How to spot AI-generated crypto scams and deepfakes

AI-generated voices, videos, images and text can make crypto fraud look authentic. Here is how to pause, verify identities independently, protect accounts and report a scam without relying on visual clues.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The safest way to spot an AI-assisted crypto scam is not to prove whether a video, voice or image is synthetic. Stop the transaction, break contact with the person who made the request, and verify the identity and claim through a phone number, website or person you locate independently. Do not send cryptocurrency, passwords, verification codes or identification documents while you are being pressured.

Why AI makes crypto fraud harder to judge

Artificial intelligence can help a fraudster create a convincing identity and an entire false investment story. The FBI says criminals use generated text and images for fake profiles, websites and investment promotions. They can also clone a voice or generate video to impersonate a relative, public figure, company executive or government official.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

That matters in cryptocurrency because transfers are often difficult to reverse, and a scammer can combine several channels at once. A polished website may support a persuasive social-media profile; a cloned voice may follow a text message; a fabricated video may appear to endorse a trading opportunity. The technology is an amplifier for impersonation, not a separate category of investment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Synthetic media is not automatically illegal. The criminal conduct is the deception, theft, unauthorized account access or other offense carried out with it. The FBI has also warned that generated material can be difficult to identify reliably, so a “deepfake detector” approach based only on appearance is unsafe.

The main AI-assisted crypto scam patterns

Impersonated identity Typical channel Requested action Independent verification route
Exchange support employee Unsolicited call, text or email about an account problem Click a supplied link, disclose login or identification information, or install software Navigate to the exchange’s official website yourself and use its published support route
Investment promoter, celebrity or executive Social profile, advertisement, fabricated website, synthetic image, voice or video Transfer cryptocurrency or connect a wallet to a purported opportunity Research the claim through an independently found official channel; do not use contact details in the promotion
Relative, friend or public official Phone call, voice message, video call or private message Send cryptocurrency, provide a code or move the conversation to a new platform Contact the known person through a previously confirmed number or account
Law firm, government contact or recovery company Follow-up call or message after an earlier crypto loss Pay an advance fee or provide personal and financial information for “recovery” End the contact and verify any organization through an independently located official source

Fake investment promotions

A fraudster may build a complete fictional opportunity: a profile with generated photos, a site showing invented returns, testimonials, a trading dashboard and a video or voice endorsement. The 2024 American Bar Association Foundation and FBI crypto infographic warns that even apparently real video chats and trading platforms can be fake. A live conversation therefore does not establish that the person, company or balance is genuine.

The pitch may begin with a message about an exclusive opportunity, a celebrity endorsement or a supposed insider strategy. It can then move you to a private chat, where the promoter provides a wallet address or a link to a trading interface. Numbers on the dashboard may rise after each deposit, encouraging you to send more. When you try to withdraw, the operator may demand another payment. A displayed balance is evidence only of what the website claims, not of funds held for you.

Exchange-account impersonation

The message often starts with an alarming claim: a withdrawal is pending, an account will be closed, or suspicious activity has been detected. The caller then supplies a link or asks for a password, one-time code, identity document or remote access. The stated objective is to take over the account and drain it. Treat the alert as unverified until you reach the exchange through a route you found separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Scammers may know your name, the exchange you use or the approximate amount in an account because of an earlier data exposure or information you posted publicly. Those details do not prove that the caller works for the exchange. An authentic-looking caller ID, logo or email signature can be copied. The critical question is whether the alert still appears when you sign in through the exchange’s normal app or address and contact support from there.

Voice and video impersonation

A cloned voice can sound like a family member or executive, while generated video can depict a public figure or law-enforcement official. In a May 15, 2025 advisory, the FBI described an ongoing campaign that used AI-generated voice messages impersonating senior U.S. officials. The apparent speaker’s status is not evidence that the request is authentic.

Impersonation can be staged as a live video call, a voicemail, a short social-media clip or a sequence that begins with text and ends with a call. A scammer might claim that a confidential matter prevents a normal callback, or insist that cryptocurrency is the only acceptable payment. Those constraints are part of the pressure tactic. End the exchange and contact the supposed person or institution through a channel established before the request.

Recovery fraud after an initial loss

People who have already lost cryptocurrency are attractive targets for a second fraud. Someone claiming to be a lawyer, investigator, government contact or recovery service may promise to retrieve the funds, then demand an upfront fee or sensitive information. The FBI has warned that fictitious law firms and similar schemes generated more than $9.9 million in reported losses between February 2023 and February 2024. A guarantee of recovery is a warning sign, not proof of expertise.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A recovery fraudster may know the amount you lost, repeat details from your complaint or send a convincing letter with a case number. Do not assume that knowledge means the contact is official. The FBI’s July 20, 2026 advisory says the Internet Crime Complaint Center does not maintain a social-media presence or recover funds through social platforms. An account offering those services there is fraudulent. Never pay a second party to unlock, trace or release cryptocurrency based only on an unsolicited promise.

