There is no reliable checklist that can prove a crypto presale or new token is safe. You can, however, catch warning signs and check key claims before connecting a wallet or sending funds. Stop when the team, token rights, contract, or sales claims cannot be independently verified—and never share your recovery phrase.
How do I know if a crypto presale is a scam?
Look for claims and conduct that make it harder to verify the offer or easier to pressure you into acting. A warning sign is a reason to pause and investigate, not by itself proof that a particular project is committing a crime.

- Guaranteed profits or “no risk.” Promises that a token will certainly rise, unusually high returns, or impossible-to-lose claims are classic warning signs. The SEC’s deliberately fake HoweyCoins example parodies guaranteed returns and a promised pre-ICO pump. The CFTC states: “There is no such thing as a guaranteed investment or trading strategy.”
- Urgency and social pressure. Countdown clocks, supposedly scarce allocations, demands to invest more after a small first payment, influencer excitement, or group-chat endorsements can leave little time for independent checks. ESMA’s January 2026 crypto fraud factsheet describes social promotion, quick-profit promises, and pressure to add funds in rug-pull and pump-and-dump patterns. The SEC also warns about misleading social-media solicitations and timing claims in investment scams.
- Unverified people, partners, or approvals. A polished site, official-looking badge, or claim of SEC registration does not establish that a person, company, exchange relationship, license, or endorsement is genuine. Investor.gov warns that platforms can appear to be SEC-registered marketplaces when they are not.
- Vague token rights or a project built on future promises. If the offer does not explain what the token gives a holder, how supply is allocated, who controls important decisions, or what makes the token useful beyond resale, there is little concrete information to assess. Calling it a “utility token” does not establish its value, legitimacy, or legal treatment.
- Technical assurances that cannot be checked. “Audited” and “liquidity locked” are claims to verify, not safety certifications. An audit may cover a particular contract version and scope; a lock arrangement has its own terms and limits. Neither proves that operators are honest or will behave safely in the future.
- Requests for wallet secrets or unclear transactions. A promoter or unsolicited support contact should never ask for your seed phrase, recovery phrase, private key, password, or authentication code. A request to enter a recovery phrase on a presale site is a stop sign.
The FTC reported in 2022 that nearly half of people who said they lost cryptocurrency to a scam since 2021 said it started with an ad, post, or message on a social-media platform. That figure describes reported scam victims in the FTC report; it is not the share of social-media users who are scammed or a current rate for presales. Read the FTC report.

Some common labels describe different ways a pitch or project can go wrong. The labels help explain a pattern; they do not, by themselves, establish intent or prove fraud in an individual case.

- Genuine Check: confirm your signer is authentic during setup with the Ledger Wallet app.
- Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.
- Pump-and-dump: Promoters build hype or demand, then sell into the buying interest; the price may fall sharply afterward. The SEC illustrates this pattern in its HoweyCoins teaching example.
- Rug pull: Operators abandon a promoted project or remove value, leaving buyers with losses. ESMA’s January 2026 factsheet describes scenarios in which a promoted token becomes worthless while contacts disappear or the project shuts down.
- Fake or misleading offering: A site may fabricate performance, claim nonexistent registration, or make unsupported assertions about its team, exchange, or token. Check each assertion with the named independent source rather than trusting the site making the claim.
- Credential phishing: An imitation site or impostor tries to obtain wallet secrets or persuade you to approve an action that gives away access. Keep recovery phrases, private keys, passwords, and authentication codes to yourself.
What should I check before buying a new crypto token?
Use this sequence to slow the decision down. It is a risk-reduction process, not a scorecard: a project can pass visible checks and still fail, change its code or terms, or conceal misconduct.
- Stop before connecting or paying. Treat a countdown or direct message as a reason to slow down. Find the project’s official domain independently instead of following a promoter’s link. Crypto transfers are difficult to reverse.
- Verify identities and claims at their source. Search for team members and legal entities independently. Check claimed licenses, partnerships, exchange listings, and regulator approvals in the partner’s or regulator’s own records. Search regulator investor alerts and enforcement notices for relevant names and domains. The SEC’s pre-IPO investment scam alert explains why an apparent official endorsement or registration claim should not be accepted at face value.
- Read the offering’s token terms. Identify the rights and uses the token has now, its stated future purpose, supply and allocations, vesting, and who controls material decisions. Compare the marketing claims with the offering’s primary materials and note what they leave unspecified. The CFTC advises buyers to understand token rights and factors that may affect value in its digital coins and tokens advisory.
- Check audit and liquidity claims against the underlying evidence. Find the original audit report and check the auditor, contract address and version reviewed, scope, date, and unresolved findings. For a claimed liquidity lock, examine the arrangement and its terms rather than relying on a screenshot or marketing statement. A SEC press release about SafeMoon recounts complaint allegations that defendants said funds were safely locked while crypto assets were withdrawn; those are allegations in an enforcement action, not a general finding about every audit or lock. Read the SEC announcement.
- Protect your wallet and understand any requested action. Never disclose or type a recovery phrase into a website reached through a pitch. Read the destination, amount, and requested wallet approval before signing. If you cannot interpret a transaction or approval, do not sign it. Ethereum.org’s security guidance explains common wallet and scam risks.
- Walk away at the hard stop. Do not proceed if material claims cannot be independently verified, token rights remain unclear, or the seller demands secrecy, urgency, or credentials. Do not send more money to unlock a withdrawal or recover an earlier payment; demands for advance fees are a known fraud pattern.
When comparing projects, organize what you can inspect: corroborated team history; present rights and working product versus future promises; contract address, version, audit scope, and unresolved findings; supply concentration, allocations, and vesting; liquidity control and withdrawal conditions; and whether deadlines, partnerships, listings, and endorsements are confirmed by their named primary sources. These comparisons can expose unanswered questions, not certify safety.

Can an audit or locked liquidity prove a coin is safe?
No. An audit is evidence about what the report actually reviewed, not a guarantee about the people running a project, unreviewed code, later changes, or future conduct. A liquidity lock is likewise limited by the arrangement’s terms and who controls what is outside it. Match the claim to the original evidence and its scope; an audit badge or lock screenshot is not enough.

No. Never share or enter a seed phrase or recovery phrase, private key, password, or authentication code at a presale site or with a promoter or unsolicited support contact. A legitimate need to inspect a token or complete a transaction does not make it safe to hand over wallet credentials. If a site asks for a recovery phrase, leave it without entering anything.

What can checks establish—and what can’t they?
Independent checks can reveal contradictions, unverifiable claims, unclear rights, or unsafe wallet requests. They cannot prove an investment is safe. A token’s legal treatment depends on the actual facts and jurisdiction; the label “utility,” claims of decentralization, an audit, or an exchange listing do not settle the question. The SEC’s guidance explains that a crypto asset described as a non-security can be part of an investment contract when issuer representations or promises of managerial efforts and the other elements of the Howey test are met. See the SEC’s crypto-asset transactions guidance. The guidance here draws mainly on U.S. regulator materials and an ESMA factsheet dated January 2026; laws and remedies differ by location.
