV model. For the model lineup and specifications, see Amazon’s Fire TV device overview.
