Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

These aren’t four universal changes: Roku setup may already choose the right display type, and refresh-rate matching is optional. The steps below follow Roku Support documentation; menus and availability can vary by model and software.
1. Check the display type and leave it on Automatic
During setup, Roku configures display settings. To review them later, open Settings > Set Display Type and choose Automatic. Roku says this lets the player select a resolution that matches your TV. Automatic detection is appropriate for most situations.

Roku Support’s setup guide puts it this way: “Navigate to Settings > Set Display Type and choose Automatic to allow Roku to choose the correct resolution that matches your TV.” Roku setup guide
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If the picture is missing or the detected display type is wrong, you can select a supported display type manually in that menu. The screen may briefly go black while the setting changes; confirm the picture when prompted. Don’t pick the highest resolution simply because it is available—your TV and connection need to support it. See Roku’s display-type guidance.

2. Decide whether to enable Smart TV Experience
For a privacy check, go to Settings > Privacy > Smart TV Experience. Roku documents Automatic Content Recognition (ACR) as off by default. ACR can recognize shows or movies watched through connected-device inputs and support features such as More Ways to Watch. Review the setting and decide whether those features are worth enabling for you. Roku’s Smart TV Experience and privacy information
Turning ACR off later does not erase data Roku says was collected or used while it was enabled. Treat this as a choice about future collection and related features, not a way to delete past viewing data.

3. Turn off browsing autoplay if you prefer still previews
To stop certain videos from automatically playing while you navigate Roku screens, open Settings > Accessibility > Auto-play video and turn it off. Roku displays images instead of automatically playing those videos. This is a device-level option, so change it separately on each Roku where you want the same behavior. Roku Auto-play video support
This control does not govern every streaming app. Individual apps may have their own autoplay settings, so turning off Roku’s option cannot guarantee that all previews or next episodes stop playing automatically.

4. Try refresh-rate matching only if your player supports it
On compatible current-generation players, the path is Settings > System > Advanced system settings > Advanced display settings > Auto-adjust display refresh rate. When enabled, the player can switch to the native format of a movie, video, or TV show. Roku notes that some apps may not apply the setting. Roku advanced display settings
This is a preference, not a required setup change. A switch between video modes can briefly flash the screen black when playback starts or stops. If that interruption bothers you—or the option is absent on your model—leave it off.

Two useful setup notes
Ads: the available controls are limited
Roku’s ad category controls apply to non-video banner ads in Roku menus and screensavers. They require Personalized Ads to be enabled and do not cover video ads, partner-app ads, or certain ads shown to all users. Hiding an ad replaces it with another ad; these controls are not a universal ad-off switch. Roku ad preferences

Accessibility options are personal choices
If you need spoken navigation, Roku’s screen reader is available on Roku TV models and players currently sold in the US and Canada, with Roku OS 7.5 or later. Closed captions appear only when the movie or show supports them. Check the relevant options under Settings > Accessibility; they are useful when needed, but not settings everyone should change. Roku’s setup process includes connecting the player, updating its software, and configuring display settings. Roku recommends using the supplied HDMI cable. Some stick-style devices may need a short HDMI extender depending on port placement or clearance, but it is not a required purchase for every setup. Roku setup guide
