You can often make a slow Windows PC feel more responsive using tools already built into Windows—but first find out whether the strain is coming from apps, storage, malware, or hardware. Work through the checks below in order, and avoid deleting files or disabling programs you do not recognize.
1. Restart and close what you are not using
Restart the PC, then open only the apps and browser tabs you need. A restart clears temporary activity, while closing unused apps can immediately reduce demand on memory and the processor.

2. Find out what is slowing the PC
Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc. In Processes, look for apps using substantial CPU, memory, or disk resources. Select a process only if you recognize it and know you do not need it; avoid ending unfamiliar Windows processes. The Performance view can help show whether CPU, memory, or disk activity is the pressure point. Microsoft’s Windows performance guidance recommends checking resource use before choosing a fix.

In Task Manager, open Startup apps and review the list. Disable only programs you recognize and do not need to start automatically. This reduces work during sign-in and in the background, but does not uninstall the app; you can still open it when needed. Microsoft explains the setting in its guide to configuring startup applications.

4. Check for Windows updates and malware
Install relevant Windows updates
Open Settings > Windows Update and check for updates. Optional driver updates may be listed, but install them when relevant to your device or a problem you are addressing rather than treating every optional driver as a required performance fix.
Run a quick security scan
If the slowdown is sudden, unexplained, or accompanied by suspicious behavior, open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection and run a Quick scan. A scan can check for malware that may be consuming resources; it is not a guarantee that every performance problem is malware-related.

5. Free space carefully with Windows’ storage tools
A nearly full system drive can constrain Windows and apps. Start at Settings > System > Storage. Depending on your Windows version, you may see Temporary files, Cleanup recommendations, or Storage Sense. Review what each category contains before removing it. Microsoft also describes ways to free up drive space and the available Windows storage settings.

Storage Sense can remove temporary files and, according to its configuration, items in the Recycle Bin. It operates on the system drive, usually C:. Microsoft states that “Storage Sense works on your system drive only, which contains the Windows operating system and is usually referred to as C:.” Downloads and cloud files are not cleaned by default; check the settings before enabling cleanup options for them. Be especially careful if a cleanup option refers to a previous Windows installation: deleting it removes the ability to roll back to that earlier version. Keep personal files you need, and verify selections before confirming deletion. If the drive remains full, Microsoft suggests moving personal files to external storage such as a USB drive; that can free capacity, but buying a drive will not fix slowdowns caused by unrelated issues.
Use Disk Cleanup if available
Disk Cleanup is another built-in way to review and remove eligible temporary or system files. Search for Disk Cleanup from Start, choose the drive, and inspect the categories before confirming. Do not select a category unless you understand what it removes.

6. Uninstall apps you no longer use and limit background activity
Remove apps you recognize and no longer need from Settings > Apps > Installed apps (the wording may differ by Windows version). For apps you keep, some versions and app types offer background permissions in Settings. Restrict background activity only when you are comfortable with the app updating or notifying you less often. Neither step requires installing an optimizer.
7. Try visual and power settings only if they suit your PC
Reduce visual effects
Search Windows for Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows and consider choosing Adjust for best performance. This reduces visual effects and may make some systems feel more responsive, at the cost of a less polished appearance. The improvement is not guaranteed.

Consider Best performance power mode on a plugged-in laptop
In Settings > System > Power & battery (or Power & battery, depending on version), select Best performance if available. Microsoft cautions that this mode uses more power; a laptop battery may drain faster and the device may become warmer. It is a trade-off, not a universal setting to leave on.
8. Know when built-in cleanup is not enough
If resource use stays high after closing apps, removing unneeded startup work, checking security, and reviewing storage, the cause may be a specific hardware or software fault. Microsoft notes that older PCs whose hardware no longer meets modern performance needs may not improve significantly from these steps. A general checklist cannot identify every failing component or compatibility issue, so persistent slowdowns may need device-specific troubleshooting.
Windows version matters: Microsoft’s performance guidance covers Windows 10 and Windows 11, but Settings paths can differ. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; Microsoft says free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes ended on that date.
