Before buying a memecoin, check who can withdraw its liquidity, whether any claimed lock can be independently verified, who controls significant token holdings, what the promoters disclose, and whether the pitch relies on urgency or guaranteed gains. If a central claim cannot be checked, pause or walk away. No checklist can make a speculative token safe.
What a memecoin rug pull is—and what it is not
A memecoin rug pull is a form of crypto fraud in which people behind or promoting a token take actions that leave buyers with losses, often by removing liquidity or selling into a market that cannot absorb the supply. The term is widely used in crypto, but the label alone does not establish that a particular project committed fraud. Treat an allegation as an allegation unless a court has made findings.

A token’s price can also fall sharply without a rug pull. Buyers may lose money because enthusiasm fades, a large holder sells, trading is thin, or broader market conditions change. A sudden drop is a reason to investigate, not proof of fraud. Conversely, a token can appear active or hold its price temporarily while a serious risk remains hidden.

Why liquidity control matters
In a decentralized exchange pool, users trade against assets deposited into that pool rather than placing an order with a conventional market maker. In many pool designs, a liquidity provider deposits a pair of assets and receives LP tokens, which represent a claim connected to that liquidity. Depending on the pool and its rules, someone who controls the relevant LP tokens or position may be able to withdraw liquidity. If substantial liquidity disappears, trading can become difficult or the token’s price can move sharply.
That is why “liquidity locked” is not enough as a marketing statement. A buyer needs to know what exactly is locked, who controls it, how the lock works, and when it ends. A public badge or a project post does not answer those questions by itself. There may also be another route to withdraw assets or affect the pool, so a claim about one lock should not be treated as proof that all liquidity is inaccessible to insiders.
What the SEC’s Game Coin case illustrates
In a January 16, 2025 litigation release, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission described allegations involving Game Coin. The SEC alleged that insiders represented that liquidity was locked, while certain LP tokens accrued to an address under a defendant’s exclusive control and remained unlocked. The release said that the LP-token holders could withdraw liquidity without warning or sell substantial assets into the pool. It reported approximately $553,000 in misappropriated crypto assets and an approximately 12% decline in GME’s price as figures in that specific case.

Those are case-specific figures from the SEC’s account of allegations, not typical or predictive outcomes for other tokens. The release said the settlement was subject to court approval; it should not be read as a general finding about memecoins or as a universal technical guide to verifying locks.
A practical pre-purchase check
Use this sequence before connecting a wallet, approving a transaction, or sending funds. It is a due-diligence process, not a certification: passing the checks below cannot establish that a token is safe or that its price will rise.
- Confirm the exact token. Match the blockchain or network and full contract address in the project’s official materials with the address shown by the trading venue or a relevant explorer. Do not identify a token by ticker or name alone; different tokens can use similar names. An address match establishes which token you are examining, not that the token is legitimate.
- Identify the pool you would trade in. Establish which trading pool or venue is relevant to the purchase and which assets are in that pool. A liquidity claim that refers to a different pool, token pair, or network does not establish what is available in the pool you intend to use.
- Test the lock claim. Look for evidence identifying the specific LP tokens or pool positions, their holder, the locking mechanism, and the unlock date. Ask whether an administrator or insider can change or bypass the arrangement, or whether another holder can withdraw liquidity. If you cannot establish who controls the relevant claim and when it becomes available, do not assume the lock protects buyers.
- Research the people and entities. Look for identifiable principals, affiliates, and promoters, and check whether the information is consistent across the project’s own materials and independent records. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) advises checking named affiliates and warns that difficulty finding relevant identities or entities is a red flag. A name or profile is not proof of a person’s role or trustworthiness.
- Read the token terms and funding explanation. Find out what rights, if any, the token gives its holder and how money raised is supposed to be used. The CFTC advises buyers to understand both. If the project gives no clear explanation, or the promotional pitch implies rights that the terms do not establish, pause rather than filling in the gaps with assumptions.
- Examine visible holdings and sell power. Where public information is available, review holder and pool information for signs that a small number of addresses may control substantial amounts. Do not assume an address reveals its owner: pooled, exchange, or other service wallets can complicate interpretation. The authorities cited here establish no numeric concentration threshold, so a percentage alone cannot serve as a safe-or-unsafe rule.
- Verify the pitch independently. Treat claims about celebrities, partnerships, endorsements, or guaranteed returns as claims to check, not evidence. The CFTC cautions against social-media tips and sudden price spikes; the SEC has described memecoin promotion, including presales, followed by promoter selling before the hype ends. If the opportunity depends on acting before you can verify its key claims, do not let urgency substitute for verification.
- Decide before authorizing a transaction. If a critical claim about identity, liquidity control, token rights, or promoter identity remains unverifiable, the sensible action is to pause or walk away. Do not buy merely because you have already spent time researching the project or because a rising price makes delay feel costly.
How to assess a “locked liquidity” claim
Ask a project or promoter for precise, checkable details rather than accepting a label. The evidence should let you identify the pool, the liquidity position or LP tokens covered, the address or entity controlling them, the lock mechanism, and the stated end date. Then check that those details correspond to the token and pool you are considering.

