Start by checking whether your computer or phone actually falls short. If it still meets your workload and has security support, keeping it longer may be the simplest way to avoid a purchase. If you do need an upgrade, buy only the capacity and performance your work requires, and verify compatibility before paying for a component.
Why storage and memory are getting more expensive
Demand from large cloud and AI infrastructure operators is competing for memory and storage capacity, while new fabrication plants take time to reach volume production. Jim Handy of Objective Analysis described those pressures in a July 27, 2026 TechTarget article. More production or weaker demand could ease the balance, but Handy did not identify a reliable date for that change.

Gartner’s February 26, 2026 forecast estimated that combined DRAM and SSD prices would rise 130% by the end of 2026 compared with 2025. It also forecast PC prices rising 17% and smartphone prices 13% over the same comparison. These are forecasts, not confirmed year-end prices or a promise that every product will rise by the same amount. Retail prices vary by country, seller, capacity, and device generation.
Gartner also projected that memory would account for 23% of PC bill of materials in 2026, up from 16% in 2025. Its forecast included a 10.4% decline in worldwide PC shipments and an 8.4% decline in smartphone shipments in 2026 versus 2025, alongside a projected 20% increase in consumer PC lifetimes by the end of 2026. Gartner Senior Director Analyst Ranjit Atwal said, “Higher prices will narrow the range of devices available, prompting buyers to hold on to devices for longer, fundamentally altering upgrade cycles.” Gartner further forecast that “The sub-$500 entry-level PC segment will disappear by 2028”; that is a forecast, not an established outcome.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Memory and storage do not necessarily move together. In its own pricing updates, computer maker Framework described a month when DDR5 costs were stable while SSD sourcing costs rose. It also said it had qualified multiple drive suppliers for some prebuilt systems. Those company-specific observations illustrate why one component’s price trend should not be assumed to predict another’s; they are not a market-wide price index. See Framework’s company updates.
TrendForce’s July 30, 2026 outlook estimated the DRAM supply-demand sufficiency ratio at about -1% to -2% for 2026 and expected the gap to widen in 2027. For NAND, it said production gains from higher-layer migration and new fab ramps could turn the sufficiency ratio positive in 2027, while enterprise demand and possible AI demand remained variables. Supply forecasts do not translate directly into a guaranteed consumer price or a timetable for lower retail quotes. TrendForce’s outlook is one view of those supply conditions.

Decide whether you need to buy now
Do not replace a working device simply because market prices are in the news. Assess whether it still runs the software you need, performs adequately for your actual tasks, and receives security updates. HP’s buying guidance recommends weighing performance, modern software requirements, and end-of-support status before deciding whether to replace a computer. If the device meets those needs and remains supported, waiting can defer the expense. If support has ended or real workloads no longer run well, a low price alone does not make continued use the right choice. See HP’s computer-buying guidance.
For a current device that is slow, identify the cause before shopping: insufficient storage, memory pressure, an aging processor, or software that no longer supports the machine can call for different solutions. A storage upgrade will not fix every performance problem, and added capacity is not a substitute for a device that has reached the end of its support life.

Match capacity and performance to the work
Write down the applications and files you actually use, then choose a configuration that supports them with reasonable headroom. Everyday productivity, 4K video editing, and software development can require different memory and storage capacities and different performance. Avoid paying for a larger or faster component unless it changes something that matters in your workload.
- Everyday productivity: prioritize a configuration that comfortably handles your normal browser, office, communication, and file-storage needs; do not assume a high-end component is necessary.
- Large creative projects: consider whether editing 4K footage or working with large assets makes memory capacity, storage space, or transfer speed a real bottleneck.
- Development work: account for the tools and project sizes you use, including local virtual machines or other resource-intensive tasks if they are part of your routine.
When choosing a new computer, compare available configurations, alternate processor generations, warranty and support, reliability, and software compatibility—not just the headline memory or storage figure. A lower-capacity configuration saves money only if it meets your needs without forcing an expensive replacement soon afterward. HP recommends matching specifications to the workload and evaluating the whole configuration rather than treating one component in isolation.

Check whether a storage upgrade will fit
A replaceable NVMe SSD can be an option for some computers, but storage may be soldered, use another interface or physical size, or have device-specific capacity limits. Before comparing drives, consult the exact model’s service manual and confirm all of the following:
- Whether the storage device is user-replaceable at all.
- The supported interface and physical drive length.
- The maximum supported capacity, if the manufacturer specifies one.
- Whether opening or modifying the device affects warranty coverage or support.
- Whether the replacement’s capacity and performance suit the intended workload.
Do not shop by a generic description such as “NVMe SSD” alone. No current compatibility information for any particular computer model or current price comparison across upgrade options is published here, so check the manual and current local quotes for your exact device. Changing SSD sourcing and inventory, as Framework’s updates illustrate, also makes old price lists a poor guide to today’s offers.

Compare the ways to avoid unnecessary spending
| Option | When it can make sense | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Keep the current device | It performs the required work and still receives security support. | Software compatibility, support status, and whether the actual bottleneck can be addressed without replacement. |
| Choose a different new-device configuration | An alternative capacity, processor generation, or specification meets the workload at lower total cost. | Required performance, capacity, warranty, support life, and compatibility with necessary software. |
| Upgrade a replaceable SSD | The device supports a compatible, replaceable drive and more storage is the real need. | Service-manual details, interface, physical length, capacity support, warranty implications, and current price. |
| Manage or reuse existing storage (organizations) | Policies and tools can reclaim capacity or extend the useful life of equipment. | Retention, legal and contractual duties, security, recovery, hardware health, compatibility, and data sanitation. |
There is no single cheapest option established across all devices and regions. Compare the total system or upgrade cost, including warranty and support, and make sure the lower-cost choice still meets the work you need it to do.
What organizations can do before buying more capacity
Recover capacity carefully
Storage-management software, deduplication, and archiving can help some organizations make existing capacity go further, according to Handy’s TechTarget coverage. They are not automatic substitutes for new storage: establish retention and deletion policies only after checking legal, contractual, security, and recovery requirements. Indiscriminate deletion can create compliance and business risks.
Buy incrementally and reuse responsibly
Handy also describes salvaging older drives after secure data destruction and cites Meta’s work on reusing server memory. For enterprise fleets, incremental upgrades can reduce the risk of committing to a large bulk purchase before market conditions change. Reuse requires verified provenance, health checks, compatibility testing, and reliable data sanitation; this guidance is not a blanket endorsement of used consumer components.
