What matters is whether your videos are original and valuable, and whether the channel meets YouTube Partner Program requirements. Choose a specific audience, build a repeatable format that still gives each episode distinct substance, and treat monetization as a review-based goal—not an automatic result of reaching a threshold.
1. Choose an audience and a clear promise
Start by completing this sentence: “This channel helps [a particular viewer] [learn, decide, or enjoy something].” A focused promise makes it easier to choose topics and tell whether each video belongs on the channel. YouTube does not prescribe a winning niche or guarantee that a subject will grow; niche selection is your editorial decision.

Before committing, list several video ideas you can make for the same audience. Consider whether you can keep bringing original research, explanation, demonstration, or storytelling to those ideas. A topic is a stronger fit when you can make useful episodes without relying on interchangeable scripts or other people’s clips as the main attraction.

Being off camera is a presentation choice, not a content strategy. Choose a format that lets viewers get something distinctive from your work. YouTube’s policy says: “Be your original creation. If you borrow content from someone else, you need to change it significantly to make it your own.” Read the YouTube channel monetization policies before building a production workflow around third-party material.

These are possible formats, not YouTube endorsements. For each one, check four things before you commit: how much original insight or demonstration it allows, whether you have the rights to the footage, music, images, and scripts, how repeatable it is without making episodes interchangeable, and whether it suits your intended viewers in long-form, Shorts, or both.
3. Make each upload distinct, even when the format repeats
A recognizable intro, visual style, or episode structure can help viewers know what to expect. The risk is a channel whose episodes differ only in a name, topic label, or small template change while providing little new value. YouTube identifies generic, repetitive, template-driven videos with little value, minimally changed third-party clips, and readings of material the creator did not make as monetization policy risks.

Give every episode its own purpose: a specific question, explanation, demonstration, argument, or story. If you use material made by someone else, permission does not by itself settle whether your video meets YouTube’s separate reused-content monetization requirements. Transform it substantially with commentary or a meaningful educational or entertainment purpose, and make your contribution clear to a viewer.
YouTube says reviewers may consider the channel as a whole, including its theme, most-viewed and newest videos, metadata, and About section. Keep those elements consistent with what your videos actually deliver; do not rely on a disclaimer or one original upload to make an otherwise repetitive channel appear original.

4. Set up the channel and establish a sustainable workflow
- Define the channel promise. Write down the intended viewer, the benefit the channel offers, and the formats you plan to use.
- Plan a small set of distinct episodes. For each idea, identify the question it answers and the original research, explanation, demonstration, or storytelling you will contribute.
- Check rights as you produce. Track the source and permitted use of third-party footage, images, and music. Make your own script and keep your contribution central.
- Publish and review the work. Use YouTube Studio to manage uploads and channel information. The official guidance here does not establish a posting frequency that guarantees views, so choose a schedule you can maintain without reducing each video to a template.
- Keep the channel coherent. Make sure the About section and metadata accurately describe the channel, and check that new uploads continue to serve the stated audience.
No special camera, microphone, lighting kit, or paid editing service is established as necessary to begin. If and when you are eligible to apply to YPP, YouTube says you can apply through YouTube Studio on desktop or a mobile device.
5. Understand YouTube monetization eligibility
The thresholds below are YouTube’s published eligibility requirements as shown on its official pages accessed October 3, 2026. They are not earnings forecasts or guarantees of acceptance. YouTube applies monetization policies to the channel; showing your face is not a substitute for meeting them.

Meeting a threshold is only one part of eligibility. YouTube’s current YPP overview also lists these application prerequisites:
- Follow YouTube channel monetization policies.
- Be in a region where YPP is available.
- Have no active Community Guidelines strikes.
- Turn on 2-Step Verification for the Google Account.
- Have access to advanced features.
- Link or set up an active AdSense for YouTube account.
When eligible, use the Earn area in YouTube Studio to apply. YouTube reviews applications at channel level; it says a decision typically takes about one month, though delays can occur. A threshold alone does not guarantee approval.

6. Know what monetization may include—and what it does not promise
Eligible YPP creators may have access to Watch Page ads, Shorts Feed ads, YouTube Premium revenue, Shopping, memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers, and Super Thanks. Each feature has its own terms, requirements, and country availability, as described on YouTube’s monetization features page. A new channel cannot assume every feature will be available, and views do not translate into a fixed income.
YouTube’s YPP overview, accessed October 3, 2026, announced updated terms that creators should review and accept by January 31, 2027 for continued full monetization when changes begin February 1, 2027. Because platform terms can change, check the live official YPP overview for the current requirements and dates.
