The installer uses the target machine’s disks, so back up anything important and verify the disk selection before proceeding. Once installed, you manage the host in a web browser.
Proxmox VE is a bare-metal virtualization platform: it runs on the physical host rather than inside another desktop operating system, and lets you run virtual machines and other services on that host. The official downloads listing showed Proxmox VE 9.2-1, updated May 21, 2026, when checked for this article; confirm the current release on the official downloads page before installing.

What hardware do you need for a Proxmox home lab?
Start with compatibility and the jobs you want the host to do—not a particular form factor. Proxmox’s hardware requirements recommend a 64-bit Intel or AMD processor with Intel VT or AMD-V support. The requirements also list 64-bit Armv9-A or newer as an alternative architecture. For x86 KVM full virtualization, the processor and motherboard must support Intel VT or AMD-V.

Processor and firmware
Check the exact processor’s specifications before buying or repurposing a computer. Also check that virtualization can be enabled in its firmware settings; do not assume a machine supports it simply because it is a recent desktop or mini PC. If you plan to pass a PCIe device through to a virtual machine, Proxmox says the CPU must support VT-d or AMD-Vi. Passthrough is an optional advanced use, not a requirement for a basic host.

Memory for the host and its guests
Proxmox lists 2 GB of memory for the operating system and Proxmox VE services, before allocating memory to virtual machines or other guests. Its 1 GB minimum is for evaluation only, not a practical general-purpose build target. The requirements page also estimates approximately 1 GB of additional memory per TB of used storage for ZFS or Ceph. These are platform figures, not a universal total-RAM recommendation: choose capacity for the operating system, planned guests, and storage configuration together.
Storage: decide on the layout before installation
Proxmox recommends fast, redundant storage and says SSDs give the best results. A single local disk is simpler to start with, but it does not provide disk redundancy. A redundant arrangement can improve availability if a disk fails, but it does not replace a separate backup. Choose enough capacity for the host and the virtual machines or services you plan to store; the requirements do not establish a universal capacity for a home lab.

Proxmox describes two distinct approaches: hardware RAID with a battery-backed write cache, or non-RAID storage with ZFS. Its requirements explicitly warn that ZFS and Ceph are not compatible with a hardware RAID controller. Do not put ZFS on top of such a controller. If you are unsure which layout suits your goals, keep the first installation simple and understand how the selected storage is configured before committing valuable data to it.
Network and expansion
The requirements list redundant gigabit network interfaces among recommended hardware and note support for 10 Gbit and faster networking. These are expansion considerations, not prerequisites for a basic single-host installation. Proxmox also supports NAS, shared, and distributed storage, which can be useful as a lab grows but are optional for a starter host.

How should you choose a first host?
A compact computer can be a sensible low-demand host if its exact processor supports virtualization and it has enough memory, storage, and networking for your intended guests. Treat “mini PC” as a size category, not a compatibility guarantee. A larger computer may make it easier to add memory, disks, network cards, or passthrough devices; whether that flexibility matters depends on your plans.
| Choice | What to check | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Compact mini PC | Exact CPU virtualization support; memory capacity and upgradeability; storage capacity; network interfaces | A small, low-demand lab with a defined workload |
| Expandable desktop or server | CPU and firmware virtualization support; available memory slots, drive connections, network options, and any passthrough requirements | A lab expected to grow or use additional hardware |
Before settling on either type, list the virtual machines and services you expect to run, then check whether the host can provide their memory and storage needs while still running Proxmox. Compare actual specifications rather than relying on a product label or the host’s physical size.

How do you install Proxmox VE?
The installer USB or CD/DVD is boot media; it is not the persistent storage plan for the host or its virtual machines. Proxmox’s installation overview describes a bare-metal installation and warns that data on selected disks will be removed. Back up important files and identify the intended target disk before starting.

- Check compatibility. Review the system requirements, verify CPU and motherboard virtualization support, and make sure the host’s firmware permits it.
- Download the installer. Get the current Proxmox VE ISO from the official downloads page. The listing showed version 9.2-1, last updated May 21, 2026, at the time noted above; releases can change.
- Write the ISO to boot media. Prepare a USB flash drive or CD/DVD using the ISO. This media starts the installer; it is not a substitute for the host’s persistent storage.
- Boot the dedicated target machine. Start the computer from the prepared installer media and follow the installation wizard. For current screen details and options, consult the official Proxmox VE documentation.
- Select the installation disk carefully. Confirm the intended target and storage layout before continuing. Proxmox cautions that existing data on selected disks will be removed, so do not proceed if you have not backed up data you need.
- Manage the installed host in a browser. Proxmox says the host can be configured through its web interface without a separate management tool. Use the address and access details shown by the installation process and follow the official documentation for the current interface.
What should you avoid when planning the setup?
- Buying before checking virtualization support: confirm the exact CPU and motherboard support the features your planned setup needs.
- Treating minimum RAM as a build recommendation: the evaluation minimum and host-only memory figures do not include the needs of your guests.
- Mixing incompatible storage approaches: do not place ZFS or Ceph behind a hardware RAID controller, and decide on the intended storage layout before installation.
- Assuming redundancy is a backup: disk redundancy and independent backups address different risks.
- Confusing installer media with server storage: the USB drive or disc launches setup; plan separate persistent storage for the installed system and guests.
- Choosing the wrong target disk: selected disks are subject to data removal during the bare-metal installation. Check the disk and back up first.
- Overbuilding networking before you need it: faster links, redundant interfaces, and shared storage can support future growth, but are not necessary prerequisites for one host.
