1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUpload your video files to the VPS over SSH, arrange them in an FFmpeg concat list, then send the encoded output to the RTMPS server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio. The workflow below covers transfer, playlist order, encoder settings, YouTube checks, and common failures.
Before you start
Confirm YouTube Live access
Your channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select an encoder stream. Copy the server URL and stream key; treat the key like a password. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance also covers stream setup and rights requirements.

Check the VPS and source files
You need SSH access to the VPS, enough free disk space for the video files, and permission to write to the destination directory. The account name, hostname, SSH port, and destination path depend on your VPS configuration. Confirm that the VPS has enough CPU for encoding and sustained outbound bandwidth for the stream; exact limits vary by provider and plan.
Use only videos and audio you have the rights to stream, and follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines. Copyright and reused-content decisions depend on the content and applicable circumstances; a technically successful stream does not establish permission or guarantee monetization.

Transfer the videos to the VPS
Create a destination directory
Connect to the VPS with SSH and create a directory for the playlist. For example:
ssh user@host
sudo mkdir -p /srv/stream/videos
sudo chown user:user /srv/stream/videos
Replace user and host with your VPS account and hostname. Use a path and ownership appropriate to your server; you may not need sudo if the directory is already writable by your account.

| Method | Example | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| SCP | scp -r ./videos user@host:/srv/stream/videos/ |
A straightforward one-time directory upload. OpenSSH’s current scp documentation describes file copying over SSH; scp uses SFTP by default in current documentation. |
| SFTP | sftp user@host, then use put or put -r for files or directories |
Interactive transfer, including when you prefer a graphical SFTP client. SFTP operates over encrypted SSH; see the OpenSSH SFTP manual. |
| rsync over SSH | rsync -av --progress ./videos/ user@host:/srv/stream/videos/ |
Repeat synchronization. It can avoid retransmitting unchanged file data; the trailing slash on ./videos/ means to copy the directory’s contents into the destination. |
For the rsync command, install rsync on both machines if it is not already available. The rsync manual documents its transfer options.
Verify the upload
Compare the local and remote file counts and sizes, then inspect or play a sample file on the VPS before building the stream. For important media, compare checksums generated on both machines. A transfer finishing without an error is useful, but checking the files catches omissions, truncation, or a wrong destination.
Build an ordered playlist for FFmpeg
On the VPS, create /srv/stream/videos/playlist.txt. Put a header followed by one relative filename per clip, in the order you want them played:

ffconcat version 1.0
file 'clip01.mp4'
file 'clip02.mp4'
file 'clip03.mp4'
Keep the list beside the media and use simple filenames. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads the listed inputs one after another. Its default safe-path mode accepts relative paths made from portable characters, which is why this layout works with -safe 1.
Concat works best when the files have matching stream layouts and compatible codecs and time bases. A change in resolution, frame rate, audio layout, or other stream parameters may cause errors or discontinuity. Incorrect duration information or truncated inputs can introduce gaps or artifacts. If the clips are not compatible, re-encode them to consistent parameters or use a different workflow rather than assuming concat will normalize them.
Send the playlist to YouTube with FFmpeg
Example command
Run this on the VPS, changing the ingest URL to the exact RTMPS server URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room:

ffmpeg -re -f concat -safe 1 -i /srv/stream/videos/playlist.txt
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 4500k -maxrate 4500k -bufsize 9000k
-pix_fmt yuv420p -g 60 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv 'rtmps://SERVER/APP/STREAM_KEY'
This is an illustrative compatibility-oriented example, not a universal preset. Its bitrate and keyframe setting may not suit your source resolution, frame rate, or current YouTube ingest configuration. Substitute the full URL and key exactly as provided; keep the key private and do not place it in public scripts, screenshots, or logs.
What the important options do
-rereads file input at its native rate, pacing playback instead of sending the file as fast as possible.-f concat -safe 1 -i ...tells FFmpeg to read the ordered concat list using safe relative paths.-c:v libx264and-c:a aacre-encode video and audio into widely supported formats. Re-encoding can make inputs more consistent, but uses VPS CPU.-b:v,-maxrate, and-bufsizeset example video rate-control values. Choose values appropriate to the output and YouTube’s current guidance.-pix_fmt yuv420pselects a broadly compatible pixel format;-g 60sets a 60-frame GOP in this example. The correct GOP length depends on frame rate.-b:a 128k -ar 44100set example audio bitrate and sample rate.-f flvselects the output container used for the RTMPS ingest example.
YouTube’s encoder recommendations list H.264, HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and recommend a two-second keyframe interval, not over four seconds. Match the keyframe interval to your output frame rate—for example, 60 frames at 30 fps is two seconds. Use YouTube’s current settings for your chosen resolution and frame rate rather than treating the sample bitrate above as a platform requirement.
When stream-copy may work
If all playlist files already have compatible streams and parameters, stream-copy may reduce CPU use by avoiding re-encoding. It does not convert codecs or make mismatched clips compatible. Check the actual codecs, dimensions, frame rates, audio streams, and time bases first; if they differ, re-encoding to a consistent output is usually the more compatible approach.

Preview and monitor the live feed
- Start FFmpeg and check its output for connection or encoding errors.
- In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, wait for the incoming preview and inspect picture, sound, and stream health before going live.
- Monitor the VPS CPU, memory, disk space, and network throughput while the playlist runs.
- Test ahead of time. YouTube advises having upload capacity with 20% headroom and checking the actual feed; see its streaming setup guidance.
The VPS needs reliable outbound capacity throughout the stream, not just enough bandwidth to upload the files. Uploading media to the VPS and sending the live encoder feed are separate network demands.
Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| SSH reports permission denied | Wrong account, key, or SSH configuration. | Confirm the VPS username, hostname, port, and authorized SSH key. Check the provider’s connection details. |
| Transfer fails or files are missing | Insufficient destination space, interrupted connection, or incorrect remote path. | Check free disk space and directory permissions, verify the destination, then retry. Use rsync for repeat syncs and compare counts and sizes afterward. |
| FFmpeg cannot open the playlist or a clip | Wrong list path, typo, filename mismatch, or unsafe/unsupported path. | Check that the list exists at the path in -i, filenames match exactly, and media files are readable. Use relative filenames in a list beside the clips. |
| Concat reports stream or timestamp errors | Inputs have incompatible stream layouts, codecs, time bases, or damaged/truncated media. | Inspect each input and make their streams compatible; re-encode to consistent parameters if needed. Check duration metadata and test the clips individually. |
| YouTube does not receive the feed | Incorrect RTMPS URL or stream key, network egress block, or failed FFmpeg connection. | Copy the server URL and key again from Live Control Room, confirm outbound connectivity and FFmpeg’s error output, and keep the key private. |
| Video stutters or stream health degrades | Insufficient VPS CPU, outbound bandwidth, or unstable connectivity; settings may also be unsuitable. | Check CPU and network use, lower the output load if appropriate, and ensure upload capacity has headroom. Test the actual feed before relying on it. |
| Audio is silent or out of sync | Missing or inconsistent audio streams, concat incompatibility, or source timing problems. | Check each clip for an audio stream and compatible timing. Test a single clip, then the full concat list, and re-encode consistently if needed. |
