What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A suspicious price, rough packaging, or crooked label can be a warning sign, but none proves that a hard drive is counterfeit. Check who is selling it, verify the serial or label using the manufacturer’s own tools, and compare the returned model and capacity with the product in hand and the listing. If anything conflicts, stop relying on the drive for important data and keep your evidence while you contact the seller and manufacturer.
What the signs can—and cannot—tell you
Manufacturer guidance describes warning signs and verification steps, not a market-wide measure of how common counterfeit HDDs are. Seagate’s February 21, 2025 guidance discusses suspected cases involving used drives advertised as new; it recommends checking packaging, warranty, and third-party seller activity. Seagate’s second-hand-market buyer guidance does not establish that counterfeits are “flooding” the market.

A counterfeit is only one possible explanation for a mismatch. A drive may also be used, recertified, misdescribed, or sold through a channel that affects warranty coverage. Treat packaging, price, seller identity, and label quality as reasons to investigate—not proof. A valid serial or warranty result alone also cannot establish that the physical hardware has not been altered or misrepresented.

Find out who is actually selling it
On a marketplace, distinguish the platform from the seller named on the offer. Check the seller’s identity and whether the manufacturer recognizes the seller as authorized. Seagate recommends buying from authorized sources to help ensure legitimacy. A listing that does not clearly identify whether the drive is new, used, OEM, or recertified deserves clarification before purchase.

Compare the offer with like-for-like drives
Compare the total price with listings for the same model, capacity, condition, interface, and form factor. A price far below comparable offers is a reason to investigate further, not a counterfeit test. WD’s Safe Buying Guide, updated March 6, 2026, flags an implausibly low price alongside other warning signs.
Inspect the listing and packaging claims
Look for a precise product name and consistent capacity, model, and condition across the listing, box, and drive label. WD lists incorrect or made-up product names, spelling mistakes, irregular or crooked labels, and low-quality packaging as warning signs. Torn or tampered packaging may warrant questions, but appearance alone cannot authenticate a drive.

After delivery: compare the drive, label, and computer report
- Keep the evidence. Save the listing, order details, receipt, and packaging before anything is discarded. Photograph the drive label and any relevant codes.
- Compare the printed details. Check the model and capacity on the packaging and drive label against the seller’s description.
- Check what the computer detects. Once connected, compare the reported model and capacity with the physical label and listing. A lower reported capacity than the printed amount is a warning sign, not by itself a forensic determination of counterfeiting.
- Use the manufacturer’s official lookup. Follow the appropriate label, serial, or warranty-check route below. Compare the result with the product in hand rather than treating a successful lookup as conclusive proof.
How to check a Seagate drive
Seagate’s Verify my drive page checks a code associated with eligible drive labels and displays capacity information in its verification flow.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute- Check whether the label has the required QR code, number, and “verify.seagate.com” text.
- Use the code on Seagate’s official verification page and review the returned capacity information.
- Compare that result with the capacity printed on the drive and packaging, the listing, and what the computer reports.
- If the capacity does not match, Seagate directs buyers to contact the place of purchase.
The tool applies to labels that meet its requirements; a label without the required details does not establish that a drive is counterfeit. For warranty eligibility, use Seagate’s official warranty route and check the serial number against the product description and seller’s claims.

How to check a WD drive
Use WD’s official warranty check with the drive’s serial number, then compare the returned product information with the label, listing, and current WD product information. The warranty result helps assess product description and support eligibility; it is not a physical authenticity test on its own.
WD’s Safe Buying Guide highlights warning signs including incorrect product names, spelling errors, torn or crooked labels, low-quality packaging, a stated capacity exceeding the actual capacity, and a price that seems implausibly low. Check whether the model and capacity make sense together rather than relying on one label detail.

What to do when something does not match
- Pause use for important data. Do not make a suspicious drive the only copy of valuable files.
- Preserve records. Keep the listing, receipt, packaging, label photographs, and screenshots or results from the manufacturer’s tool.
- Contact the seller. Describe the specific mismatch—for example, the returned capacity versus the listing—and ask for a resolution.
- Contact the manufacturer. Ask about the lookup result, product identity, and warranty eligibility. Regional origin and seller channel can affect support.
- Report suspected counterfeits through the manufacturer’s route. WD asks customers to report suspected counterfeit products to [email protected] and include details such as product images and proof of purchase.
Choose a safer replacement
If you decide not to keep the drive, look for an authorized hard-drive retailer and confirm who the seller is before ordering. Compare offers with the same capacity, interface, form factor, and condition, and check warranty eligibility for your region. A clear listing and authorized channel reduce uncertainty; they do not replace checking that the delivered product matches what was sold.
