It installs apps in isolated containers, provisions reverse-proxy routes and TLS certificates, applies many updates, and schedules per-app backups from one dashboard. You still operate the VPS, DNS zone, credentials, storage, firewall and restore process, so Cloudron reduces routine application administration rather than eliminating server ownership.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
The reliable setup is: start with a fresh supported x64 Ubuntu server, install Cloudron, connect a domain, delegate DNS, deploy applications from the App Store, and send encrypted backups to storage outside the VPS. The documented minimum of 2GB RAM and 20GB disk is enough to install the platform, not a realistic capacity plan for several busy applications.

What Cloudron does on your Ubuntu VPS
Cloudron is a self-hosted control plane for installing, managing and securing web applications on a server. It runs each application in Docker-based isolation, gives applications individual CPU and memory controls, and places them behind a platform-managed reverse proxy. The dashboard handles common lifecycle work—installation, domain routing, certificates, updates, backup jobs and restores—without requiring you to build a separate Nginx, Docker Compose and certificate-renewal stack for every app.
The boundary is important: Cloudron manages the application platform, while you remain responsible for the underlying VPS and everything around it. You choose the provider and size, secure SSH, maintain DNS ownership, pay for disks and outbound traffic, monitor capacity, protect administrator credentials, and verify that a backup can actually be restored.

Choose a supported VPS before installing
Provision a new server rather than installing on a machine that already hosts unrelated workloads. Cloudron’s current installation guidance lists Ubuntu Resolute 26.04 x64, at least 2GB of RAM, at least 20GB of disk, and unrestricted inbound HTTP and HTTPS on ports 80 and 443. The guidance also says that ARM, LXC, Docker and OpenVZ environments are unsupported. Release names and minimums can change, so check the live installation page immediately before deploying.
| Requirement | What to provision or verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Fresh Ubuntu Resolute 26.04, x64 | Cloudron’s tested installation target; do not reuse an already customized host. |
| Virtualization | Full VPS virtualization; not ARM, LXC, Docker or OpenVZ | The installer and managed firewall expect a supported kernel and virtualization model. |
| Memory | 2GB minimum for installation | This is an install floor, not a promise that multiple production apps will run comfortably. |
| Disk | 20GB minimum for installation | Operating-system files, Docker images, logs, updates, app data and backups need additional headroom. |
| Network | Ports 80 and 443 reachable from the internet | HTTP validation, HTTPS traffic and Cloudron’s reverse proxy depend on these ports. |
| Identity and DNS | A domain you control and access to its DNS provider | The dashboard and each app normally use separate hostnames. |
Use the VPS provider firewall as an outer perimeter, then allow Cloudron to manage its own iptables and ip6tables rules. Do not install a second panel or arbitrary daemons on the same host: Cloudron’s network guidance treats additional packages and unrelated services as unsupported unless a current procedure explicitly allows them.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Install Cloudron step by step
- Prepare the server. Log in as root, or use an account with equivalent privileges, on the fresh supported Ubuntu VPS. Confirm that the provider has assigned a public IPv4 address (and IPv6 if you intend to use it), that the hostname resolves locally as expected, and that inbound TCP ports 80 and 443 are not blocked by a provider firewall.
- Download the installer. Run the documented commands exactly as shown:
wget https://cloudron.io/cloudron-setup chmod +x cloudron-setup ./cloudron-setupThe script installs the platform and its dependencies. Avoid simultaneously running package-management jobs or making manual changes to Docker, Nginx or the firewall while it is working.
- Open the first-run interface. When the installer reports completion, browse to
https://<IP>. The first connection uses a self-signed certificate, so your browser will display a warning. Accept it temporarily to reach setup; the warning is expected before a domain certificate is issued. - Set the domain and administrator. Enter the base domain you will use for Cloudron and create a strong administrator account. The normal dashboard is placed at
my.example.com; applications can then use names such asgit.example.comandchat.example.com. - Connect DNS. Select your DNS provider from the providers Cloudron supports, or choose wildcard/manual DNS configuration. Preserve existing records for mail, verification services and other sites. Change only the records required for the Cloudron domain, and lower DNS TTLs in advance if you are migrating a live hostname.
- Finish hardening. Disable password-only SSH in favor of keys where practical, restrict SSH to known source addresses at the provider firewall, keep recovery access documented, and confirm that Cloudron’s own firewall remains enabled. Never overwrite its managed rules with a generic firewall script.
After DNS has propagated, revisit the dashboard on its hostname rather than the IP address. Cloudron can then request and renew a trusted certificate for the dashboard and for application hostnames through its reverse proxy.
Point a domain to Cloudron without breaking existing DNS
You need a deliberate DNS design before publishing the first app. A common arrangement is a dedicated subdomain such as cloud.example.com for the Cloudron dashboard and a wildcard such as *.example.com for applications. Some providers can create the records automatically through their API. With manual DNS, create the exact A (and, if used, AAAA) records that point to the VPS address and follow Cloudron’s instructions for wildcard handling.

