To start a YouTube live stream, first make sure your channel is verified and has had no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. Then choose a method—mobile, webcam, encoder, or console—set it up, check the preview and audio, and select Go live. Phone streaming has extra eligibility requirements; the other methods suit different kinds of broadcasts.

Check your channel’s eligibility first

YouTube’s general guidance says your channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube also sets a minimum age of 16 for live streaming. Check the current requirements in YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance before planning a broadcast, since requirements and interface labels can change.

If you plan to stream from a phone

Mobile streaming has additional requirements: at least 50 subscribers, a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, live streaming enabled, and a device running Android 8.0 or later or iOS 8 or later. After enabling live streaming for the first time, activation may take up to 24 hours. These mobile thresholds do not automatically apply to webcam, encoder, or console streams. See YouTube’s mobile live-streaming instructions.

Choose the right way to go live

Method Best for What you need Trade-off
Mobile Quick updates, vlogging, or footage captured on the go A qualifying phone or tablet, an eligible channel, and mobile live streaming enabled Portable and convenient, but the mobile subscriber and device requirements apply.
Webcam A straightforward camera broadcast from a computer A computer with a webcam Simple to set up, but less suited to elaborate layouts or multiple external sources.
Encoder Gameplay, screen sharing, overlays, external devices, or a more produced event Streaming software or hardware, plus the YouTube stream URL and key Offers more production control, with more configuration and testing to do.
Console Direct gameplay broadcast from a supported modern console A compatible console and its maker’s streaming instructions Convenient for gameplay, but steps vary by console.

YouTube describes these four routes in its live-streaming setup guidance and encoder instructions. Pick the simplest method that fits what you want viewers to see.

  1. Connect or enable the webcam on your computer and check that the computer can use its microphone.
  2. Open YouTube’s webcam live-streaming flow and follow its prompts to provide the stream details and select the camera and microphone.

Encoder: stream gameplay, a screen, or a production

  1. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. Treat the key as private: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
  3. In your encoder software or hardware, enter YouTube’s stream URL and key. Configure the connected camera, microphone, screen, or other sources in the encoder.
  4. Start sending the feed from the encoder. Wait for the incoming preview to appear in Live Control Room and check that the picture and sound are right.
  5. When ready, select Go live in YouTube. At the end, end the broadcast in YouTube and stop sending the encoder feed.

YouTube’s encoder workflow requires the stream URL and key; see Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder for the current interface and steps.

Console: broadcast directly from gameplay

Modern PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo consoles support direct streaming, but the setup differs by device and can change with software updates. Use the console maker’s current manual for account linking, broadcast controls, and audio or camera options rather than applying encoder steps intended for a computer.

For those looking to fine-tune image parameters or enhance sound quality, EMEETLINK software is available for advanced customization. Both simplicity and advanced needs can be met effortlessly.

Test before your audience arrives

  • Do a short test stream before an important event. Use an unlisted or otherwise non-public option if appropriate for your test, and check who can access it before sharing a link.
  • Watch the incoming preview in Live Control Room before going live; a connected encoder alone does not confirm that viewers will see the intended picture and sound.
  • Listen for clear audio and watch for picture problems. Monitor both during the event, not only during setup.
  • For an encoder event, check that the watch page is reachable and that the stream works on mobile devices.

YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend testing, reviewing the preview, and monitoring stream quality.

Equipment: start with what your method needs

A webcam stream requires a computer with a webcam. For an encoder setup, a webcam and microphone are typical equipment, but the sources depend on the production: gameplay or a screen share may not need a camera. YouTube says beginners do not need expensive equipment to get started. Use equipment you already have, then add gear only if a specific limitation—such as unclear speech—needs fixing.

Common setup problems and fixes

  • Mobile live streaming is unavailable: Check the mobile-specific subscriber, channel, and device requirements. If you just enabled live streaming, allow up to 24 hours for the first activation.
  • The encoder feed does not appear in Live Control Room: Confirm that you entered the stream URL and key for the intended stream, that the encoder is sending, and that you are looking at that stream’s preview.
  • The preview appears, but the stream is not public: Receiving an encoder feed and going live are separate steps. Review the preview, then select Go live in YouTube when ready.
  • Viewers cannot hear you clearly: Check that the intended microphone is selected and connected, and monitor the audio in the preview or test stream before the event.
  • The wrong content or account is being broadcast: Before going live, verify the selected channel, stream details, source, and audience visibility. If an encoder key may have been exposed, replace or reset it through YouTube’s live controls.

Copyright and YouTube live-stream rules

Use video, music, and other material you have the rights or permission to broadcast. A live stream can be interrupted or restricted if it violates YouTube’s policies or rights-holder requirements. Also make sure the channel satisfies the eligibility rules before the event; a test does not remove a restriction or grant permission to use someone else’s content. Check YouTube’s current live-streaming guidance and applicable policies if you are unsure.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep a prerecorded video or playlist live on YouTube continuously, rather than broadcast a camera or live production, StreamNeo is a cloud option. It streams the files as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. This is for uploaded video streams to YouTube, not camera-based live broadcasting. Start your free StreamNeo day.