How a multi-stage scam can look

These schemes often use several believable moments instead of one obviously fake message. First, a generated profile or advertisement creates familiarity. Next, a private conversation supplies a link to a site that imitates an exchange. A cloned voice or video then reassures you that the promoter is real. Finally, an urgent request asks for a transfer, a wallet connection, a password or a verification code. Each step is intended to make the next request feel routine.

Seeing the same story repeated across a website, email and video does not provide independent confirmation if all of those channels were created by the same operator. Independence means starting from information you already trust: a saved exchange address, a previously confirmed telephone number or a known person’s established account. A second link supplied by the same contact is not a second source.

A verification sequence that works even when media looks real

  1. Stop the transaction. Do not send cryptocurrency, enter credentials, disclose a verification code or install software while a caller or message is urging you to act. The FBI advises against sending assets to people known only online or by phone.
  2. Break the contact chain. End the call or conversation. Do not open a supplied link, scan a supplied QR code or call a number included in the suspicious message. Close the page and start again from a bookmark or a web address you already trust.
  3. Find the official route independently. Type the exchange or organization’s address yourself, use its official app, or locate a telephone number from a statement or previously verified record. Never assume that a search advertisement, social profile or search result is the authentic support channel.
  4. Verify a person on a separate, known channel. If the request appears to come from a friend or relative, call a number already stored in your contacts or speak in person. For an executive, official or public figure, use the organization’s established contact route rather than replying to the account that contacted you.
  5. Verify the request, not just the identity. A real person’s account can be compromised, and a genuine employee will not necessarily make an unusual demand. Ask what the request is for, why it must be done now and whether the organization normally asks for the information or payment. Confirm those points through the independent channel.
  6. Inspect surrounding details. Compare the sender’s address, telephone number, username, domain spelling and payment destination with trusted records. Slightly altered names, extra words, unfamiliar country codes, a new conversation platform or an emotional demand to keep the matter secret are reasons to stop.
  7. Only then decide whether to act. If the identity or request cannot be independently confirmed, refuse the transfer and do not provide information. No convincing image, voice or video should override that rule.

Why visual and audio clues are only clues

The FBI has listed possible irregularities such as distorted facial features, mismatched accessories, odd shadows, unnatural movement, inaccurate watermarks and a voice that does not quite match the supposed speaker. These observations can justify further checking, but they cannot authenticate a person. High-quality generated media may lack obvious artifacts, and ordinary compression, poor lighting or a weak connection can create similar defects.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not rely on eye direction, hands, lip synchronization, a blinking pattern or a single frame as a pass-or-fail test. The FBI says AI-generated content has become difficult to identify. The reliable test is whether the person and the specific request withstand independent verification.

  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by

No physical product, hardware wallet, security key or detection app is established by these advisories as a dependable way to identify a deepfake. Security tools can help protect an account, but they do not prove that a caller is who they claim to be. Treat media analysis as one possible warning signal, never as permission to send funds.

Red flags by the way the scam reaches you

An exchange alert

  • The contact is unsolicited and claims that immediate action is required to prevent closure or a loss.
  • The message directs you to a login page, asks for a one-time code or requests an identity document through an unfamiliar channel.
  • The sender insists that you remain on the call while you transfer funds or install a tool.
  • The supplied domain differs from the exchange’s known address by a letter, added word or unusual ending.

Use the exchange’s normal sign-in process and support page instead. If there is a genuine account problem, it should still be visible when you access the service independently.

An investment pitch

  • The promotion promises unusually certain or rapid returns and uses a famous person, executive or supposed expert to create trust.
  • A profile, website or dashboard has little verifiable history, while testimonials and performance screenshots are the main evidence.
  • You are told to send cryptocurrency directly, connect a wallet, or pay a fee before withdrawing profits.
  • The promoter discourages questions, insists on secrecy or says the opportunity will disappear unless you act immediately.

Do not treat a celebrity-looking video, a live chat or a trading interface as proof that the opportunity exists. Stop before transferring anything and verify the company and offer through sources you found without using the promotion’s links.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A friend or official in distress

  • The request uses an urgent emergency, secrecy or an unusual payment method.
  • The account has recently changed names, numbers or platforms.
  • The person refuses a normal callback or says that only cryptocurrency will work.
  • The request asks for a verification code, password, identity document or access to your device.

Use a previously confirmed channel and ask a question that an impostor would not know. Do not publish the answer in the same conversation or reveal a code sent to your phone.

A recovery offer

  • The caller learned about your loss from a public post or an earlier scam.
  • The service demands an advance payment, wallet access, identity documents or remote control of your device.
  • The representative claims a guaranteed result or says that only a private social-media contact can help.

