You shouldn’t secretly monitor someone’s Android phone. Google Play’s policy requires monitoring apps to disclose what they do and obtain consent, and says they must not present themselves as secret surveillance. If you’re asking because you suspect someone is tracking you, Android offers controls for certain physical Bluetooth trackers and for app permissions—but those checks address different risks.
Why secret monitoring is not an appropriate Android setup
Google Play defines stalkerware as code that collects personal or sensitive data from a device and sends it to another party for monitoring. Its policy says monitoring apps must provide prominent disclosure, obtain consent as required by Google’s User Data policy, and must not present themselves as a spying or secret-surveillance solution. These requirements are Google Play policy; they are not a statement about the laws that apply in every location.

That means there is no responsible set of instructions for hiding a monitoring app, avoiding detection, accessing someone else’s accounts, or tracking them without their knowledge. If monitoring is genuinely needed—for example, to manage a device you’re responsible for—use a transparent, consent-based arrangement and explain what data is collected and who can see it.

If you’re worried someone is tracking you
First distinguish a physical Bluetooth tracker from an app or account accessing phone data. Android’s Unknown tracker alerts apply to certain compatible physical trackers; they do not detect spyware apps or prove that an account is secure.

Check for a compatible physical tracker
Android can alert you when a compatible Bluetooth tracker appears to be moving with you while separated from its owner’s device. You can also run a manual scan to look for trackers currently nearby and separated from their owner. A scan result by itself does not prove the tracker has followed you. Follow Google’s instructions for unknown tracker alerts to review an alert or scan result.
If you feel in danger, move to a safe public place and contact someone you trust or an appropriate local service. Use a device you believe is safe if you need to seek help.

Review app permissions and data practices
Use Android’s privacy settings to review which apps can access sensitive information, including location. You can also check an app’s Data safety section on Google Play for information the developer provides about its data practices. These reviews can help you understand and limit access, but they do not definitively establish whether spyware is present.

Consider whether the Android system has been modified
Google warns that modified or rooted Android versions may miss automatic security updates and may allow unapproved apps broader access to device data. That is a security concern, not proof that a particular phone is infected. Google’s guidance on modified Android versions explains the risks.
