To make room on a PS5 Pro, first check Settings > Storage. Then delete games you can download again, remove optional game content where a game offers Customize, or move less-used PS5 games to USB storage for archiving. If you want extra space where PS5 games remain playable without copying them back, add a compatible M.2 SSD.
The key distinction is that USB extended storage can store PS5 games but cannot run them; an installed, compatible M.2 SSD can store and play them. The storage guidance below is Sony’s general PS5 guidance. Check Sony’s current model-specific instructions for your exact PS5 Pro before buying or installing an SSD.

Start by finding what is using the space
On the console, open Settings > Storage. Sony says the Storage screen tracks space used by games, media, and saved data. Check the categories before deleting anything so you can choose an action that addresses the actual source of the pressure.
For installed games and their add-ons, open Console Storage > Games and Apps. Look through the list for titles you no longer play, or for a game that offers Customize. That option lets you review whether the game has removable portions, such as add-ons you do not use. It is not available for every game, and removing optional content may affect what is available when you next play.

Storage categories are not interchangeable. An installed game occupies space separately from its saved data, and moving or deleting a game installation is not the same as deleting a save. If the space reading points to saved data or media rather than installed games, deleting a game may not solve the particular problem you found.
Use the Storage screen as an inventory, not just a warning. Note which titles are installed, which add-ons are attached to them, and whether a large share of the total is actually media or saved data. This prevents a common mistake: removing a game and discovering that the free-space number barely changed because another category was responsible.
Choose the right way to free space
| Option | Can launch PS5 games directly from it? | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Delete a game and download it again later | No, not until it is installed again | Frees the space occupied by that installation. A purchased game remains in your game library and can be downloaded again. |
| Use Customize for a supported game | Often, if the remaining installed content is sufficient | Can remove selected portions, such as unused add-ons. The option and removable content depend on the game. |
| Move a PS5 game to USB extended storage | No | Keeps the game data on USB as an archive. Copy it back to console storage or M.2 storage before playing. |
| Install a compatible M.2 SSD | Yes | Adds storage for PS5 and PS4 games and media apps, subject to compatibility and installation requirements. |
Sony’s storage guidance establishes these capabilities but does not provide current prices or compare the performance of individual third-party drives. Choose based on whether you need immediate play access, whether copying games back is acceptable, and whether you want to add hardware.
Think of the choices as a speed-versus-cost ladder. Deleting costs nothing but requires a future download. USB storage avoids that download but introduces a copy-back step. An M.2 SSD costs more and takes installation work, yet keeps supported PS5 games in playable storage. There is no official price or typical game-size figure to use for a universal “best” capacity, so base the decision on the titles shown in your own Storage screen.
Delete games you can reinstall when needed
If a game is not currently in your rotation, deleting its installation is the most direct no-hardware option. Find it under Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps, select it, and use the console’s delete option. Menu details can vary with the console’s software version, so follow the labels shown on screen.
- Open Settings > Storage and identify whether games and apps are using the space you want to free.
- Go to Console Storage > Games and Apps, then select a title you are willing to reinstall later.
- If Customize appears, review the available components first. Otherwise, delete the game installation if you no longer need it on the console.
- When you want the game back, download the purchase from your game library, or reinstall it from its source.
Deleting the installation does not revoke a purchase. Sony’s official storage-management guidance says deleted games and applications remain accessible for redownload from the game library. Reinstalling still takes time and requires the game’s installation data to be downloaded or otherwise made available again; deletion is best when you do not need instant access.
Before confirming deletion, check that you are selecting the game rather than saved data. If a title has several add-ons, review the list so you know whether you are removing the base installation, an add-on, or both. The exact labels can differ by software version, but the Storage menu is the place Sony directs owners to manage this content.

Use Customize before removing an entire game
Some games let you remove selected parts rather than the whole installation. If the option appears next to a game, inspect the listed components and remove only what you are comfortable downloading or installing again later. A game may require particular content to launch or to access a mode, so do not assume every component is optional just because it is listed separately.
Customize is particularly useful when a game includes add-ons or portions you no longer use. Removing one component may recover less space than deleting the whole title, but it also leaves the core installation available. If the space pressure is modest, this narrower change can avoid an unnecessary reinstall.
If Customize does not appear, Sony’s guidance does not establish a way to selectively remove data for that title. Use the options the game and console actually present rather than expecting every game to have modular installation controls.

