To speedrun Minecraft, pick a legal category, learn a repeatable route, and practice its hardest segments separately. A beginner route is an economy of actions: gather wood, food, iron, a bucket and portal materials in the Overworld; enter the Nether for a bastion, gold trades and a fortress; collect blaze rods and Ender pearls; locate the stronghold; then defeat the Ender Dragon. Start on a set seed to learn mechanics and routing, then move to random seeds when you can adapt to unfamiliar terrain.

Choose your speedrun category first
Your category determines what practice is useful and what a leaderboard submission can mean. In a random-seed run, every attempt generates a new world, so you must make decisions with incomplete information. A set-seed run uses a seed selected in advance, allowing the same villages, lava pools, bastions and fortresses to be rehearsed repeatedly. Minecraft’s official speedrunning overview explains that seeds are numbers used to reliably generate a world.

| Decision factor | Random seed | Set seed |
|---|---|---|
| World repeatability | New terrain and structures on each attempt | The same terrain and structures every attempt |
| Main skill | Rapid scouting, route selection and adaptation | Precise execution and memorized routing |
| Reset pattern | Frequent resets when the opening fails to provide food, iron, lava or a practical route | Fewer unknowns, but mistakes in a known route can still require a reset |
| Best starting use | Testing decision-making and improvisation | Learning movement, portal construction, structures and the End fight |
| Leaderboard meaning | Measures performance across unpredictable worlds | Measures execution on the approved seed and category rules |
For most new runners, the efficient progression is set seed first, random seed second. Use the set seed to remove cognitive overload while you learn portal building, bastion movement, fortress combat, stronghold navigation and the dragon fight. Once those actions are reliable, random-seed attempts teach you when to abandon a poor route and when a risky detour is justified.
Confirm version, category and submission rules
Speedrun rules are category-specific and can change. Before you submit a run, read the current rules, timing definition, allowed settings and verification requirements on Speedrun.com. Check the exact Minecraft version as well: the commonly practiced beginner route is the 1.16.1 Random Seed Glitchless route, while other versions and categories can have different generation, mechanics or restrictions.
#1 Best Overall
- Confirm whether the category is random seed or set seed.
- Verify the required game version and whether a particular launcher, mod or configuration is permitted.
- Check how timing starts and ends, what counts as a valid completion, and what video or audio evidence must be supplied.
- Read the current leaderboard rules immediately before submitting; do not rely on an old tutorial.
Do not describe a personal time as a record unless it matches the current category and leaderboard. Minecraft’s official 2018 article mentioned a historical random-seed completion of 9 minutes 52 seconds; that figure is historical context, not a current record or a realistic beginner target.
Build the Overworld opening around an early portal
The opening objective is not to collect every useful item. It is to obtain the minimum tools, food and materials that let you enter the Nether quickly and survive long enough to complete its objectives.

Craft a basic pickaxe and the other tools needed to collect stone, food and portal materials. Gather enough cobblestone for replacements and a furnace, but avoid long mining sessions. Extra tools are worthwhile only when they prevent a later death or backtrack.
2. Secure food before committing to the Nether
Collect a dependable food supply while moving toward your next objective. A route that saves a few seconds but leaves you hungry can become slower after regeneration delays, forced hunting or a death. Prefer food that is immediately available in the opening terrain rather than detouring for an ideal long-term supply.
3. Find iron for a bucket and flint-and-steel materials
Iron enables the water bucket used in surface-lava portal construction and supports other emergency tools. Flint-and-steel materials let you ignite the portal. The exact amount and source vary with the world, so learn several legal ways to obtain them rather than waiting for one perfect cave layout.
4. Construct a portal from surface lava
The fastest beginner route usually uses a lava pool and a water bucket instead of mining obsidian. Practice placing water and blocks in a fixed sequence until you can build a correctly shaped portal without hesitation. Your goal is a safe, repeatable construction, not a stylish one. Misplaced water, exposed lava or a missing ignition item can erase the time saved by the technique.

Reset when the opening terrain does not offer a workable combination of food, iron, lava and a practical path to the Nether. A reset is efficient if the alternative is a long search with no clear improvement. Do not reset merely because the spawn is not perfect; random-seed skill comes from recognizing acceptable worlds and extracting value from them.