End the contact. The FBI’s July 20, 2026 advisory says the Internet Crime Complaint Center does not maintain a social-media presence or recover funds through social platforms; an account offering those services should be treated as fraudulent.

If you clicked, disclosed information or sent cryptocurrency

Secure accounts and devices

  1. Stop communicating with the suspected fraudster and do not send a second payment to “unlock” or “verify” the first one.
  2. From a clean device, change the affected password and any other account that reused it. Turn on multifactor authentication and revoke unfamiliar sessions, API keys and connected applications.
  3. Contact the exchange or wallet provider through its independently located official support route. Ask what account-freezing, withdrawal-review or transaction-monitoring steps are available.
  4. If you installed software or granted remote access, disconnect the device from the network and have it checked by a qualified technician. Change credentials only after the device is considered safe.

Preserve evidence

Save the sender’s usernames, telephone numbers, email addresses, domain names, message headers, screenshots, call times, website addresses, payment instructions, transaction hashes and cryptocurrency wallet addresses. Keep the original files where possible rather than only a cropped screenshot. Record the date, what was promised and what information or funds were provided.

Report promptly

Report suspected internet fraud to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) and use the FTC’s consumer reporting route at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Include contact information, the interaction history, payment data and cryptocurrency addresses when available. Also notify the exchange, bank or payment service involved. Reporting cannot guarantee recovery, but detailed records can help identify linked activity and protect other victims.

What the published loss figures do—and do not—show

The FBI reported more than $9.9 million in losses from cryptocurrency scam victims who were further exploited by fictitious law firms between February 2023 and February 2024. That figure covers the specified recovery-scam pattern; it is not a total for all cryptocurrency fraud or all AI-enabled crime.

In an April 2025 consumer alert about 2024, the FTC said consumers reported losing nearly $3 billion to impersonators. That broader figure includes impersonation losses generally, not only cryptocurrency cases and not only scams using artificial intelligence. Treat both numbers as reported-loss measurements with defined scopes, not as a measure of every incident.

Questions to ask before any transfer

Who initiated the contact, and did I already know how to reach that person or organization? Can I independently confirm the domain, phone number, account and payment destination? Is the request asking me to bypass a normal process, keep a secret, move to a new platform or act before I can check? Would I make the same decision if the photograph, voice and video were removed? If the answer is uncertain, the correct next step is no transfer.

A short pause checklist

  • Am I being rushed, frightened or told to keep this secret?
  • Did I receive a link, number or payment address that I have not independently verified?
  • Can I contact the supposed person or organization through a channel I already trust?
  • Is the request asking for cryptocurrency, a password, a verification code, an identity document or device access?
  • Would I still act if the voice, photograph or video were removed?

If any answer raises doubt, stop. The FBI’s December 3, 2024 advisory states: “Do not send money, gift cards, cryptocurrency, or other assets to people you do not know or have met only online or over the phone.” Independent verification is more dependable than trying to win a visual contest with a deepfake.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I identify a deepfake by looking at the eyes, hands or mouth?

Those details may contain irregularities, but they are not a reliable pass-or-fail test. The FBI says synthetic content can be difficult to identify, and normal compression or poor lighting can create similar artifacts. Verify the person and request through an independent channel instead.

Does a live video call prove that an investment or exchange representative is real?

No. The 2024 American Bar Association Foundation and FBI crypto infographic warns that apparently real video chats and trading platforms can be fake. A live call should never replace independent verification.

What should I do if an exchange caller asks for my login or verification code?

End the call, do not use its link or number, and open the exchange’s official app or website yourself. Contact support through the published route and ask whether an account problem exists.

Is cryptocurrency payment a normal way for a government official or recovery service to collect a fee?

An unsolicited demand for cryptocurrency, especially with urgency or secrecy, is a major warning sign. Verify the organization through contact information you locate independently. The FBI says IC3 does not recover funds through social-media accounts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a hardware wallet or deepfake-detection app confirm that a caller is genuine?

No product is established by the cited FBI advisories as a dependable identity test for synthetic media. Account-security tools may reduce risk, but identity and payment requests still require independent verification.

What if I already paid a recovery company?

Stop further payments and communication, preserve messages, wallet addresses and transaction records, notify the exchange or payment service, and report the matter to IC3 and ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Do not trust another unsolicited promise to recover the money.

What details should I include in an internet-fraud report?

Provide contact information, the interaction history, dates, payment data, website addresses and cryptocurrency addresses or transaction details when available. Preserve original messages and files rather than only cropped screenshots.

The Bottom Line

Pause, break contact and verify independently. A convincing AI-generated voice, image or video is not proof of identity, and an unsolicited recovery promise can be a second scam. Do not send cryptocurrency, credentials or personal information until the person, organization and specific request are confirmed through a channel you found yourself.
