Start by treating The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom as a world to investigate, not a checklist to clear. Learn the abilities on Great Sky Island, follow the early main quest far enough to gain useful tools such as the paraglider and camera, then explore at your own pace. When you are unsure where to go, look for an unvisited area, try an ability or Zonai device in a new way, and talk to nearby characters.
Use Great Sky Island to learn the game’s cues
The opening area is a tutorial, but it is also an early lesson in how the game expects you to explore. Nintendo’s beginner guide recommends paying attention to the surroundings, using recently acquired items and abilities to solve challenges, and speaking with the golem for guidance. If a puzzle or route seems unclear, look around before assuming you need a more complicated solution: the environment may point toward what to try next.

Play Nintendo’s early tips focus on learning the four abilities and finding the way off Great Sky Island. Give yourself time to understand what each ability can do, but do not treat every optional discovery as a prerequisite for leaving. The goal is to build confidence with the tools the game has introduced, not to exhaust the island before continuing.

Follow the early story for useful milestones
Once you reach Hyrule, the main quest provides orientation and can help you reach practical early milestones, including the paraglider and camera. Following the story far enough to obtain these tools gives you more ways to navigate and record what you find; after that, you can let curiosity take over rather than following every quest marker in sequence.
#1 Best Overall
- Enhanced performance and visuals exclusive to the Nintendo Switch 2.
- Explore the skies, caves, and vast lands of Hyrule in a massive open-world adventure.
- Wield new and returning abilities to craft solutions, vehicles, and weapons.
- Discover the mystery behind the spreading gloom threatening the kingdom.
- Use the ZELDA NOTES app to share, compare, and earn daily bonuses.
There is no single route that every player needs to follow. Nintendo says that each player’s exploration experience will differ, so a useful balance is to use the main quest when you want direction and step away from it when something nearby catches your attention.
Make “look, try, ask” your way out of a dead end
Nintendo Support’s practical advice for getting unstuck is to search areas you have not visited, experiment with Link’s abilities and Zonai devices in new ways, and talk to characters. Turn that into a simple habit whenever progress stalls:
Rank #2
- Ultrahand: Using the new Ultrahand ability, Link can pick up, move, and rotate almost any object, and can even attach objects together to create bridges, vehicles, and more!
- Fuse: Magically fuse almost any object to Link’s current weapon, shield, or arrow to increase durability, damage, or even add a new effect. Experiment with lots of different combinations to come up with surprising—and sometimes hilarious—results!
- Ascend: Add a new dimension to your exploration with Ascend, which gives Link the ability to pass through solid objects above him. Rise up through ceilings, hillsides, and even certain enemies to create seemingly impossible shortcuts.
- Recall: Use Recall to make objects in motion move backward through time, letting Link ride fallen boulders skyward, recover thrown weapons, or send projectiles back where they came from.
- Look: Check the terrain and nearby routes. Is there a ledge, structure, or direction you have not explored yet?
- Try: Reconsider the objects and abilities available to you. A different use of an ability or Zonai device may reveal a route or solution.
- Ask: Speak with nearby characters, who may offer information or clues.
These are prompts for exploration, not a mandatory sequence. The point is to keep investigating instead of assuming there is one correct path or that a missed clue has spoiled the adventure.
Remember that exploration spans more than the surface
Nintendo describes the adventure across Hyrule’s land and floating islands in the sky, and its beginner guide also covers the Depths. Keep all three spaces in mind as you play: exploration is not limited to the ground-level landscape. These broad settings are a reminder to stay open to different kinds of destinations, not a claim that any one guide provides a complete inventory of secrets or a definitive route through them.

Choose guidance when you want it, freedom when you do not
The main quest is useful for early structure and key tools; free exploration is useful when you want to follow your own questions. Switch between them as needed. If you want a nudge, return to a quest objective or ask a character for information. If you feel ready to wander, investigate an unvisited place or experiment with what you already have. Since Nintendo’s guidance does not prescribe one complete route, no checklist can guarantee that you will find every secret.

The game is listed for the Nintendo Switch family of systems on Nintendo’s official Tears of the Kingdom page. The beginner guidance cited here does not establish that a particular accessory is required for exploration, so you can focus on the game’s abilities, surroundings, and characters rather than buying an add-on as a supposed prerequisite.
