How to Spot a ClickFix Attack Before Running a Command

ClickFix turns a fake verification or playback prompt into a request to run code. Learn the warning signs, what to do if you ran a command, and how organizations can layer defenses.

ClickFix turns a familiar “verify or fix” prompt into a request to run code yourself. If a page asks you to open Run, Terminal, or PowerShell and paste a command to prove you are human, play a video, or watch a match, stop. A fake CAPTCHA or security check can be the first step in a malware-delivery chain.

What is a ClickFix attack?

ClickFix is a social-engineering technique, not a single malware family. Instead of relying only on a silent software exploit, the attacker persuades a person to execute a command. The prompt may claim that a small technical problem needs fixing: “I am not a robot,” “Verify you are human,” a CAPTCHA, a security check, or a message about a missing video codec.

The sports-event scenario is one possible lure: someone looking for a stream or ticket may encounter a page claiming that a verification step or playback fix is required. The same method also appears in phishing, malicious advertising, and compromised or malicious websites. Microsoft describes the technique and its varied delivery routes in its ClickFix campaign analysis and technique overview.

How does the fake check become a malware trap?

  1. A page creates a reason to act. A deceptive prompt imitates a CAPTCHA, security warning, update, or playback error and tells the visitor that an action is needed.
  2. The page supplies or describes a command. In documented examples, page scripts can put a command on the clipboard, then instruct the visitor to open Windows Run, Terminal, or PowerShell and paste it. Other prompts tell the user to enter a command manually.
  3. The visitor executes it. At this point, the person—not merely the browser—has initiated code. Microsoft reports examples involving Windows and macOS, but the exact steps and campaign methods vary.
  4. The command may start a delivery chain. What happens next depends on the campaign. The command can lead to malware, including information-stealing payloads; the prompt alone does not establish which payload, if any, will follow.

Proofpoint has reported ClickFix campaigns associated with multiple malware families. Those are campaign observations, not evidence that every fake check installs a particular family. A July 2025 CISA-hosted joint advisory describes an actor-specific example in which Interlock actors used fake CAPTCHA instructions to persuade users to execute an encoded PowerShell process. Neither source establishes how common any one variant is: Proofpoint’s ClickFix analysis and the CISA-hosted advisory.

Why sports searches can be an effective lure—and what the numbers do not show

Time pressure and a strong desire to reach a stream, ticket page, or highlight can make a visitor more likely to follow a convincing on-screen instruction. A page may frame the command as the last step before answering “how do I watch the match?” But the event setting is an illustrative lure, not proof that major sporting events produce a measurable rise in ClickFix attacks. The available reporting does not quantify the prevalence of sports-themed prompts.

Event-related fraud figures should not be mistaken for ClickFix statistics. ACI Worldwide’s June 18, 2026 release describes analysis of 24.5 million transactions across 61 live-event merchants. It reports that during the build-up to Copa America 2024, card-not-present attempted fraud reached 4% of transaction value and averaged 3.6 times the 2023 baseline. The same release attributes a separate count of 9,741 World Cup-related domains registered in April 2026 to Check Point Research. These are payment-fraud and domain-registration figures, respectively; neither counts malicious ClickFix pages. See ACI Worldwide’s release.

What should you do if a page asks you to run a command?

If you have not run it

  • Do not paste or type a command supplied by an unexpected webpage.
  • Do not open Run, Terminal, or PowerShell to pass a CAPTCHA, restore a video, install a supposed codec, or access a stream.
  • Close the page. If you need the event or service, navigate to its known official site independently rather than following the prompt.

If you already ran it

  • Stop using that device for sensitive activity, including entering passwords, until it has been assessed.
  • Promptly contact your organization’s IT or security team if it is a work device, or a trusted incident-response professional if it is personal.
  • Tell them what the page asked you to do and what you ran, if you can do so without running the command again. Do not assume that closing the tab undid the command.

How can organizations reduce the risk?

Organizations can assess defenses at several control points rather than relying on a single product or assuming one measure blocks every variant. Microsoft’s analysis discusses detection and investigation of suspicious activity; the event-focused article by Bernard Montel, Tenable’s Field CTO for EMEA, also advocates endpoint, web-access, and awareness measures. The appropriate coverage depends on an organization’s devices, platforms, and capacity to investigate alerts.

  • Endpoint monitoring and response: Evaluate whether endpoint telemetry and investigation workflows can surface suspicious command execution, including activity involving shells or scripting tools. Confirm that the team can triage alerts and respond, rather than treating deployment alone as protection.
  • Web filtering: Assess whether web controls can reduce exposure to known malicious or deceptive destinations. Filtering is one layer; it cannot establish that every newly created or compromised page will be blocked.
  • Targeted training: Teach staff that a webpage’s request to paste a command into a system tool is not a normal way to prove humanity, fix playback, or pass a security check. Use realistic examples such as “Verify you are human” and “video won’t load.”
  • Platform-aware investigation: Microsoft reports examples involving Windows and macOS. Review which platforms are in use and whether monitoring and response procedures cover them; campaign mechanics differ.

For the underlying descriptions, see Microsoft’s campaign analysis and Montel’s event-focused discussion of ClickFix.

The practical rule

A CAPTCHA asks you to interact with the page; it should not require you to execute a command on your device. Treat any unexpected instruction to open Run, Terminal, or PowerShell and paste code as a warning sign, whether the page promises a stream, a video fix, or a routine security check.