- Keep the domain’s registrar and DNS account protected with multifactor authentication.
- Do not delete MX, SPF, DKIM, DMARC, ACME-verification or existing website records simply because Cloudron is being added.
- Check both public DNS resolution and the VPS provider’s reverse-DNS setting before troubleshooting certificates.
- Wait for TTLs to expire after changes; a browser using an old resolver can make a correct configuration look broken.
Cloudron’s proxy terminates HTTPS and routes requests to the selected app. You normally should not edit /etc/nginx; it is platform-managed, and manual changes can be replaced or prevent updates.
Install applications and understand the trust model
Open the dashboard’s App Store, select an application, choose its hostname and storage options, and start the installation. The package supplies the container image, configuration integration and update metadata that Cloudron expects. Once DNS points at the server, the new app is published through the same proxy and certificate automation as the dashboard.
Cloudron also supports three other custom-app categories:
| Category | What it does | Operational consequence |
|---|---|---|
| App Store | Cloudron-maintained application packages | Default path for predictable updates, backups and integration. |
| Community app | Add a package through a developer-supplied CloudronVersions.json URL |
Community apps are not reviewed by Cloudron. Install only from developers you trust and check maintenance history before exposing data. |
| External link | Publishes a link to a service that is not running on this VPS | Cloudron does not manage the linked service’s software, storage or backups. |
| App proxy | Puts an externally hosted HTTP(S) service behind a Cloudron endpoint | Cloudron can provide DNS, certificates, aliases, redirects, CSP controls and availability notifications, but the external app remains outside Cloudron’s update and backup control. |
For a first deployment, prefer App Store packages with an active maintainer. Treat a community package as third-party software: review its source and release cadence, limit its permissions, and keep an independent export of important data.

Plan RAM, disk and app growth realistically
The installation minimums leave little room for production workloads. Cloudron documents that Docker images consume around 10GB in aggregate and that an individual app image is typically around 2GB, with wide variation by application. It also creates a dynamically resized /apps.swap file capped at 4GB. Swap can absorb a short memory spike; it is not a substitute for adequate RAM or fast storage.
| Workload pattern | Planning implications |
|---|---|
| One light, low-traffic app | A VPS near the minimum may work after measuring actual memory and disk use, but leave room for updates and backups. |
| Several ordinary apps | Choose more than the 2GB floor, budget roughly 2GB per app image as an initial image allowance, and monitor resident memory, CPU and storage. |
| Media, files or databases | Prioritize SSD capacity and I/O performance. User data can dwarf image sizes, and backup storage must grow with it. |
| Growth or migration project | Reserve capacity for a second copy during restores and for temporary image layers created during updates. |
Cloudron stores platform data under /home/yellowtent/boxdata and application data under /home/yellowtent/appsdata. Watch free space on the root filesystem, not just the apparent size of a single app. If a data-heavy workload threatens the root volume, take a complete backup first and use Cloudron’s supported volume/data-directory workflow to move high-storage app data to an attached disk. Test the application after the move before deleting the original data.
Configure backups that survive a VPS failure
Cloudron provides per-app backup and restore and can migrate an entire Cloudron between providers. Configure an external, encrypted destination rather than keeping the only copy on the VPS. Cloudron’s official site names Amazon S3, Google Cloud Storage and DigitalOcean Spaces as supported destinations; select one whose region, retention and access controls fit your requirements.
- In the Cloudron dashboard, open the backup settings and add the external object-storage credentials and destination.
- Set a schedule and retention policy appropriate to the data’s recovery-point objective. Keep more than one historical version for applications that can suffer silent corruption.
- Run an on-demand backup of each critical app after initial configuration and after major migrations.
- Perform a restore to a test app or a separate Cloudron on a schedule. Confirm that users can log in, files open, background jobs run and databases contain expected records.
- Document credentials, encryption keys, retention rules and the procedure for rebuilding a replacement VPS.
Know the difference between application data and mounted volumes. An external app data directory is included in app backups. Mounted volumes are not backed up, and a restore does not recreate their contents. For media libraries, file stores and database exports held on mounts, use a separate backup job and record the mount definition alongside the Cloudron backup.