Use USB extended storage as an archive, not a PS5 game drive
USB extended storage is useful when you want to keep PS5 game installations without using the console’s internal storage, but it is not a direct-play location for PS5 games. A PS5 game stored there must be copied back to console storage or an installed M.2 SSD before it can be played. That makes USB a better fit for a backlog or games you want to keep installed but do not need to launch immediately.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallChoose a compatible SuperSpeed USB external drive and set it up as extended storage through the PS5’s storage controls. Setting it up as extended storage is a console operation; do not assume that simply plugging in a drive makes PS5 game data playable from it. Follow the on-screen setup and formatting prompts, and remember that any formatting step can affect existing data on that drive.
PS4 games have a different allowance: Sony says they can be played directly from USB extended storage. So a USB drive can be a practical home for PS4 games you still play, while PS5 games on the same kind of storage remain archived until copied back.
- Connect and set up a compatible USB drive as extended storage using the console’s on-screen storage controls.
- In the Storage controls, select PS5 games you are willing to archive and move them to the USB extended storage device.
- When you want to play an archived PS5 game, copy it back to console storage or M.2 storage and wait for the copy to finish.
- Play PS4 games directly from USB extended storage if they are installed there and the console makes them available.
The trade-off is an extra copy step before a stored PS5 game is playable. Sony’s cited guidance does not establish specific copy times; the time for a particular title depends on the game and the devices involved. Keep enough space in playable storage for games you expect to launch without that step.
USB archiving can be cheaper and simpler than adding an internal drive, but it does not expand the amount of storage from which PS5 games launch. If you routinely switch among several PS5 titles, repeated copy operations may outweigh the hardware cost of an M.2 SSD. If you only revisit a title occasionally, the archive approach avoids buying an SSD while preserving the installed files.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Add an M.2 SSD to keep PS5 games playable
An M.2 SSD is the expansion route for a larger active library: Sony says compatible M.2 storage can hold, download, and play PS5 and PS4 games, as well as media apps. It requires choosing a drive that meets the full specification, fitting an effective cooling structure, installing it in the console, and formatting it when prompted. Do not buy based on capacity or a speed label alone.
The expansion is additional storage, not a replacement for checking the console’s own free-space display. After installation, use the Storage controls to see the usable capacity and choose where supported games and apps are installed or moved. The amount available for games will be lower than the drive’s advertised capacity because the console uses some space for its own system management.
Check every compatibility requirement
| Requirement | Sony’s stated guidance |
|---|---|
| Interface | PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe SSD, M.2 Key M. M.2 SATA SSDs are not supported. |
| Capacity | 250 GB to 8 TB. |
| Supported form factors | 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280, or 22110. |
| Width | Up to 25 mm, including the cooling structure. |
| Length | 30, 42, 60, 80, or 110 mm, corresponding to the supported form factor. |
| Thickness | Up to 11.25 mm total, subject to Sony’s separate board-relative limits above and below the SSD. |
| Sequential read speed | 5,500 MB/s or faster is recommended, not guaranteed as a minimum that ensures a particular result. |
| Cooling | An effective heat-dissipation structure is required, such as a heatsink and heat-transfer sheet. |
Sony supports both single-sided and double-sided drives, but says a single-sided cooling structure is easier to fit. Pay attention to the complete installed dimensions: a drive that meets the bare SSD measurements may exceed the limits once its heatsink or other cooling parts are attached. Check the SSD and cooling manufacturer’s measurements together.
The listed lengths correspond to the form-factor numbers: 2230 is 30 mm long, 2242 is 42 mm, 2260 is 60 mm, 2280 is 80 mm, and 22110 is 110 mm. The number alone does not confirm compatibility; width, total thickness, connector position, and cooling clearances still have to fit the console bay.
Understand the speed and compatibility caveats
Sony recommends a sequential read speed of 5,500 MB/s or faster. That figure is a recommendation, not a promise that every drive at or above that number will work or that every game will perform like it does on the internal SSD. Sony cautions that performance may not match the internal storage in every game and does not guarantee every third-party SSD that appears to meet the listed specifications.

For that reason, verify the interface, capacity, form factor, full dimensions with cooling, and speed rating against Sony’s current M.2 requirements for your exact console model before purchase. Do not treat a retailer’s general “compatible” label as a substitute for checking the complete specification. A drive can advertise a high transfer number yet still be unsuitable if it is M.2 SATA, too thick with its heatsink, or outside the supported size range.
Install and prepare the drive carefully
- Check Sony’s current M.2 installation instructions and diagrams for the exact PS5 Pro model. The support material covers PS5 consoles generally, and Sony’s installation guide includes a CFI-2000/7000 model group; confirm that the instructions apply to your console rather than assuming all model groups are identical.
- Confirm that the SSD is PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe, not M.2 SATA, and that its capacity, form factor, and dimensions including cooling meet the requirements.
- Follow the model-specific instructions to access the expansion bay and seat the drive and its cooling structure correctly. Do not force a part that does not fit.
- Start the console and follow the on-screen formatting prompt. The entire M.2 SSD must be formatted, so treat it as a drive whose existing contents will be erased.
- After setup, use the console’s storage controls to choose where supported games and apps are installed or moved.
Formatting is a significant installation pitfall. If the SSD contains files you need, copy them elsewhere before putting it in the console; the formatting process is for the whole M.2 drive, not just a selected folder. The console will then prepare the drive for game and application storage.
If a game has problems when run from M.2 storage, Sony’s troubleshooting guidance includes moving it to console storage. The M.2 option expands where games can be stored and played, but it is not a guarantee that every third-party drive or every game will behave identically.