- [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
- What is locked? A statement should specify the particular LP tokens or pool positions and the pool they relate to. “Liquidity is locked” without those details is not independently assessable.
- Who controls it? Determine which address or entity holds the relevant claim and whether a project insider, administrator, or other party can still exercise control. A lock statement about one address does not resolve control of other positions.
- For how long? Find the stated unlock date and consider what happens after it. A lock with a known end date is a time-limited condition, not permanent protection.
- Is there another withdrawal route? Consider whether the statement addresses only a particular position while leaving other liquidity or relevant controls outside its scope. If you cannot verify the scope, treat the claim as unconfirmed.
The SEC’s Game Coin allegations show why a public representation and actual control may differ. They do not provide a single verification method that works for every blockchain, pool design, or lock arrangement. If the project’s claim cannot be checked using reliable, independent information, that uncertainty is itself a reason not to proceed.

Read promotion as a risk signal, not as proof
Memecoin promotion can create a sense that buyers must act immediately. The SEC’s May 29, 2024 Investor Alert describes a pattern in which fraudsters create a memecoin, tout it—including through a presale—and sell before the hype ends. The CFTC separately warns that social-media tips and sudden price spikes are not sound reasons to buy virtual currencies, digital coins, or tokens.
Look for whether the pitch is trying to replace verifiable information with excitement. A celebrity mention, a fast-rising chart, a large online following, or a claim of a coming partnership does not establish who controls the token or the pool. Even genuine attention does not answer whether insiders can sell or withdraw liquidity. The CFTC states: “There is no such thing as a guaranteed investment or trading strategy.”

- Pressure to buy immediately, especially before a stated deadline or “next” price increase.
- Promises of guaranteed gains, quick wealth, or returns with no meaningful risk.
- Advice to buy based mainly on a social-media post, influencer tip, or sudden price spike.
- Partnership, celebrity, or endorsement claims that cannot be confirmed independently.
- Promotion that gives no clear account of token rights, use of funds, or who is responsible for the project.
One warning sign does not by itself prove fraud. Several unverifiable core claims, combined with pressure to act, are a strong reason to stop rather than trying to resolve uncertainty by trusting another promoter.

If you are choosing between tokens, apply the same questions to each one. This makes gaps visible without pretending that a checklist predicts price or certifies safety.
| Question | What to establish | What a gap means |
|---|---|---|
| Who is behind it? | Whether project principals, affiliates, and promoters are identifiable and their stated roles can be checked. | Missing or difficult-to-find identity information is a reason for caution; a public identity alone is not proof of reliability. |
| What does the token provide? | What rights the holder has, if any, and how raised funds are intended to be used. | Unclear terms leave buyers unable to assess what they are actually buying. |
| Who controls liquidity? | Which pool positions or LP tokens are covered by a lock, who controls them, and when they can be withdrawn. | An unverified lock claim should not be counted as protection. |
| How concentrated may sell power be? | What public holder and pool information indicates, while accounting for pooled and service wallets. | Wallet data may not identify beneficial owners, and no regulator-established concentration cutoff is supplied here. |
| What is driving demand? | Whether the case for buying rests on verifiable information or on urgency, social hype, or return guarantees. | Promotion is not independent evidence of token value or project legitimacy. |
There is no supported point total or pass mark for this comparison. Do not turn the answers into a numerical score and call the highest-scoring token safe. If a key answer is unknown, record it as unknown rather than treating silence as a favorable answer.

What common signals cannot prove
Several things that can look reassuring are not proof that a token is safe. A token scanner score, audit, exchange listing, lock badge, prominent promoter, or visible trading activity cannot substitute for separate evidence about who controls assets and what the token’s terms say. The official sources cited here do not endorse a particular scanner or provide a universal method for detecting hidden contract permissions or wallets controlled by the same person.
Nor do these sources establish a safe minimum for pool liquidity, a safe maximum for holder concentration, a minimum token age, a required trading volume, or an acceptable lock duration. A threshold offered by a promoter or an online checklist may be someone’s heuristic, not a regulator-backed boundary. Thin trading and newness can make a token especially risky, but no single age, volume, or liquidity number determines whether a rug pull will occur.
Historical figures about initial coin offerings should not be mistaken for a current memecoin rug-pull rate. The CFTC advisory discusses earlier ICO studies and reports; those figures concern different periods and categories and do not establish the present prevalence of memecoin fraud.
If you suspect a rug pull or have already sent funds
Do not send additional money to unlock, withdraw, or recover funds just because someone says a fee or tax is required. The SEC’s Investor Alert warns that crypto-related scammers may demand further payments to release funds and that recovery offers can themselves be scams. Do not share private keys or wallet recovery phrases with a person or service promising to retrieve assets.
Preserve relevant transaction details and communications for your own records, and use official reporting channels. The CFTC advisory directs suspected victims to its complaint channel. Crypto recovery can be difficult; be especially wary of anyone who guarantees a recovery in exchange for an upfront payment.
