A crypto presale is not safe just because its website looks polished or its white paper sounds convincing. Before sending funds, independently verify who is behind the offer, what the token actually gives you, and how the money will be used. Never share your seed phrase or private key, and do not sign a wallet request you cannot explain: some signatures can authorize token spending later without moving funds immediately.
How to tell whether a crypto presale is legitimate
No checklist can prove that a presale is legitimate or guarantee that you can recover your money. Treat the offer as unverified until you have checked its claims through sources independent of the project’s own website and promotional channels.

Verify the project and its promoters
Find the project’s official website and communications independently rather than trusting an unsolicited message, advertisement, or search result. Check that links and account names match across sources you have verified. Identify the people and entities associated with the offer, then independently check their identities and claims. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) advises investigating individuals and entities affiliated with a digital-token offering.

Read what the token actually promises
Look for a plain explanation of the token’s rights and intended use, as well as how sale proceeds will be spent. Ask whether the token represents a claim, access to a service, governance rights, or something else—and whether those rights are clearly stated. Legal treatment depends on the facts and jurisdiction; U.S. investor-education material is not a universal legal determination.

A polished site or white paper is not proof of legitimacy. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s Investor.gov warns that it is relatively easy to create an impressive-looking ICO that may still be a scam.
Reject guaranteed-return claims
A promised guaranteed investment return is a serious warning sign. The CFTC puts it plainly: “There is no such thing as a guaranteed investment or trading strategy.” Verify any performance or business claims independently, and do not treat confident language as evidence.

Presale scam red flags
- Pressure to act quickly: A countdown, unsolicited offer, or demand to send funds before you can verify the project is a reason to pause.
- Unclear people, entities, or use of funds: If you cannot establish who is raising money, what it will be used for, or what the token entitles you to, do not rely on promotional claims.
- Guaranteed returns: No investment or trading strategy can guarantee a return, according to the CFTC.
- Requests for secret credentials: A legitimate-looking site, message, or support agent does not need your seed phrase, wallet passphrase, or private key to help you participate.
- Wallet requests you cannot interpret: A request to connect is not the same as a request to sign. Stop if the wallet asks you to approve spending or sign a message you do not understand.
- Recovery offers that charge upfront: Someone claiming they can retrieve stolen cryptocurrency in exchange for a fee may be targeting you again.
How a presale interaction can put your wallet at risk
A malicious link can lead to a phishing site that tries to steal credentials or persuade you to approve a wallet action. Connecting a wallet does not by itself explain what a later signature will do, so read each prompt rather than approving reflexively.
Signatures and token approvals
Some token permissions allow a smart contract to spend tokens on your behalf. A permit signature may be an off-chain message that authorizes a later transaction; because no funds move at the moment you sign, it can be easy to mistake it for a harmless login. The Singapore Police Force explains these wallet risks. Ethereum.org also recommends careful wallet security practices in its security guidance.

Before signing, check what asset or permission is involved, which contract or recipient is named, and whether the action makes sense for what you intended to do. If the wallet or signing device does not show enough detail for you to understand the request, do not approve it.
Protect your wallet before you engage
- Verify the official route. Navigate to the project’s website or channel using independently confirmed information; do not follow an unsolicited link or rely on a paid promotion as proof of authenticity.
- Research the offer. Check the people and entities involved, the stated use of proceeds, the token’s rights, and any return claims. Leave if material details are missing or cannot be independently checked.
- Keep wallet secrets private. Never enter or disclose your seed phrase, passphrase, or private key in response to a site, message, or supposed support agent. Anyone who obtains the seed phrase may be able to control the wallet.
- Inspect every wallet prompt. Distinguish a connection from a signature or spending approval. Do not sign a request you cannot explain, even if it appears while visiting the expected site.
- Review permissions after a suspicious interaction. Use a trusted wallet interface or a permission checker reached through a verified source to inspect token approvals. Etherscan and Revoke.cash are examples named in official guidance; verify you have reached the genuine service before connecting or signing.
Would a hardware wallet protect you?
A hardware wallet can reduce some exposure to online attacks by keeping key operations on a physical device, but it cannot make a malicious signature safe. You still have to verify addresses, understand approvals, and judge whether a presale is trustworthy. The Singapore Police Force also cautions that some hardware wallets may display limited transaction detail, which makes careful review of each signing request important.

What to do after signing a suspicious transaction
Act promptly, but do not rush into a second transaction suggested by the suspected scammer or a stranger offering recovery. If you only connected a wallet, inspect its activity and permissions; if you signed something, check both transaction history and token approvals. Revoke permissions you do not recognize using a trusted wallet interface or permission checker reached through a verified source.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Stop interacting with the suspected scam. Do not click more links, sign more requests, or continue a conversation with the suspected scammer.
- Check the wallet. Review recent activity and token approvals through a trusted wallet interface or blockchain explorer. Revoke unauthorized approvals if possible.
- If your seed phrase was exposed, move remaining assets. Create a new wallet with a seed phrase that has never been exposed and transfer remaining assets to it promptly. Do not reuse the compromised phrase.
- Secure related accounts. Change reused passwords and secure accounts associated with the wallet or exchange, using independently verified official channels.
- Contact the provider and report the incident. Reach your crypto provider through its verified official channel and report the incident to the relevant local authority. The European Banking Authority’s crypto-fraud factsheet advises prompt action; the UK National Crime Agency’s Operation ATLANTIC guidance also addresses reporting and recovery scams.
Completed blockchain transfers are often not reversible. A provider may have options if the wallet or account is on its platform, but recovery is not assured. Do not pay an unsolicited recovery service or stranger a fee to retrieve cryptocurrency.
