To reveal faint stars in a deep-sky image, calibrate your exposures when suitable calibration frames are available, align the stars, reject poor frames or deviant pixels, and average the remaining images into a stack. Stacking reduces random noise, but the result may still look nearly black until you stretch its linear data. This walkthrough uses Siril as a documented example; the same basic sequence applies in other astrophotography software.

What stacking does—and why it helps

Stacking combines multiple images of the same target after aligning them. Averaging reduces random noise relative to the cluster’s signal, making faint stars easier to distinguish. Siril’s documentation describes the idealized signal-to-noise improvement as proportional to the square root of the number of images, or √N; actual results depend on the data and are not guaranteed to match that relationship exactly. Siril’s stacking documentation explains the method and its options.

Three operations in the workflow solve different problems:

  • Calibration uses appropriate calibration data to correct unwanted sensor patterns.
  • Registration aligns corresponding stars across exposures, and can correct distortion when configured with astrometric information.
  • Stacking combines the aligned frames, often with rejection to exclude unusual pixel values such as transient trails.

Prepare and organize your frames

Separate sessions and frame types

Gather multiple light exposures of the same cluster and keep them organized by capture session. If the camera or setup changed between sessions, calibrate each session with its corresponding calibration frames before registering the resulting preprocessed images together. Siril’s FAQ describes this session-by-session approach.

SVBONY SV105 Telescope Camera, 1.25" IMX307 CMOS Color Eyepiece Camera
  • SV105 telescope camera is the basic method for starting astronomical imaging; you can use the SV105 electronic telescope eyepiece to image it; which is more suitable for beginners who like to do astrophotography
  • SV105 astrophotography camera is suitable for lunar and planetary photography; share the view of bright planets; moon and terrestrial targets; just point the telescope at the moon or planet and record a quick video; you can transfer the real-time view of the telescope to your laptop or PC
  • Plug and play; no driver required; real-time dynamic observation; clear images; SV105 astronomy camera compatible with Windows system needs to download Sharpcap Capture; Linux system needs to download AstroDMx Capture; Android system needs to download USB Camera
  • The image processor adopts dark light compensation technology; SV105 svbony camera can greatly improve the image clarity of the astronomy camera under low light conditions
  • Interesting and useful USB planetary camera; standard 1.25 inches; threaded M28.5x0.6; can be used with telescope filters; directly connected to the telescope

Calibration files and settings depend on how the images were captured, so there is no single recipe that fits every dataset. Siril’s manual pre-processing tutorial demonstrates calibrating lights with darks and flats, with bias information included in its described dark workflow. An uncooled camera can still be used: the FAQ discusses accounting for thermal noise during preprocessing, including dark optimization when darks and lights differ in temperature.

Check for changing gradients

Light pollution or moonlight can make the sky background vary during a long imaging session. If the gradient changes noticeably from frame to frame, removing a simple gradient from individual calibrated exposures may be more effective than trying to correct the changing background only after stacking. Siril’s manual tutorial demonstrates background sampling and subtractive correction.

Register the stars

Register, or align, the calibrated frames so the same stars occupy corresponding positions before combination. Registration is essential when the camera or mount shifted between exposures. Siril’s manual tutorial documents its registration workflow; plate-solving is optional, but can assist stacking. It uses the telescope or lens focal length and imager pixel size, and astrometric information can enable distortion correction. PixInsight’s StarAlignment tutorial also describes registration with arbitrary distortion correction.

If registration detects too few stars

In Siril, low signal-to-noise, bias removed twice, or elongated stars caused by tracking problems can prevent reliable star detection. Check the frames for trailing, confirm calibration was not applied twice, and adjust star-detection settings so enough stars are detected. These causes and checks are listed in the Siril FAQ.

Review frames before stacking

Do not assume every exposure deserves equal influence. Inspect sharpness, star roundness, background, and detected star count; reject obvious outliers such as frames with poor tracking or noticeably soft stars. Siril can weight frames by star count, weighted FWHM, noise, or integration time. The manual tutorial and stacking documentation describe these quality measures and weighting choices.

There is no universal percentage of frames to keep. Make the decision from the quality of this dataset: a marginal frame may add useful signal, while a badly trailed or otherwise poor frame can compromise the result.

Choose a stacking and rejection method

For deep-sky images, averaging with rejection is a useful starting point. Averaging combines pixel values; rejection removes values that depart from the other frames, which can help suppress transient trails and other outliers. The appropriate method depends on stack size, gradients, noise, and the outlier pattern.

Decision What to consider
Small stack Siril describes percentile clipping as suitable for sets of up to six images. This is a software-documentation guideline, not a universal rule for every dataset. Siril stacking documentation
Other stack sizes or data Siril lists percentile clipping, sigma clipping, MAD clipping, median sigma clipping, Winsorized sigma clipping, and additional methods. Choose based on the stack and the unwanted values you need to reject. Siril stacking documentation
Different frame levels Normalization can account for differences in image levels associated with gradients, moonlight, or sensor temperature changes. Siril stacking documentation
Uneven frame quality Use quality measures such as star count, weighted FWHM, noise, or integration time to guide weighting or filtering. Siril stacking documentation

If your software offers rejection maps, inspect them to see which pixels were excluded. That can help distinguish successful trail rejection from a method that is removing useful star data.

Process the stack so faint stars become visible

A clean stack is still a linear image: its pixel values have not yet been remapped to make faint signal visible on screen. Siril’s manual describes the preprocessed result as “a clean, but still linear image.” A dark-looking display at this stage does not by itself mean the data are missing.

  1. Crop irregular borders. Registration can leave uneven edges; crop these before final presentation.
  2. Correct remaining gradients. If background variation remains, sample and subtract it carefully. A changing gradient may be easier to address on individual calibrated frames before stacking.
  3. Calibrate color. Set color balance before judging the cluster’s final appearance.
  4. Stretch the image. Apply a histogram or asinh stretch to map faint signal into a visible range. Siril’s auto-stretch display is not the same as changing the stored pixel values.
  5. Refine selectively. Use deconvolution if appropriate, and adjust green tint or saturation only when the image calls for it. Export after the image looks balanced.

The processing sequence and the distinction between the linear data and its display stretch are covered in Siril’s manual tutorial and FAQ.

When the result still disappoints

The stars look soft or trails remain

Recheck frame selection and registration. Poor tracking can elongate stars, while weak star detection can lead to unreliable alignment. Remove obvious bad frames and review the alignment before trying another stack.

The background is uneven

If gradients vary across the session, try correcting individual calibrated exposures before stacking rather than treating the combined background as if it were uniform.

An automated script gives a poor result

Automation may require parameter changes for a particular dataset. Review warnings and errors, inspect individual frames, and consider per-frame gradient removal or rejecting poor exposures instead of accepting the script output unchanged. Siril’s FAQ discusses these workflow adjustments.

What this workflow cannot determine for every cluster

No one exposure time, total integration time, or cluster-core setting is appropriate for every target, camera, telescope, and sky. The processing workflow can improve the usability of existing frames, but it cannot recover faint stars that were not recorded in them. For a dense cluster, balance revealing faint members against preserving detail in the brighter center by judging the stretched image rather than applying a universal setting.
