To start Classic Outlook for Windows in safe mode, close Outlook, press Windows+R, enter outlook.exe /safe, and select OK. If Outlook then works in safe mode but not during normal startup, an add-in may be contributing to the problem. You can temporarily disable COM add-ins in Outlook’s settings, then re-enable them one at a time to identify a likely trigger.
Confirm you’re using Classic Outlook
The COM Add-ins settings and outlook.exe /safe procedure below apply to Classic Outlook for Windows. Microsoft says COM add-ins continue to work in Classic Outlook but are not supported in new Outlook for Windows. Its command reference uses outlook.exe for Classic Outlook and olk.exe for new Outlook. If the app you have open is new Outlook, these steps will not provide the same COM add-in controls. See Microsoft’s guidance on add-in warnings in Classic Outlook and its Office command-line switches.

Temporarily disable COM add-ins
If Outlook opens in safe mode, use its built-in settings to turn off the add-ins without uninstalling them. Record which add-ins are checked before changing anything so you can restore the previous configuration.

- In Outlook, select File > Options > Add-ins.
- In the Manage box, choose COM Add-ins, then select Go.
- Take a screenshot or write down which add-ins are checked.
- Clear the checked boxes and select OK. Do not select Remove; Microsoft warns that Remove can delete an add-in, while clearing its checkbox disables it.
- Exit Outlook and start it normally.
These steps follow Microsoft’s startup error and add-in isolation instructions.
Test add-ins one at a time
If normal startup works with the add-ins disabled, re-enable the ones you originally had checked individually. After each change, close Outlook and start it again. If the original problem returns after enabling an add-in, that add-in is a likely contributor—not definitive proof that it is the only cause. Microsoft notes that more than one add-in can be involved, so continue testing the full set that was originally enabled.

What to do if safe mode does not solve the startup problem
If Outlook still will not start in safe mode, the add-in-isolation result does not point to a cause. Continue with Microsoft’s broader Outlook startup troubleshooting. Its guidance includes creating a new Outlook profile; data-file repair and Office repair are also possible next steps.

Microsoft documented an incident beginning around March 12, 2026, in which Classic Outlook could crash and prompt for Safe Mode when older Outlook builds were used with Teams Meeting Add-in build 1.26.02603. Microsoft’s incident page, last updated March 27, 2026, says updates fixed the issue and recommends updating Office; temporarily disabling the Teams Meeting Add-in was a workaround for people who needed to remain on an older Office build. This applies to the specific build combination Microsoft described, not every Outlook safe-mode prompt. Check Microsoft’s current incident page for the latest status.
