Do not assume a grocery app price is the price on the shelf. First confirm the selected store, sales channel, exact item and offer conditions; then compare the shelf label with the scanned price before paying. If they differ, ask staff to verify the price and keep your receipt.
Check the comparison before calling it a mismatch
Prices can differ by store, channel, item size, offer, or timing. Compare the same thing on both sides of the transaction:

| Unit | Whether the amount is per item, per pound, or another unit. For weighed goods, compare the unit price and final weight, not just an estimated total. |
| Offer | Regular price, sale, loyalty price, activated digital coupon, bundle, or minimum-purchase deal. Check whether membership or activation is required and whether the offer applies in store. |
| Timing | Whether the app listing, shelf tag, and register price were current at the same time. |
How to check the price in the store
- Select the location. In the retailer app, verify that the chosen store is the exact branch you are visiting. A price shown for another branch, pickup, or delivery may not apply to the shelf. Target, for example, requires its app to show the current store location for an app-based price match.
- Open the exact listing. Match the item’s brand, variety, size, weight, and package count. Check whether the displayed amount is a fixed item price or a price per unit of weight.
- Read the offer details. Look for membership requirements, digital coupons that must be selected or activated, minimum quantities, and channel restrictions. Compare the regular price separately from any conditional discount.
- Identify who sets the app price. If you are using a delivery marketplace, check its pricing disclosure for that retailer. Instacart says retailers set marketplace item prices; some use everyday store prices, while others charge differently, and some in-store promotions may not apply. The retailer’s pricing policy is shown beneath its name or logo in the app.
- Compare the shelf tag and register. Check the shelf label for the matching item and offer, then watch the price as the item is scanned. For produce or other weighed goods, the final total can change with the actual weight.
- Keep evidence for follow-up. Note the branch and time, and keep the receipt. If useful and permitted, take a photo of the shelf label and retain the current app listing. Follow that retailer’s proof rules: Target says shoppers can show the current price on their mobile device for verification in its price-match process, but it does not accept screenshots or pictures for that process.
What to do if checkout is higher
Point out the difference before paying, while staff can check the item, shelf label, selected store, and offer. Ask them to verify the current price and explain the store’s correction policy. If you notice the issue after paying, take the receipt and relevant details to customer service or a manager and ask what adjustment is available.

The Federal Trade Commission’s 1998 scanner-pricing report advises consumers to watch prices as they are rung up, raise an error promptly, ask about the store’s policy, and check the receipt afterward. For recurring problems, it suggests contacting store management or the appropriate state or local consumer-protection or weights-and-measures office. The report is longstanding guidance, not a guarantee of a particular remedy: correction rights and procedures depend on the jurisdiction.

Why an app price may differ from the shelf
- Different location or channel: A retailer may vary prices or promotions by store and online. Target states that its pricing, promotions, styles, and availability may vary by store and online.
- Marketplace pricing: A third-party delivery app may use a retailer-set marketplace price rather than its in-store price, and some in-store sales may not carry over. The Federal Trade Commission’s 2026 notice on online food delivery says grocery items on delivery platforms can be on average 10% higher than in-store prices before platform fees. That figure is attributed to media reports cited in the notice; it is not an FTC experiment or a prediction for a particular store, product, or order.
- Conditional discount: A loyalty price or coupon may require membership, activation, a qualifying quantity, or an in-store purchase. Retailers may also restrict combining a coupon with a price match.
- Weight or timing: A weighed item’s estimate can change with the final weight, and app, shelf, and register prices can update at different times.
Retailer policies are not universal
There is no general rule that every grocery app price must match its shelf price. Retailers set their own price-match terms, and a price match is different from a guarantee that an app listing and shelf tag are identical.
