To change page numbering on a later page in Google Docs, insert a section break before that page, then open Insert > Page elements > Page number > More options. Choose where the change applies under Apply to and click Apply. These instructions are for Google Docs on a computer in Pages format.
Prepare the document
Google Docs makes page-number changes through page and section controls. Those breaks are unavailable in Pageless format, so first confirm the document uses Pages format. The steps below apply to the computer version of Docs; equivalent steps in the mobile apps are not established by Google’s cited help.

Start numbering changes on a later page
- Place the cursor at the end of the content before the page where the change should begin.
- Choose Insert > Break > Section break (next page). Google Docs also offers a continuous section break; use the next-page option when the new section must begin on a new page. Google’s help for page and section breaks explains the available break types.
- Choose Insert > Page elements > Page number > More options.
- Under Apply to, select the page or section for the change, then click Apply. Google says page numbers can be added to an entire document or a document section, and its controls can apply changes to selected pages or sections. See Google Docs Editors Help: Use headers, footers, page numbers and footnotes – Computer.
If “Apply to” is missing
Google directs users to add a section break when the Apply to choice is not available. Insert the break before the intended change, then reopen the page-number options.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoose the right section break
- Section break (next page): begins the new section on the following page, which suits a numbering change that starts on a later page.
- Section break (continuous): starts a new section without requiring it to begin on a new page. Google Docs lists this option alongside the next-page break.
Use the continuous option only when the section should continue on the same page; otherwise the next-page break provides a clear page boundary.
