A data-breach notice means some of your information may have been exposed; it does not prove that anyone has used it. Check what the notice says was exposed, treat unexpected links and requests for account details as suspicious, and use official recovery steps to secure accounts and investigate warning signs.
How to tell whether a breach follow-up message is phishing
Scammers may use news of a breach to make an unexpected email or text seem urgent and believable. A familiar company name or logo is not proof that a message is genuine. Be especially cautious if it asks you to click a link, open an attachment, update payment details, or provide account information.

- Do not use the message’s link, attachment, phone number, or reply address to investigate the request.
- Open the company’s website using a saved bookmark or an address you already know is correct, or call a number from a trusted source.
- If a person contacts you unexpectedly, verify the request through a separate, previously known channel.
- If the sender is unrelated to an account or person you recognize, report the message and delete it.

What signs can indicate identity theft?
These clues deserve investigation, but no single clue proves identity theft. A breach notice itself means information may be at risk; it does not establish that someone has misused it.

- An IRS notice about a duplicate tax return or income from an employer you do not know.
These are among the warning signs listed by IdentityTheft.gov. Check statements, mail, credit reports, and relevant account activity for specific evidence rather than assuming the breach has already led to fraud.
Signs an email or social account may be taken over
Look for a changed email address or phone number, a password reset you did not request, an unfamiliar login alert, or an inability to sign in. If you still have access, change the password, sign out other devices, turn on two-factor authentication, confirm the recovery information, and check for email forwarding rules you did not create. If you are locked out, follow the provider’s account recovery instructions. The FTC provides steps for recovering a hacked email or social media account.

What to do after receiving a breach notice
- Find out what was exposed. Read the notice for the affected company, data involved, recommended actions, and any services it offers. Then go to IdentityTheft.gov and choose the data-breach path for steps tailored to the information involved. If your Social Security number was exposed, the FTC advises ordering free credit reports and checking for accounts you do not recognize.
- Secure affected and reused logins. Change the password for the affected account and any other account where you reused it. Turn on multi-factor authentication (MFA) where available. A security key is one possible second factor; use another available MFA method if you prefer. You do not need to buy a device to follow these steps. Keep your device and security software updated, and back up important data.
- Respond to evidence of financial fraud. Contact the financial institution or company through a trusted channel. Ask its fraud department to close or freeze affected accounts, and change relevant logins, passwords, and PINs. Follow current official instructions for placing a credit freeze or fraud alert. IdentityTheft.gov says a free one-year fraud alert can be placed through one of the three credit bureaus, and that bureau must notify the other two. A freeze is another protective option described in the FTC’s data-breach guidance.
- Use breach-related services offered by the affected company. The FTC advises taking advantage if that company offers free credit monitoring or identity theft insurance. This guidance does not mean you need to buy an unrelated paid service.
- Report suspected fraud and phishing. Report identity theft at IdentityTheft.gov to get a personalized recovery plan. Send phishing emails to [email protected], forward phishing texts to SPAM (7726), and report scams at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Keep relevant notices and account details available when following the provider’s recovery instructions.
