The reliable approach is to combine several weak signals with a claim-by-claim citation audit, the article’s revision history, and independent checks of the sources. AI detectors can add context, but a score is neither authorship evidence nor proof of a policy violation.
This guide shows how to decide which passages and references deserve closer checking, how to document what you find, and how to report uncertainty without accusing an editor on the basis of style or software output.

What you can—and cannot—establish
“AI-generated” can describe several different situations: a model may have drafted a paragraph, rewritten a human draft, suggested an outline, translated text, or supplied a citation that an editor later checked. A polished current revision does not reveal which of those, if any, happened. Human editors also produce repetitive, formal, or overly smooth prose, while AI-assisted text can be heavily revised until obvious patterns disappear.
For that reason, treat authorship as a hypothesis, not a conclusion. Your strongest evidence normally concerns the content itself: a source that does not exist, bibliographic details that do not match, or a citation that fails to support the adjacent sentence. Stylistic clues can tell you where to look; they cannot identify an author.

Prose signals that justify a closer look
Wikipedia’s overview of AI in Wikimedia projects reports several warning signs. They are observations to combine, not a diagnostic checklist. One isolated phrase is weak evidence; a cluster of unusual features alongside citation problems is more useful.
Chatbot-style framing
Some generated drafts address a user instead of writing an encyclopedia article. Examples reported in the overview include openings such as “Here is your Wikipedia article on” and statements like “Up to my last training update.” A sentence that talks about fulfilling a request, choosing a format, or ending a conversation is out of place in an article’s encyclopedic prose.
Check the surrounding revision rather than deleting the sentence immediately. An editor may have pasted a draft into a sandbox, copied an instruction accidentally, or left a quoted statement that is not the article’s own voice.

Repeated transitions such as “moreover,” “in conclusion,” or “it is important to note” can make a paragraph sound templated. The same applies to a sequence of identically shaped paragraphs, predictable headings, and conclusions that restate every preceding point. These habits also occur in student essays, press releases, and hurried human edits, so they are useful only as prompts for closer reading.
Unusually polished but generic prose
Generated text often sounds fluent while avoiding the specific details that make a reliable reference work useful. Watch for broad claims about importance, impact, or popularity that contain no names, dates, measurements, or attributable sources. Compare the sentence with the cited material: a smooth summary may conceal an unsupported inference.

Promotional or breathless language
Words such as “breathtaking,” “groundbreaking,” or “world-class” can be inappropriate in a neutral article unless they are clearly attributed to a source. Promotional adjectives are not exclusive to AI; they may come from a public-relations release or an enthusiastic editor. Ask whether the wording states a verifiable fact or merely evaluates the subject.
Formatting quirks
The overview lists excessive em dashes and curly quotation marks among possible clues. Other oddities include inconsistent quotation styles within one revision, unexplained changes in capitalization, headings that do not match Wikipedia’s normal structure, and markdown-like formatting in places where the project uses wiki markup. Formatting can change when text is copied between editors, so inspect the revision that introduced it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhy style cannot settle authorship
Editors can deliberately write in a formal, repetitive style, and a model’s output can be edited to remove recognizable patterns. Conversely, a human may paste boilerplate that resembles a model response. Use language patterns to prioritize passages for verification, never as a standalone accusation.
Audit every citation at the claim level
A reference is not trustworthy merely because it has a working link or a plausible-looking title. Check four separate questions for each citation attached to a questionable passage.
| Check | What to verify | What a failure means |
|---|---|---|
| Does the work exist? | Find the publication in the original publisher, journal, book catalog, archive, or another independent record. | A missing record may indicate a fabricated citation, but a dead link alone is not proof. The material may have moved or become paywalled. |
| Do the details match? | Compare author names, exact title, date, journal or publisher, volume, issue, pages, DOI, ISBN, and edition. | A real work with altered details can mislead readers and make the cited evidence impossible to locate. |
| Does it support the adjacent claim? | Read the relevant passage in the original. Check names, dates, quotations, quantities, and causal statements one by one. | A citation can be genuine yet unrelated, too weak for the wording, or represented in the opposite sense. |
| Is there independent confirmation? | For consequential claims, compare a second reliable source or an independent catalog record. | Independent confirmation reduces the chance that one erroneous source or one misread passage controls the article. |
Step 1: isolate the exact claim
Copy the sentence or clause under review, including its qualifiers. Separate multiple assertions: “The law passed in 2019, reduced emissions by 20%, and caused the company’s closure” contains at least three claims. A single citation may support one while failing to support the others.