Security responsibilities that remain yours
Cloudron describes its installation as secure by default: application code and the management interface run on your server, apps are isolated with Docker, Ubuntu security updates are enabled, and no required CDN or analytics service sits in front of the installation. Those defaults do not protect a weak administrator password, an exposed SSH account or an untested recovery plan.

Updates, maintenance and day-to-day operation
Use the dashboard as the primary control surface. It centralizes app updates, domains, certificates, logs, resource limits and backup status. Schedule maintenance during a quiet period when an app has a migration or database upgrade, and read the release notes shown for that package before approving it.
Do not treat an apparently green dashboard as proof of recoverability. A successful backup job means data was written to the destination; only a restore test demonstrates that the copy, credentials, encryption keys, mounts and application version work together. Keep a written inventory of every app, hostname, data location, external integration and owner.
Cloudron compared with managing Docker yourself
The choice is primarily about control versus integrated operations. Manual Docker Compose can run almost any image and unrelated service on one host, but you must design the reverse proxy, certificate renewal, update sequencing, isolation, backups and monitoring. Cloudron supplies those workflows for supported packages while imposing a narrower operating model.
Best Value
| Decision axis | Cloudron | Manual Docker Compose |
|---|---|---|
| Supported host | Supported x64 Ubuntu VPS; ARM, LXC, Docker and OpenVZ are excluded by the installation guidance. | Depends on your chosen images, host OS and runtime; you own compatibility testing. |
| Application catalog | Curated App Store plus unreviewed community packages, external links and app proxy. | Any compatible image or compose project, subject to your own review. |
| DNS and TLS | Integrated hostname routing, reverse proxy and certificate automation. | You assemble and maintain DNS, proxy and ACME tooling. |
| Isolation and limits | Docker isolation with per-app CPU and memory controls. | You define container limits, networks and security boundaries. |
| Updates and rollback | Dashboard-driven package lifecycle and backups; behavior depends on each package. | Complete control, but sequencing, migrations and rollback are your responsibility. |
| Backups | Per-app and whole-platform workflows; mounted volumes are excluded and need separate protection. | You choose and script backup scope, encryption, retention and restores. |
| Unrelated services | Additional packages and services on the host are unsupported unless Cloudron documents an integration. | Generally possible, with added conflict and security work. |
| Portability | Whole-Cloudron migration and app restore support can simplify provider changes. | Portability depends on compose files, image availability, secrets and your data-export process. |
| Cost | VPS, domain, external backup storage and any applicable Cloudron subscription. | VPS, domain, storage and your administration time; software may be free but operations are not. |
Cloudron is a strong fit when you want a small team or individual to run several standard web apps with consistent HTTPS, updates and backups. Manual Compose is a better fit when arbitrary host services, custom networking or full control over image and deployment mechanics outweigh the value of an integrated panel.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTroubleshoot the failures you are most likely to see
The installer will not start or stops with a platform error
Recheck that the VPS is a fresh supported x64 Ubuntu installation and is not nested in LXC, OpenVZ or another Docker host. Confirm available disk, memory and outbound internet access. Remove competing Docker or firewall configuration only by rebuilding the server; piecemeal cleanup can leave an unsupported state.
The dashboard is unreachable after installation
Verify the provider firewall and local connectivity to ports 80 and 443, then check that the VPS still has its public IP. If the IP works but the hostname does not, inspect A and AAAA records and DNS propagation. Use the browser’s temporary self-signed-certificate exception only for first-run access; do not suppress certificate warnings permanently.
An app has no certificate or shows the wrong site
Confirm that the app hostname resolves to this VPS, that no stale AAAA record points elsewhere, and that ports 80 and 443 are reachable. Preserve the dashboard hostname and app hostname as separate records. Wait for the DNS TTL to expire before concluding that certificate automation failed.
Backups fail or restores are incomplete
Check destination credentials, object-storage permissions, available local disk and retention settings. Determine whether the missing files were stored on a mounted volume; those contents are outside Cloudron’s app backup and require a separate copy. Repeat the restore with the mount and external data restored first.

The server runs out of memory or disk
Identify which app, logs, images or user-data directory is growing. Stop adding apps until capacity is known, raise the VPS resources, remove obsolete backups according to policy, and move supported high-storage app data to an external disk after taking a complete backup. Do not rely on the 4GB swap cap to sustain a permanently undersized server.
