A map pin is a lead, not a guarantee. Check the address, opening hours, and whether the business accepts Lightning payments, on-chain Bitcoin, or both. Have a compatible wallet ready before you arrive.
Why finding a Bitcoin-accepting business takes two checks
Bitcoin directories are useful because they collect scattered merchant information in one place. They are not, however, a live authorization system for every checkout terminal. A business can change owners, stop accepting Bitcoin, move locations, change payment processors, or accept only one type of Bitcoin payment while its old listing remains online.

The practical rule is simple: use a directory to discover a candidate, then use the business’s own contact channel to confirm that the candidate is still real and suitable for your purchase. BTC Accepted explicitly warns that its information may not be current and that map locations can be approximate. Treat the same limitation as applying to any crowdsourced directory unless the merchant has confirmed otherwise.

Before leaving home, establish five facts:
- The venue is a physical location you can actually visit.
- The address and contact details match the business’s own current information.
- It is open when you plan to arrive.
- It accepts Bitcoin directly, rather than merely selling a gift card or accepting cryptocurrency online.
- Your wallet supports the payment rail the cashier uses: Lightning, on-chain Bitcoin, or either.
Start with BTC Map
BTC Map is usually the most useful first search for a local venue. It uses OpenStreetMap tags to identify places that accept Bitcoin and displays those merchants in its apps. The underlying data and the apps are free and open source.
#1 Best Overall
- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Search by city, postal code, neighborhood, or a visible map area. Zoom in until individual pins are separated, then open several nearby entries rather than choosing the first result. Read the category, name, address, notes, and any indication of the payment method. A restaurant, shop, hotel, market, or service provider may have very different checkout procedures even if both appear as Bitcoin merchants.
Step-by-step search
- Open BTC Map on a phone or computer.
- Enter your city or move the map to the neighborhood you will visit.
- Zoom in and open each plausible pin. Record the exact street address, business name, category, and any payment-method note.
- Check whether the pin represents a customer-facing venue. Some map entries can describe an office, event location, market stall, or a business that primarily operates online.
- Open the business’s official website or social profile from an independently verified search, not only from a directory description. Compare the address and phone number.
- Contact the business and ask the confirmation questions in the next section.
BTC Map’s own description is clear about what it does: “We use OpenStreetMap to tag places that accept bitcoin and we display those merchants in our beautiful apps.” That explains why the map is an excellent discovery layer and why the quality of an individual entry depends on the underlying map data and later verification.
Confirm the business before making a special trip
Use the phone number, contact form, or other details published by the business itself. A short call is often more reliable than an old directory note. If the business has several branches, ask about the exact branch you plan to visit; payment policies can differ by location.

A concise confirmation script
You can ask: “Do you currently accept Bitcoin in person at this location? Do you take Lightning, on-chain Bitcoin, or both? Is there a minimum purchase, and should I tell the cashier before ordering?” If you are paying for a particular item or service, name it. A merchant might accept Bitcoin for retail purchases but not for deposits, subscriptions, regulated products, or third-party services.
What to record
- The date and time of the confirmation.
- The branch address and the name or role of the person who answered, if offered.
- Whether the payment is direct to the business or handled by a payment processor.
- Whether the cashier expects a Lightning invoice, a standard Bitcoin address, or either option.
- Any checkout instructions, minimums, identification requirements, or refund restrictions the business mentions.
Do not assume that a “Bitcoin accepted” logo means every wallet will work. The merchant may have switched from on-chain payments to Lightning, or may support only one of them. If the employee is unsure, ask for the current procedure or request that a manager confirm it before you travel.

Understand the payment method: Lightning versus on-chain Bitcoin
“Bitcoin accepted” can refer to two different payment rails. Ask which one the venue supports before you arrive.
| Payment rail | What you normally receive | What to verify before visiting |
|---|---|---|
| Lightning | A Lightning invoice, often presented as a QR code or payment link. | That your wallet can send Lightning payments and that the merchant’s invoice has not expired before you pay. |
| On-chain Bitcoin | A standard Bitcoin address or on-chain payment QR code. | That the merchant accepts on-chain transactions and what it considers sufficient confirmation for the purchase. |
| Both | The cashier or terminal offers a choice. | Which option is preferred for the transaction and whether the price or settlement policy differs. |
Bitcoin.org explains the in-person flow this way: “Look for a Bitcoin or Lightning payment option when paying: you scan a QR code or open a payment link with your wallet, and the store gets paid.” The site also notes that many in-person Bitcoin payments use Lightning. That makes wallet compatibility a practical requirement, not a technical detail to resolve at the counter.
A directory entry that says only “Bitcoin” does not establish which rail is available. Make the Lightning-versus-on-chain question part of your confirmation call.
Use other directories when BTC Map has few results
No single directory is a complete census of Bitcoin-accepting businesses. If BTC Map shows no useful nearby venue, check another source, then apply the same direct-confirmation process.
| Directory | What it can add | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Coinmap | Venue data displayed from OpenStreetMap tags. | Useful as a second map view; coverage and freshness depend on its dataset and the underlying map tags. |
| BitPay directory | Categories covering online and in-person spending. | Filter carefully for a physical venue near you; an online merchant is not evidence of local, face-to-face acceptance. |
| BTC Accepted | Additional merchant listings and map locations. | Its warning says information may be out of date and many pins are approximate, so verify the business directly. |
| Bitcoin Map | A separate directory view of listed businesses. | Its displayed coverage is its own dataset and should not be treated as a global total. |
When comparing results, prioritize a nearby physical address, a current contact method, an explicit payment rail, and evidence of recent verification. A second directory is valuable when it supplies a phone number or a different lead; it is not valuable merely because it repeats the same unverified pin.

