There is no documented method that starts every powered-off Lenovo laptop without its power button. Some models have an emergency-reset hole that can help with a no-power problem; some IdeaPads have a Novo button that opens recovery, BIOS, or boot options. Neither is a universal replacement for a failed power button. Identify your exact model and check its Lenovo guide before pressing any pinhole.
First, work out whether the laptop is off or unresponsive
A laptop that is asleep, showing a black screen, or frozen may need different troubleshooting from one that is fully shut down. A keyboard or lid action that wakes a sleeping computer does not show that it can start from a full shutdown. Lenovo’s documented procedures here cover power troubleshooting, reset controls, and Novo menus; they do not establish that a keyboard, mouse, lid, or USB device can start any Lenovo model from powered off.

Find the model name or machine type on the laptop label, packaging, Lenovo account, or device records. Use that exact information to locate the corresponding Lenovo user guide and confirm whether the controls described below exist and where they are located.

- Connect the correct AC adapter directly to a wall outlet and look for charging or power indicators.
- Disconnect external devices, including docks, USB accessories, and other peripherals.
- If the battery is removable, follow Lenovo’s instructions for your model. Lenovo’s general no-power guidance includes disconnecting power and peripherals and removing a removable battery where applicable.

Use an emergency-reset hole only when your model guide identifies it
Some Lenovo laptops with an internal battery have an emergency-reset hole. It is a reset control, not a mechanical power switch: it temporarily cuts power so the system can be reset. Lenovo’s general procedure is to disconnect AC, use a straightened paper clip in the identified hole, reconnect AC, and then try to start the computer. Follow the exact model guide for the location and procedure.
Lenovo’s guides document this procedure for specific ThinkPad families, including the ThinkPad P1 Gen 7 and ThinkPad T14s Gen 6 / T14s 2-in-1 Gen 1. Do not assume another Lenovo model has the same feature or layout. Insert a paper clip only into a hole that Lenovo identifies as the emergency-reset hole; an unidentified opening could be something else.

Try the Novo button only on a compatible IdeaPad
Some IdeaPads have a Novo button, sometimes a small button and sometimes a pinhole. Its position varies; it may be on the side or near the power button. On supported models, pressing Novo while the laptop is shut down can open a menu with options such as system recovery, BIOS setup, or boot configuration. This provides access to startup-related tools, but Lenovo does not describe it as a universal way to power on laptops with a defective power button.

If the reset procedure works, Lenovo says the power button may have an issue and directs users to Support. If the laptop remains unresponsive, do not keep trying unidentified pinholes or improvise a hardware workaround. Contact Lenovo Support or a properly identified repair service with the exact model information. Lenovo’s instructions do not support opening the laptop or shorting motherboard pins as routine consumer steps.
