If you can align the money with a known date and are comfortable managing a maturity or an early sale, Treasury bills may suit you better—especially if state and local income-tax treatment matters. Compare actual rates available for the same period, along with access terms, insurance coverage and taxes; there is no universal winner.
How to choose between a Treasury bill and a savings account
Start with your cash timeline: will you need this money before a date you can plan around? A savings account is a bank deposit designed for account access, though the specific account agreement controls withdrawals. A Treasury bill has a set maturity date. Treasury marketable securities can be sold before maturity, but that is a sale rather than the bill’s scheduled maturity payout.

- Favor a high-yield savings account if ready access and the simplicity of keeping cash in a deposit account are priorities.
- Consider Treasury bills if you can match a bill’s maturity to when you expect to use the money, or are willing to manage a pre-maturity sale or reinvestment.
These are general product-fit considerations, not individualized financial or tax advice.
What you are buying—and how the money is protected
Treasury bills
A Treasury bill is a short-term, marketable U.S. government security. It is sold at a discount from its face amount or, in some cases, at face value; at maturity, the holder receives the face amount. The difference between a discounted purchase price and the amount paid at maturity is part of the bill’s return. Bills do not pay monthly interest. TreasuryDirect describes bill terms ranging from a few weeks through 52 weeks, with regularly issued terms generally spanning four to 52 weeks. TreasuryDirect explains Treasury bills; the IRS also discusses their discount treatment in Publication 550.
#1 Best Overall
Treasury marketable securities are backed by the full faith and credit of the U.S. government. A bill is nevertheless a security, not an FDIC-insured bank deposit. TreasuryDirect describes the backing and marketable securities in its overview of Treasury marketable securities.
High-yield savings accounts
A high-yield savings account is a bank deposit account. Eligible deposits at an FDIC-insured bank are covered within applicable insurance limits; coverage depends on the depositor, ownership category and institution. FDIC insurance does not cover Treasury bills. See the FDIC’s deposit insurance guidance for the coverage rules.
Access: account withdrawals versus a bill’s maturity
A savings account is generally the more straightforward choice when you may need cash without planning around a security’s maturity. But withdrawal rules, limits, fees and transfer timing are account-specific, so read the bank’s account agreement rather than assuming every account offers identical access.
With a bill, the predictable endpoint is its maturity: the holder receives the face amount then. Treasury marketable securities may also be sold before maturity, but the sale price and timing depend on the transaction and the platform through which the security is held. Check that platform’s terms before treating an early sale as equivalent to an on-demand bank withdrawal. TreasuryDirect explains transfers and sales in its marketable-securities overview.
Taxes: Treasury interest has a state and local distinction
Treasury bill interest is subject to federal income tax but exempt from state and local income taxes. The IRS describes this treatment in Publication 550 and Topic No. 403. The IRS also lists bank-account interest as taxable interest; bank-account interest does not receive the Treasury-specific state and local exemption. Your own tax result depends on your circumstances, so consult a qualified tax professional if you need advice about a particular return.

There is no useful timeless claim that one option pays more. Treasury bill yields and savings-account offers change, and the relevant numbers must be dated and matched to comparable time periods.

- Find the actual bill result for the term and auction period you are considering. Use an auction result for that bill, not a different maturity or an undated headline rate.
- Check the specific savings account for its current rate, eligibility rules, balance requirements and fees. A rate advertised by one bank is not representative of every high-yield account.
- Compare the same dates and horizon, then consider access and tax treatment as well as the stated yield.
The FDIC’s National Rates and Rate Caps page provides national deposit-rate data and methodology. Its national savings-rate figures are context, not a quote for a particular high-yield savings product; they should not be compared as though they were that account’s offer.

Decision checklist
- You could need the cash unexpectedly: A savings account is generally the more practical starting point, subject to its withdrawal and transfer terms.
- You know when you will use the money: A bill whose maturity matches that date may fit, provided you accept the maturity-based structure.
- You might sell a bill early: Review the holding platform’s sale process and terms instead of assuming immediate access or a guaranteed sale price.
- State or local taxes matter to you: Include the Treasury interest exemption when comparing after-tax outcomes; do not assume bank-account interest shares it.
- You are comparing advertised yields: Use dated, actual offers for comparable periods and account for fees and eligibility conditions.