How to judge whether a listing is trustworthy
Distance is only the first filter. A venue two kilometers away with a confirmed Lightning checkout is more useful than a closer pin with no address and no working contact details.
Strong signals
- The venue’s official site lists Bitcoin or Lightning among current payment options.
- The address, phone number, and opening hours agree across the business site and the directory.
- A recent verification date or note identifies who checked the listing.
- The business answers your payment-method question clearly.
- The listing identifies a named branch rather than a city-wide brand entry.
Weak signals
- A logo or “crypto friendly” label without checkout instructions.
- A map pin placed near a street or neighborhood instead of at a precise address.
- An old social-media post announcing acceptance with no current payment information.
- A listing that points to an online store when you need an in-person purchase.
- A business employee who says acceptance ended, is temporarily unavailable, or depends on a manager who is not present.
If two sources disagree, do not average them. Contact the business and use its current answer. If no one can confirm acceptance, remove the venue from your practical shortlist.
What directory totals do—and do not—tell you
Directory dashboards measure the records in that directory, not every business in the world that might accept Bitcoin. The figures below were displayed in 2026 and have different definitions and scope.
| Source and snapshot | Displayed figure | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| BTC Map dashboard, 2026 snapshot | 27,259 merchants | The number of merchant records in BTC Map’s dataset; it is not an independently audited global count. |
| BTC Map dashboard, 2026 snapshot | 15,105 recently verified within one year | Records whose OpenStreetMap survey:date, check_date, or check_date:currency:XBT tag was less than one year old. |
| Bitcoin Map, 2026 displayed figures | 152 businesses in 36 countries and 134 cities | The coverage shown by that directory, not a worldwide census and not directly comparable with BTC Map’s merchant total. |
“Recently verified” is a useful freshness signal, but it still does not promise that a cashier will accept your transaction today. Verification dates describe map data; the business’s current policy decides whether your purchase succeeds.
Prepare your wallet before you leave
Install or open a wallet that supports the payment method the merchant confirmed. If the venue accepts Lightning only, an on-chain-only wallet will not complete the payment. If it accepts on-chain Bitcoin only, a Lightning balance alone may not help. Check the wallet’s send screen and network support at home, while you still have time to resolve a compatibility problem.

Lightning checkout
The cashier or terminal normally presents a Lightning invoice as a QR code or link. Open the wallet’s Lightning send function, scan or open the invoice, check the amount and merchant description, and approve. Wait for the wallet and the cashier’s system to show success before leaving. If the invoice expires or the amount changes, ask the cashier to generate a new one instead of trying to reuse the old code.
On-chain checkout
The merchant may display a Bitcoin address or QR code. Use the wallet’s on-chain send function, verify the destination and amount, and ask what the business considers payment received. Some merchants may require a transaction to be seen on the network or to reach a specified confirmation state before releasing goods. Do not assume that broadcasting a transaction automatically satisfies that policy.
When the screen and cashier disagree
- Stop before approving if the wallet shows a different amount or destination.
- Ask the cashier to cancel and regenerate the invoice or QR code.
- Do not pay a second time until the first attempt’s status is clear.
- Keep the wallet’s transaction ID or payment receipt if the merchant needs to investigate.
Troubleshoot common failures without paying twice
The QR code will not scan
Ask the cashier to increase the screen brightness or display a fresh code. You can also use the wallet’s option to paste or open a payment link if the merchant provides one. Never type a long address from memory.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe wallet says the invoice is invalid or expired
Request a new invoice. Lightning invoices are created for a particular payment and can become unusable; an old screenshot is not a substitute for the current checkout code.

The merchant accepts only a rail you cannot use
Do not improvise by sending through a different network. Ask whether the business can offer its other supported method, or use another payment method and record the venue as unsuitable for this wallet.
The business says it stopped accepting Bitcoin
Do not rely on the pin because it appears in multiple directories. Save the current information only if you intend to report an update through the directory’s normal process, and find another venue.
The payment appears complete but the cashier cannot see it
Show the wallet’s payment status or transaction identifier and ask the merchant to check its processor or wallet. Avoid sending again until both sides know whether the first payment settled, failed, or is still pending under the merchant’s policy.

Bitcoin.org identifies supported gift cards as a possible alternative for some purchases. A gift card purchase is not the same as the local merchant accepting Bitcoin directly: you are buying an intermediary product, and the card may be restricted by country, currency, retailer, or delivery method.
Check the gift card’s region, expiration or redemption rules, denomination, and whether it can be used at the particular branch or online account you need. Availability changes, so confirm the offer at the time of purchase. If your goal is to pay a nearby business in person, ask whether the card must be shown digitally, printed, or redeemed online before you travel.
A practical decision process for your next outing
- Discover: Search BTC Map around your destination and open several nearby pins.
- Cross-check: Compare the address and contact details with the business’s own current information; use Coinmap, BTC Accepted, BitPay’s directory, or Bitcoin Map only as additional leads.
- Confirm: Ask the exact branch whether it currently accepts Bitcoin in person and whether it supports Lightning, on-chain Bitcoin, or both.
- Prepare: Use a wallet compatible with that rail and verify that scanning QR codes or opening payment links works.
- Pay: At the counter, use the newly generated invoice or QR code, check the amount and destination, and wait for the merchant’s success indication.
- Recover: If anything fails, stop, preserve the payment status or transaction ID, and resolve the first attempt before sending another payment.
This process separates discovery from confirmation and confirmation from payment. It minimizes the two most common avoidable failures: arriving at a business that no longer accepts Bitcoin and arriving with a wallet that cannot use the merchant’s payment rail.
