A Bitcoin prediction screenshot is a claim, not proof. To assess one, trace its earliest available source, verify the account and links independently, look for earlier copies of the image, and check dated price claims against historical market data. If the evidence does not establish where the post came from, describe it as unverified—not fake.
Start by preserving the claim and its context
Before investigating, record the post URL, account handle, visible publication date and time, stated price target and forecast horizon, currency or trading pair, and any exchange or chart settings shown. Keep a copy if useful, but remember that a downloaded or reposted image may lack meaningful metadata. A polished design or platform badge is not proof of account ownership or authenticity.

Make a note of what the screenshot actually shows and what it leaves out. A crop can hide the original caption, a later edit, the chart’s time scale, or the venue. Those details can determine whether a price comparison is fair.

Search the wording and claimed source
Search a distinctive phrase from the caption, then look for the earliest available version of the post or image. If it carries a watermark or names an analyst, exchange, or public figure, find that source independently and check whether it published the same material. An image’s claimed source is not verified simply because the image says so.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Use reverse image search as a clue, not a verdict
A reverse image search can reveal that a screenshot appeared earlier with a different caption or date. Compare the versions and their surrounding posts. But the earliest copy indexed by a search service is not necessarily the original, and no results do not prove that an image is new or genuine. The House of Commons Library’s image and video verification guidance puts the general principle plainly: “Stopping and asking a few questions about images and videos shared online can help assess whether they are likely to be real, fake, or misleading.”
Do not rely on image metadata
Metadata is not an authenticity stamp. Social platforms often strip it, and users can edit it. Missing or apparently plausible metadata cannot, on its own, authenticate who made an image or when it was created.

Verify the account and any links separately
Compare the handle with the person or organization’s account found through an independent route. Look at older posts and linked destinations for consistency with the claim; a familiar profile picture or a small handle difference can still be used in impersonation. Do not open a link just because it appears in a screenshot, post, or direct message. Navigate to the organization’s official address independently, and confirm unusual requests through another communication channel.

The FBI’s cryptocurrency investment fraud guidance warns about social-media investment fraud, impersonation domains, and suspicious investment apps. Bitcoin.org also describes impersonating accounts and recommends checking unusual communications through another channel in its Avoid Scams guidance. These warnings support careful verification; they do not provide a universal test that proves an account is authentic.

Check past price claims against independent market data
Separate a claim about what happened in the past from a forecast about what may happen next. For a historical claim, write down the exact publication date, forecast horizon, target, currency or pair, and exchange or venue if stated. Then obtain historical prices independently and compare like with like.
- Check the same trading pair and, where possible, the same venue. Bitcoin prices can differ across venues.
- Match the date, time zone, and time interval. A daily candle or a different time zone may show a different high or low.
- Note the chart scale and whether the post is showing a price level, a candle close, or an intraday move.
- Record the original publication date and check for edits or missing context before treating the result as a successful prediction.
If the screenshot omits the venue, pair, time zone, chart scale, or original publication date, say which part cannot be checked from the image alone. A chart mismatch is a reason to investigate, not conclusive evidence of tampering: settings and market sources may differ. One publisher’s description of checking signal histories against exchange candles illustrates why independent data is useful, but it does not make any one exchange a universal reference or prove that a forecast is reliable.

Do not judge a forecaster from a single prediction that appears to have matched a price. Look for the full available record, including misses and edits, and consider whether the examples could have been selected after the event. Cointelegraph reported a viral 4chan-style Bitcoin prediction image whose apparent history had been questioned; that coverage is an example of why claimed dates and provenance need checking, not proof of who created or edited the image.

Recognize pressure tactics and protect your money
Bitcoin.org cautions readers not to trust people who claim to know what Bitcoin’s price will be: “Do not trust people who entice you or others to invest because they claim that they know what the bitcoin price is going to be.” Its Avoid Scams guidance explains that prediction claims may be used to promote pump-and-dump or other investment schemes.

Treat guaranteed or implausibly high returns, urgency, unsolicited contact, requests to move into private messaging, and demands for deposits as warning signs. The CFTC’s advisory on AI trading-bot scams recommends researching the trader or company and the trading website; it also recommends reverse image search for purported personnel in that advisory. These checks do not certify an offer as safe. Do not send money or personal information based on a screenshot.
State what the evidence supports—and what it does not
Different checks support different conclusions. An earlier image with a different caption can show that the image was reused or presented in a changed context; it does not necessarily identify its creator. An account that has not been independently verified remains unverified. A price and date that cannot be corroborated from the screenshot are not proof of forgery. A genuine post can also be cropped or stripped of context.
Use precise language: “I found an earlier version with a different caption,” “I could not independently verify the claimed account,” or “I could not corroborate the stated price and date.” Avoid calling a post fake unless you have evidence that establishes that conclusion.
