Identify the exact console, model, region, and condition the seller claims, then compare the actual unit and its accessories with references for that specific version. A low price, poor printing, missing packaging, or vague “refurbished” claim should prompt questions, but none proves a console is fake on its own. Ask for clear photos and a return option before buying.
First, work out what the seller is actually offering
“Retro console” can describe very different products: an original vintage system, a licensed modern re-release, an openly described clone, an emulator device, a reproduction shell, or an original system that has been modified. These can differ in value, compatibility, software, and what a buyer should reasonably expect. A device may work perfectly while still being misrepresented as an original console.

Before judging authenticity, record the seller’s claims about the manufacturer, exact model name or number, region, condition (new, used, or refurbished), included accessories, repairs or modifications, and any bundled games. If a listing does not say what the device is, ask directly.
Inspect the listing and seller before you inspect the hardware
Request photos of the actual item
Do not rely on catalog images alone. Ask for clear, current views of the front, back, underside, ports, model and serial labels, seams, controller connectors, power supply, and packaging if it is included. Ask whether the console has been repaired, reshelled, or otherwise modified, and whether included games are original media or pre-installed software.

Use price as a reason to investigate, not a verdict
Compare the asking price with several similar listings for the same model, region, condition, and completeness. Nintendo warns that an offer well below the average retail price can be a counterfeit or scam warning sign, but a low price by itself does not authenticate or condemn a unit. Check the seller’s return terms
Prefer a seller who will accept a return if the item does not match its description. For PlayStation products, Sony’s US buying guide recommends authorized retailers as a way to help ensure authenticity, functionality, return policy, and warranty coverage. That advice is specific to PlayStation and should not be treated as a universal guarantee for vintage systems or other brands. PlayStation’s US buying guide
Compare labels, printing, packaging, and contents with the exact version
Look for inconsistent logos, fuzzy or faded printing, misspellings, model or region details that do not match the listing, and packaging that seems inconsistent with the claimed condition. Nintendo identifies missing packaging or manuals, poor-quality or discoloured packaging print, and products falsely described as refurbished as possible counterfeit warning signs. Packaging and included materials vary across releases, markets, and decades of use. Compare the specific model and region against reliable references rather than assuming every cosmetic difference is suspicious. Conversely, convincing packaging does not by itself prove that the console inside is genuine.

Separate look-alike hardware from the games bundled with it
Nintendo says it has seen an increase in look-alike devices based on older Nintendo consoles. Its warning also covers HDMI sticks and controllers sold with pre-installed game copies or links to game sites. A familiar shell or a large advertised game library does not establish that the hardware is an original Nintendo console, and whether the device runs is separate from whether it is represented accurately. Ask who made the device, whether it is licensed, what software is included, and whether the listing describes it as an original, clone, or emulator. Treat claims about bundled games as a separate point to verify rather than as evidence of hardware authenticity.

Decide whether an internal inspection is worthwhile
Opening a console or cartridge can let a knowledgeable person examine boards, fasteners, or signs of modification, but there is no universal internal checklist for every model. Screw types and construction vary, and a screwdriver set does not authenticate a device. If interior evidence matters, ask the seller for photos or consult someone familiar with that specific hardware.
Avoid opening a sealed, valuable, or return-sensitive item just to follow a generic checklist. Doing so could affect its condition or complicate a return.
Compare listings on evidence, not a single red flag
There is no single cross-brand scoring system in the cited official guidance. For two or more listings, compare the evidence that matters to the particular purchase:

- Condition and completeness: whether the unit and included items match the description.
- Functionality: whether the seller demonstrates operation and describes any known faults.
- Price: how the asking price compares with similar examples in comparable condition.
- Protection: the seller’s reputation and the availability of returns or applicable warranty coverage.
- Accessories: licensing and compatibility evidence where relevant.
If important details remain uncertain after those checks, pause the purchase, request better evidence, or seek a model-specific opinion rather than treating any one clue as conclusive.