Why the Nether is the main bottleneck
The Nether combines navigation, hostile mobs, lava, unusual terrain and structure routing. The central route uses two structures for different resources: a bastion for gold and piglin bartering, and a fortress for blaze rods. The official Minecraft route overview and the Minecraft Wiki’s 1.16-and-later tutorial describe this bastion-and-fortress sequence as the core modern strategy.
Enter with a survival plan
Before leaving the portal, note its surroundings and keep blocks available for bridges, cover and emergency escapes. Moving quickly is useful only when you can recover from a bad spawn or a hostile encounter. Practice placing blocks while moving, sealing openings and retreating through a portal without getting trapped.
Route the bastion for gold and bartering
Bastions have different layouts, so learn the major types on a set seed and then practice identifying them in random terrain. Your immediate goals are gold and a safe place to barter with piglins. Gold can be obtained from the structure, and bartering can provide Ender pearls and obsidian that reduce the need for additional Overworld resources.
Do not treat every bastion as equally valuable. A structure with a clear route to gold and a safe barter position may be faster than a richer but confusing layout. Mark your entrance mentally, avoid dead ends, and keep a block barrier between yourself and threats when you need time to sort trades. If the structure is poor, leave rather than forcing a risky detour.
Collect blaze rods in a fortress
The fortress supplies blaze rods, which become blaze powder for crafting the eyes needed to locate the stronghold. Learn to recognize fortress corridors, open areas and likely spawner approaches. Fight only as much as necessary, use cover against fireballs, and leave once you have the required rods. The fastest route is worthless if a greedy extra fight kills the run.
Practice the complete fortress segment: enter, locate a workable blaze area, collect rods, manage fire and food, then return to a known safe path. The exit matters as much as the first encounter because many runs fail while leaving with a full inventory and low health.
Trade for Ender pearls efficiently
Piglin bartering is the main way the modern route obtains Ender pearls. Keep the trading area controlled so you can drop gold, collect outputs and retreat without losing items to lava or hostile mobs. Learn how many trades your chosen category and route normally require, but keep enough flexibility for poor luck. The correct response to an unlucky sequence is a safe adjustment, not panic or an unplanned fight.

Return to the Overworld and locate the stronghold
Once you have blaze powder and enough pearls for your planned route, leave the Nether through the intended portal or exit path. Use eyes of ender to locate the stronghold. Throwing eyes from more than one position lets you compare their directions and narrow the search; this is commonly called triangulation.
Make stronghold navigation a separate skill
Strongholds contain repeated corridors, staircases and rooms that can send an inexperienced runner in circles. Practice recognizing intersections, marking your mental route and reversing direction when an apparent path becomes a dead end. The portal room is the destination; mining through random walls may save time only when you already understand the structure and can do so without falling into lava or missing the room.
Carry the resources needed to activate the portal and avoid discarding critical items during the search. A good Nether split can be lost by one missed turn, so measure stronghold practice by successful portal-room arrivals, not only by how fast you throw the first eye.
Prepare a repeatable End fight
The final section is not simply a damage race. Learn the dragon’s perch behavior and rehearse a legal kill method for your category, such as a bed-based strategy where beds are permitted. The exact technique depends on the rules and version, so verify it before using it in a submitted run.

