If someone unexpectedly calls or texts claiming to be from your bank, don’t share a verification code, click a link, or move money at their direction. Hang up or stop responding, then check the claim using your bank’s official app, a website address you already know, or the phone number on your card or statement. Caller ID and a familiar-sounding message are not proof of identity.
How banking scams on your phone work
A scammer may pose as a bank employee and claim there is a suspicious transaction, a locked account, or another urgent problem. They may try to get your login details or a one-time code, send you to a fake sign-in page, or persuade you to transfer money. If they gain account access, they may change credentials and move funds quickly. The FBI describes these tactics in its November 25, 2025 public service announcement.

The contact may arrive as a phone call, text, email, or link to a fraudulent website. The displayed caller ID, sender information, and details the person knows about you can all seem convincing, but none independently verifies that the contact is from your bank. The CFPB explains that caller ID, texts, and emails can be faked in its guidance on avoiding scams.

Warning signs to recognize
- Unexpected urgency: The caller or message says your money is at risk, a transaction is fraudulent, or your account will be locked unless you act immediately.
- A request for a code or password: Never give an incoming caller or texter a one-time verification code, password, or other account credential. The FTC says a bank will not ask for your verification code in a call about fraud; see its bank-fraud call alert.
- Instructions to move money: A supposed bank employee tells you to withdraw cash or transfer it to a “safe” account to protect it. The FTC’s advice is direct: “Never move or transfer your money to ‘protect it.’” A scam-induced transfer may be difficult to recover, and reimbursement is not guaranteed.
- A link, callback number, app, or remote-access request: They tell you to click a text link, call a number in the message, install software, or let them control your phone or computer. These steps can expose credentials or give a scammer access.
- Pressure to keep the contact secret: A person discourages you from checking independently or talking to someone you trust. That is a warning sign, not a reason to stay on the line.
What to do when a suspicious call or text arrives
- Do not act on the incoming contact. Don’t share codes, passwords, or account details; click a link; transfer or withdraw money; install software; or grant remote access.
- If it is a call, end it. You can note the claimed bank name and basic reason for the call, but don’t use a callback number the caller gives you. Don’t treat caller ID as proof.
- Verify through a channel you choose yourself. Open your bank’s official app, type a web address you already know, or call the number on the back of your card or a recent statement. Avoid relying on a top search result for contact details. The FTC recommends independently contacting the bank in its guidance on calls claiming your money is at risk.
- If it is a text, don’t reply or follow its link. Check for a real account issue using one of the trusted routes above. The CFPB gives similar advice for messages asking customers to verify account information in its bank and credit union message guidance.
Which bank contact route should you use?
Choose a route you can reach independently—not one supplied in the suspicious call or message. These options work because you initiate the contact through a known channel:

- Your bank’s official app: Open the app already installed on your device, rather than an app or link offered by the caller.
- A website address you already know: Type it yourself instead of following a text or email link.
- The number on your card or statement: Call that number and explain what the caller or message claimed.
Bank-specific fraud lines, account freezes, recovery procedures, and payment protections vary by institution and transaction type. Ask your bank what steps apply to your account; don’t assume a transfer can be reversed or reimbursed.
If you shared information or sent money
- Contact your bank immediately through a trusted channel. Explain exactly what you shared or transferred, when it happened, and any steps the scammer asked you to take. Ask the bank to secure the account and address unauthorized transactions. For a fraudulent wire transfer, the FBI recommends requesting a recall or reversal as soon as possible.
- Change exposed credentials. Reset any password you disclosed, and change it anywhere else you reused it. Use unique passwords for important accounts; the FBI recommends unique passwords and a password manager as an optional way to maintain them.
- Watch for unauthorized activity. Review your accounts for withdrawals, transfers, and purchases you don’t recognize, and report suspicious activity to the bank promptly.
- Keep evidence of the contact. Save messages and note the phone numbers, names, websites, and any software the scammer asked you to use. Don’t delete information that may help your bank or investigators.
Do not wait to finish every other step before calling the bank. A bank’s response and the possibility of recovering money depend on the institution and transaction, so act quickly without assuming a particular outcome.

How to report a banking scam
- FTC: Report the scam at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. The FTC also recommends reporting scams involving money transfers.
- FBI IC3: Report account takeover or fraudulent wire activity at ic3.gov.
- CFPB and local authorities: The CFPB says consumers can also consider contacting their state attorney general and local police. See its fraud and scam guidance.
- Text-message reporting: Use your phone’s junk-reporting option or forward the message to 7726 (SPAM), where supported. The FTC explains text reporting in its unexpected-text alert.
In a November 25, 2025 public service announcement, the FBI said IC3 had received more than 5,100 complaints and losses exceeding $262 million since January 2025 related to account-takeover fraud. That is a dated count of complaints received by IC3, not a complete count or estimate of all banking scams.