Step 2: identify every attached reference
Wikipedia citations may appear after a sentence, at the end of a paragraph, or in a grouped note. Open each one. Record the bibliographic information as it appears in the article before deciding whether it is accurate.

Step 3: locate the original or a reliable copy
Search the exact title and author. For scholarly work, add the DOI; for books, search the ISBN and publisher catalog; for reports, search the issuing organization and publication date. An independent library or publisher record is useful when a link in the article is broken.
Step 4: compare the evidence with the wording
Read beyond the abstract or search-result snippet. Check whether the source actually discusses the same person, place, period, sample, and definition. Pay particular attention to negative findings, uncertainty, and conditional language that may have been omitted from the Wikipedia sentence.
Step 5: document the result
Keep a short audit trail: the article revision, exact sentence, citation identifier, record you found, relevant page or section, and the conclusion. Mark each detail as directly supported, partially supported, contradicted, or not verified. This makes a later discussion factual instead of personal.
Use revision history before drawing conclusions
A current article snapshot cannot show who introduced a passage or how it changed. Open the page’s history, select the revision that added the wording, and compare the diff with the previous version. Look for a sudden block of prose, a batch of references added together, or later edits that corrected obvious errors.

History can establish when text and citations appeared; it does not by itself establish that a contributor used AI. Do not infer intent from an editor’s username, edit summary, time of day, or editing speed. If a passage has been rewritten several times, inspect the earliest version that contains the disputed claim and the sources available at that point.
Why AI detectors are weak evidence
Detector systems estimate whether text resembles examples in their training data. They do not observe how a Wikipedia edit was produced. The AI-detection overview summarizes studies reporting both false positives (human writing labeled as AI) and false negatives (generated writing labeled as human), with accuracy declining after paraphrasing or substantial editing.
One historical evaluation from 2023 tested 14 detection tools: all scored below 80% accuracy, and only five exceeded 70%. That result, reported in an encyclopedia overview, is not a current scorecard for every product or language. Detector performance can vary with text length, genre, language variety, and whether the passage has been translated or revised.
How to interpret a detector result
- Low score: It does not prove human authorship. Generated text may have been edited, translated, or fall outside the tool’s training examples.
- High score: It does not prove AI authorship. Formal, non-native, heavily edited, or formulaic human writing can trigger a false positive.
- Different tools disagree: Treat the disagreement as a reason to rely on source and history checks, not as a tie-breaker.
- Short passages: Results are especially unstable when the sample contains little text or many quotations, lists, or technical terms.
Never present a detector percentage as proof that a specific Wikipedia contributor used AI. If you mention a result in a discussion, identify the tool and date, preserve the exact text tested, and state that the output is inconclusive.
What prevalence figures do—and do not—tell you
An October 2024 study by Princeton University, as reported in Wikipedia’s overview, estimated that about 5% of 3,000 newly created English Wikipedia articles in the August 2024 sample — Princeton University, 2024. That is a bounded estimate for one sampled month and a particular set of English articles. It is not today’s prevalence, a rate for all Wikimedia projects, or evidence about any individual page.
Best Value
Do not turn a sample estimate into a statement that “5% of Wikipedia is AI-written.” The population, language, creation window, and study method all matter, and the estimate concerns AI assistance rather than a definitive finding of wholly machine-written text.
English Wikipedia policy: scope and dates matter
According to the overview of AI in Wikimedia projects, English Wikipedia introduced a speedy-deletion process for suspected LLM-generated articles in August 2025. The same overview says that in March 2026 English Wikipedia prohibited LLMs from generating or rewriting article content, while retaining exceptions for copyediting one’s own writing and machine translation from another language’s Wikipedia.
These dates describe English Wikipedia’s rules, not a universal Wikimedia policy. Policies can change, and enforcement depends on the current wording and local processes. Check the live English Wikipedia policy page before citing a rule in a deletion discussion or making a report. A suspected AI origin is not, by itself, a substitute for showing that the page meets the applicable deletion or content standards.