Keep saved data separate from installed game data
A game installation contains the files needed to run the game; saved data records progress and other player-specific information. They are separate storage categories, and moving a game to USB or removing an installation should not be treated as a backup plan for saves.
Sony’s storage guide lists PlayStation Plus cloud storage for PS5 saved data and says a Plus membership is required to use that cloud storage. Cloud saves do not free the space used by the installed game itself. If your goal is to make room for another game, check the game and app category rather than assuming save storage will solve it.
Before deleting or moving anything, identify whether you are managing an installation or a save. A copied game on USB is still game data, not a cloud backup of progress. Keep your normal save-management and backup routine separate from decisions about where game installations live.
A practical choice for common situations
You need room now and do not mind reinstalling later
Delete one or more games you are not playing. The purchase remains in your library, but you will need to download or reinstall the title before playing it again. This is the fastest option when you do not want to buy or install hardware.
You want to keep a PS5 game’s files but rarely play it
Move it to USB extended storage if you accept copying it back before play. This preserves an installed copy off the console, not immediate launch access. Labeling or organizing the archive can make it easier to find titles when you decide to restore one.
You want a bigger set of PS5 games ready to launch
Consider a compatible M.2 SSD. It is the option among these choices that adds storage from which PS5 games can be played directly, provided the drive and cooling meet the requirements and the installation is completed correctly.
You mainly need room for PS4 games
USB extended storage can be a useful choice because PS4 games can run directly from it. You do not need to reserve console or M.2 storage for every PS4 title you want to keep available.

You are unsure how much capacity to buy
Start with the titles currently filling Console Storage and the number of games you expect to keep active. Sony publishes a 250 GB to 8 TB M.2 range and an up-to-8-TB expansion limit, but it does not publish an average game size or an average PS5 Pro player’s requirement. Capacity decisions therefore depend on your library rather than a universal estimate.

Sony states a maximum M.2 expansion capacity of up to 8 TB in its storage overview and a supported range of 250 GB to 8 TB in its M.2 guidance. These are hardware limits, not estimates of how many games a drive will hold. Sony does not provide a named, dated figure in the cited guidance for typical game size, average PS5 Pro storage use, or the amount of space an average player needs. Actual room depends on the particular games and content installed, so the console’s Storage screen is the useful starting point for your own library.
The specifications and storage behavior in this guide reflect Sony’s official guidance accessed on October 13, 2026; the cited Sony pages do not state publication dates for the figures. No individual third-party SSD is certified or guaranteed here.
Frequently asked questions
Can I play a PS5 game directly from a USB external drive?
No. Sony says PS5 games stored on USB extended storage must be copied back to console storage or an installed M.2 SSD before they can be played. PS4 games can run directly from USB extended storage.
Will deleting a purchased game make me buy it again?
No. Sony says deleting a game or application does not remove access to the purchase; you can redownload it from your game library. You still need to wait for the installation data to be downloaded or restored.
Does every PS5 game have a Customize option?
No. Customize appears only when a game provides that control. Where it is available, it may let you remove portions such as unused add-ons. If it is absent, use the deletion and storage options shown for that title.
What is the largest M.2 SSD Sony lists for PS5 expansion?
Sony lists up to 8 TB, with a stated supported range of 250 GB to 8 TB. This is a capacity limit, not a promise about usable free space or the number of games the drive will contain.
Is 5,500 MB/s an absolute speed requirement?
Sony describes sequential read speed of 5,500 MB/s or faster as recommended. It does not guarantee every drive that reaches the figure, and performance may differ from the internal SSD in some games.
Can I install an M.2 SATA drive?
No. Sony’s requirements call for a PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe M.2 SSD with Key M. M.2 SATA SSDs are not supported.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDo I need a heatsink?
Yes. Sony requires an effective heat-dissipation structure, such as a heatsink and heat-transfer sheet. Include that cooling hardware when checking the maximum 25 mm width and 11.25 mm total thickness.

Will installing an M.2 SSD preserve files already on it?
No. The entire M.2 SSD must be formatted when it is prepared for the console. Move any files you need elsewhere first.
What if a game does not work properly from the M.2 drive?
Sony’s troubleshooting advice includes moving the game to console storage. Also recheck the drive’s interface, dimensions, cooling, and compatibility with the exact console model.
Do cloud saves create room for more installed games?
No. PlayStation Plus cloud storage concerns saved data, while installed game files occupy their own storage category. Cloud storage does not remove the installation from the console or expansion drive.
