Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To start an already-working FFmpeg YouTube stream automatically after a Raspberry Pi reboots, run FFmpeg as a systemd service. Save the command in a service unit, make the unit wait for the network target, keep the stream key in a restricted file, then enable the service and verify both its logs and YouTube Studio preview. A running FFmpeg process is not proof that YouTube is receiving a healthy picture.
Before you automate the stream
This procedure assumes your FFmpeg command already works when you run it manually and that YouTube Live is set up for the channel. A systemd service can launch that command at boot and restart its process after it exits; it does not create a YouTube broadcast or validate the picture for you. The service unit below is a pattern: adapt its user, paths, input, codecs and command to your setup. For another example of the systemd approach, see StreamNeo’s FFmpeg systemd guide.

- Find the absolute path to FFmpeg with
command -v ffmpeg; the example below uses/usr/bin/ffmpeg. - Choose the Linux account that should run the stream. The example uses the existing
piaccount; use your actual account if it is different. - Make sure that account can read the video or other input and can read the directory containing it.
- Have a working YouTube stream key. Treat it like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
1. Store the stream key in a restricted file
Create a service-specific environment file rather than putting the key in a public script or typing it into a command that may be saved in shell history. The following commands create a root-owned file readable by the pi group. Change that group if your service runs under a different account.

Create the file:

Edit it:
sudo nano /etc/ffmpeg-youtube.env -
Add this line, replacing the value with your YouTube stream key:
STREAM_KEY=replace_this_with_your_actual_key -
Save and exit. Keep the file readable only by root and the service group; do not add it to a public repository or share it in logs or screenshots.
Systemd reads this file as service environment. In the unit below, ${STREAM_KEY} is expanded by systemd in the ExecStart argument; it is not shell command substitution.
2. Create the systemd service
Create a unit file:
sudo nano /etc/systemd/system/ffmpeg-youtube.service

- CanaKit Turbine Black Case for the Raspberry Pi 5
- CanaKit Low Noise Bearing System Fan
- Mega Heat Sink - Black Anodized
Use this as a starting point, replacing the input path and the sample FFmpeg options with the command that you have already tested:
[Unit]
Description=FFmpeg YouTube stream
Wants=network-online.target
After=network-online.target
[Service]
Type=simple
User=pi
WorkingDirectory=/home/pi
EnvironmentFile=/etc/ffmpeg-youtube.env
ExecStart=/usr/bin/ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /home/pi/video.mp4 -c:v copy -c:a copy -f flv rtmp://a.rtmp.youtube.com/live2/${STREAM_KEY}
Restart=always
RestartSec=10
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
Match the FFmpeg command to your input
The sample uses a local video file and loops it. -re reads the file at its intended rate, and -stream_loop -1 asks FFmpeg to repeat it indefinitely. -c:v copy -c:a copy copies the existing audio and video streams without re-encoding; it is suitable only if the media is compatible with the stream you intend to send. If the command that works for you uses different codecs, filters, audio handling or a different input, carry those options into ExecStart instead of copying this example literally. A camera or other live input also needs to be available when the service starts; a video-file loop and a camera stream are not interchangeable.
Why the network settings are not a connectivity guarantee
Wants=network-online.target requests the network-online target, and After=network-online.target orders this service after it. These settings express boot ordering; they do not certify that DNS, routing, Wi-Fi, or the path to YouTube’s ingest server is working. Network-online behavior also depends on the system’s network manager and wait-online configuration.
Choose restart behavior deliberately
Restart=always tells systemd to restart the process when it exits, including after a clean exit, with the delay set by RestartSec=10. That can help recover from a process exit, but it cannot correct a bad key, missing input, invalid command or YouTube-side broadcast problem. Nor can it necessarily recover a process that remains running but is stuck. If a clean FFmpeg exit should end your stream rather than restart it, choose a different restart policy based on that requirement.

3. Reload systemd and start the service
-
After saving the unit, have systemd read the new configuration:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload -
Start the service now and enable it to start on future boots:
sudo systemctl enable --now ffmpeg-youtube.service -
Inspect the service state:
sudo systemctl status ffmpeg-youtube.service -
Follow its logs while checking startup or diagnosing a problem:

4. Verify the stream after reboot
-
Reboot the Raspberry Pi:
sudo reboot -
After it comes back, check the service:
sudo systemctl status ffmpeg-youtube.service -
Review recent output for FFmpeg startup errors or repeated restarts:
sudo journalctl -u ffmpeg-youtube.service -b --no-pager -
Open YouTube Studio and check the relevant live stream’s preview or output. Confirm that it is receiving the expected video and audio; do not infer stream health from systemd’s
active (running)state alone.Recommended Free Tools

Troubleshooting
Systemd reports 203/EXEC or cannot start FFmpeg
- Check that the binary path in
ExecStartis correct withcommand -v ffmpeg, and update it if necessary. - Check the unit syntax and read the error details with
sudo systemctl status ffmpeg-youtube.serviceandsudo journalctl -u ffmpeg-youtube.service -b. - If
ExecStartcalls a wrapper script instead, verify its path, executable permission and interpreter line.
FFmpeg starts, then exits repeatedly
- Read the unit journal for the FFmpeg error. Check that the input file exists and that the service user can read it.
- Confirm the environment file exists, its permissions allow the service to read it, and the variable name in it matches the one used by the unit.
- Check that your manually tested command still works with the same input, options and stream key. A restart policy repeats a failed attempt; it does not fix the reason for failure.
The service is active but YouTube has no picture
Inspect FFmpeg’s output and the YouTube Studio preview separately. The process can remain active even when the input, network path or broadcast is not delivering a usable picture. A Raspberry Pi camera stream may also have a camera-side fault that persists across a Pi reboot; in that case, investigate the camera and its stream condition rather than assuming systemd is the cause. A forum discussion documents this type of boundary between service behavior and the camera source: Raspberry Pi Forums: “How to gently terminate ffmpeg when called from a service?”.
The service starts before the stream source is ready
The network-online target does not wait for a camera, mounted drive or every external service your input depends on. Confirm those dependencies separately and adjust service ordering or add a suitable readiness check for your setup. Network ordering is useful, but it is not a substitute for testing the actual input and ingest path.
Copyright and YouTube Live checks
Automatic playback does not change your rights or YouTube’s rules. Before looping a recording, confirm you have permission to use its video and audio, including music, and check the applicable YouTube Live requirements for your channel and content. A stream that starts successfully can still face a copyright claim or other platform action. Use YouTube Studio to monitor the broadcast itself, not just the local process.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor an additional pre-stream checklist, see StreamNeo’s copyright safety checklist. For background on Raspberry Pi loop trade-offs, see Raspberry Pi 24/7 YouTube Loop: What Works and What Melts.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not maintain a Raspberry Pi service, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos as a 24/7 YouTube stream. Upload your recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams the upload at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start your free day.