- Capture the passage. Save the exact wording, section heading, citation numbers, and page revision. Include enough context to preserve qualifiers such as “may,” “estimated,” or “according to.”
- List the signals. Note chatbot framing, repetitive transitions, generic claims, promotional language, or formatting anomalies. Keep these notes separate from factual findings so a stylistic impression does not masquerade as proof.
- Audit each reference. Verify existence, bibliographic details, and direct support. Search an exact title, author, DOI, ISBN, or publication record when necessary.
- Check the claim against the source. Mark every name, date, quotation, quantity, and causal statement as supported, partly supported, contradicted, or unverified.
- Inspect the diff. Find the revision that introduced the passage and see whether later editors corrected or challenged it. Do not infer authorship from account behavior.
- Seek corroboration. For important claims, locate an independent reliable source. Distinguish a second source that repeats the same error from one that independently documents the fact.
- Use detectors only as context. If you run one, record the tool, date, text sample, and result, then explicitly label it inconclusive. Never let it replace the citation audit.
- Write a proportionate conclusion. Report the evidence you checked and its limits. Separate “the citation could not be verified” from “the passage may be AI-assisted”; they are different findings.
How to classify what you find
| Finding | Defensible wording | What not to claim |
|---|---|---|
| The publication record is missing after reasonable searches. | “I could not verify this reference in the publisher, catalog, or independent records I checked.” | “The citation is definitely fabricated.” |
| The work exists but does not contain the stated fact. | “The source is real, but the cited passage does not support this sentence.” | “The editor invented the entire article.” |
| Several stylistic clues occur, with no citation error found. | “The wording has features sometimes associated with generated text; authorship remains unestablished.” | “This proves AI wrote it.” |
| A detector gives a high probability. | “One detector flagged the sample; detector outputs are not proof and should be checked against sources and history.” | “The contributor used AI.” |
| A policy concern is established. | “This edit appears inconsistent with the current English Wikipedia policy, subject to the policy’s scope and exceptions.” | “All Wikimedia projects ban this conduct.” |
Common mistakes that weaken a review
- Relying on one tell. A phrase such as “moreover,” curly quotation marks, or an em dash is not an authorship test.
- Checking only whether a link opens. A live link can lead to an unrelated document, and a dead link can point to a legitimate work that moved.
- Reading only a title or abstract. The decisive qualification may appear in the methods, results, footnotes, or a later correction.
- Ignoring revisions. A current paragraph may be the result of several human edits and no longer resemble the original draft.
- Confusing bad writing with AI writing. Errors, awkward phrasing, or excessive polish identify a quality problem at most, not its author.
- Overstating prevalence. A sample from August 2024 cannot describe every article created before or after that month.
- Publishing an accusation before checking. Give editors a specific sentence, citation, and reproducible verification result so the discussion can focus on correction.
What a careful report looks like
A useful report is concrete and limited: identify the exact revision, quote or reproduce the disputed claim, list the references checked, explain what each source does or does not establish, and note any independent records consulted. If the evidence is mixed, say so. “Possibly AI-assisted” describes an unresolved hypothesis; “citation could not be verified” describes a source-checking result. Neither statement claims certainty about a person.
The goal is a more reliable article, not a forensic label. Correct unsupported claims, replace misrepresented references, and ask for clarification through Wikipedia’s normal discussion and review processes. When the evidence remains uncertain after those checks, preserve the uncertainty rather than converting a suspicion into an accusation.