- Enter the End and orient yourself before committing to the attack.
- Use the practiced method when the dragon reaches the expected position.
- Place and trigger items deliberately; rushed inputs can cause self-damage or a missed cycle.
- Recover from an imperfect perch instead of improvising a dangerous attack.
Practice until the End fight is a routine sequence with a recovery plan. A run that reaches the End consistently is valuable even when the final kill is not yet fast.
A practice plan that turns knowledge into speed
Full attempts are a poor substitute for targeted drills. The Speedrun.com guide index includes setup, bastion, fortress, End-fight and beginner resources, while MCSR.info organizes the 1.16.1 Random Seed Glitchless route and highlights difficult moments. Use those sections to isolate one skill at a time.
Drill 1: portal construction
Load a world with a visible lava pool and repeat the water-and-block sequence until you can ignite a portal without pausing to recall the next placement. Add variations such as uneven ground and a partially obstructed pool. Stop when the motion is automatic and safe.
Rank #4
Drill 2: bastion routing
On a set seed, enter each major bastion layout you encounter. Identify the entrance, the shortest safe route to gold, a barter position and an escape path. Repeat until you can explain your route while moving, then test it with limited blocks and food.
Drill 3: fortress fighting and extraction
Practice approaching a fortress, collecting rods under pressure and leaving with health and food intact. Include fireball cover, block placement and a retreat route. Your success metric is a complete in-and-out segment, not a single lucky blaze encounter.
Drill 4: blind travel and stronghold triangulation
Rehearse moving between Nether and Overworld objectives without relying on perfect landmarks. Throw eyes from separate locations, estimate the shared direction and navigate the stronghold to its portal room. Repeat missed-turn scenarios so recovery becomes familiar.
Drill 5: the End fight
Run the complete dragon sequence repeatedly. Practice the chosen kill method, the timing of item placement and what to do when the dragon does not perch as expected.
Drill 6: combine segments into attempts
After each segment is reliable, perform complete runs. Review where time was lost: opening route, portal construction, bastion decisions, fortress combat, travel, stronghold navigation or the End. Return to the weakest segment instead of mindlessly starting another full attempt.
Choose between safer and faster decisions
Speedrunning is an expected-time problem, not a contest to take the most dangerous line every time. Compare a route’s completion time with its death risk, resource cost and your current skill.
| Situation | Safer choice | Faster choice | When to use the faster line |
|---|---|---|---|
| Overworld resources | Collect extra food or iron | Enter the Nether with only the minimum | When the spawn clearly supports recovery and you have practiced the route |
| Bastion | Build cover and secure an exit | Move directly through exposed areas | When you recognize the layout and can retreat immediately |
| Fortress | Fight from cover and leave after enough rods | Take open fights or hunt extra rods | Only when the category route needs the extra supply and your combat is consistent |
| Stronghold | Follow known corridors and check intersections | Mine directly toward a suspected portal room | When you understand the structure and can avoid lava or dead ends |
| End | Wait for a predictable perch | Attempt an aggressive cycle | After the aggressive sequence is practiced and legal for the category |
A death costs the entire attempt, so a line that saves ten seconds but fails often can be slower over an evening than a conservative line you complete repeatedly.
Best Value
Common failure modes and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| You spend several minutes before entering the Nether | Over-collecting tools, food or armor | Set a minimum inventory and reset or move on once it is met |
| The portal build repeatedly fails | Unpracticed water placement or poor lava-pool selection | Drill the construction on varied pools and prioritize a clean setup over speed |
| You reach a bastion but cannot find gold or an exit | No route recognition or mental map | Study each layout on a set seed and rehearse the escape path |
| You die after collecting blaze rods | No extraction plan, low health or greedy extra fights | Practice the return route and leave immediately after meeting the rod goal |
| You miss the stronghold portal room | Random corridor choices and no recovery method | Practice intersections, triangulation and deliberate backtracking |
| The dragon fight stalls | Unclear perch timing or unfamiliar recovery | Repeat the End drill and learn a backup cycle for a missed perch |
| Your run is rejected | Outdated rules or missing verification evidence | Read the current Speedrun.com category page and submission requirements before recording a leaderboard attempt |
What a complete beginner run should track
Use splits to locate the actual bottleneck. Record the time you enter the Nether, finish the bastion objective, leave the fortress, enter the stronghold, reach the End and defeat the dragon. These checkpoints show whether a slower opening is being recovered by a clean Nether or whether a fast portal is being lost to structure navigation.
- Opening: Can you obtain food, iron and portal materials without aimless travel?
- Nether: Can you identify a workable bastion and fortress route while staying alive?
- Inventory: Do you retain the items needed for pearls, blaze powder, eyes and the End fight?
- Navigation: Can you leave poor structures and recover from missed turns?
- Finish: Is your dragon method legal, practiced and repeatable?
Do not chase a published record as a first milestone. Authoritative sources do not establish a stable beginner-average completion time, and leaderboard standings change. Set personal goals such as completing the route, surviving the Nether, or improving one split while keeping the category and version constant.
Recording and submitting a run
When you are ready for leaderboard attempts, record the complete run in the format required by the current category. Keep the game version, settings and any permitted tools consistent with the rules. Review the video yourself before submission: confirm that the timer start and end are visible or otherwise verifiable, that no prohibited software or setting appears, and that the run meets the category’s evidence standard.
Rules and allowed tools can change, so revisit the official Speedrun.com guide and rules ecosystem whenever you change versions or categories. A run that is fast but undocumented, incorrectly timed or made under an invalid configuration is not a valid leaderboard result.
A practical first-month progression
Week 1: mechanics
Learn basic tools, food collection, bucket handling and portal construction. Spend more time repeating the portal drill than attempting complete runs.
Recommended Free Tools
Week 2: Nether structures
Use a set seed to learn bastion identification, gold collection, piglin bartering, fortress entry, blaze fights and safe extraction.
Week 3: navigation and End
Practice eye throws, stronghold triangulation, portal-room navigation and the dragon kill sequence. Add recovery drills for missed paths and imperfect perches.
Week 4: complete attempts
Run the full route, record splits and review deaths. Change one decision at a time so you know whether an improvement came from a safer route, better movement or better luck.
Bottom line for new runners
Learn the route in a set seed, but learn to win in random seeds. The essential chain is Overworld resources, a lava-pool portal, bastion gold and bartering, fortress blaze rods, stronghold navigation and a practiced End fight. Progress comes from isolating those segments, measuring where attempts fail and following the live category rules before claiming or submitting a time.
