How to Find and Free Up Programs Using Too Much Memory

Use Task Manager, Activity Monitor, or GNOME System Monitor to identify memory-heavy apps, close only what you recognize, and judge RAM pressure by symptoms and system indicators.

Use your computer’s built-in system monitor to identify apps consuming memory, then close only programs you recognize and no longer need. A high memory figure by itself does not prove an app is the problem: look for slowdowns, low available memory, or sustained swap activity before deciding what to do.

Find memory-heavy programs in Windows 10 or Windows 11

  1. Open Task Manager: Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, then select Processes. Sort or scan the Memory column to see which running apps are using the most RAM.
  2. Check overall use: Select Performance and open Memory to see system-wide memory use and available memory. Microsoft recommends checking memory alongside CPU and disk activity when troubleshooting performance (Microsoft’s Windows performance guidance).
  3. Close work you recognize: Save open documents, then close an app normally if you no longer need it. Do not end an unfamiliar process just because its name is obscure or its memory use is nonzero; Windows and your apps need background processes to function.
  4. Review startup apps if use returns: In Task Manager, select Startup apps. Disable only programs you recognize and do not want launching automatically. Startup activity can add background resource use.
  5. Test responsiveness: Close unused browser tabs and apps. If the computer still feels slow, restart it and reopen only the programs you need; Microsoft includes restarting and closing unused apps among its performance suggestions (Windows performance tips).

Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft’s performance page. If you still use it, that support status is relevant when considering updates and ongoing security.

Find memory-heavy apps on a Mac

  1. Open Activity Monitor and select Memory.
  2. Review the process list and the summary at the bottom of the window. Apple’s Activity Monitor User Guide identifies Memory Pressure, Physical Memory, Memory Used, App Memory, Wired Memory, Compressed, Cached Files, and Swap Used as useful context (Apple: View memory usage in Activity Monitor).
  3. Look at the Memory Pressure graph together with symptoms such as repeated sluggishness. Apple says the graph “Graphically represents how efficiently your memory is serving your processing needs.” Pressure reflects factors including free memory, swap rate, wired memory, and cached files—not just the amount labeled Memory Used.
  4. Quit an app you recognize and no longer need using its normal Quit command so it can save its state. Use force quit when an app or process must be stopped, not as routine memory cleanup (Apple: Quit a process in Activity Monitor).

Do not try to “clean” cached files merely because their figure is large. macOS uses otherwise-unused memory for cached files that can help apps reopen faster, and it can compress inactive app memory as memory capacity approaches its limits (Apple’s memory-usage explanation).

Check memory use in GNOME Linux

  1. Open System Monitor and select Resources to inspect system memory (RAM), as described in the GNOME Help guide (GNOME Help: Checking memory usage).
  2. If memory is nearly full and the computer is slow, close programs you do not need. GNOME explains that the system may use disk space as swap memory, which is much slower than RAM; its guidance notes that memory use close to 100% can slow things down substantially.
  3. If the computer becomes too slow to use normally, restart it. These interface steps apply to GNOME; other Linux desktop environments and distributions may use different tools and labels.

Know when memory use is actually a problem

There is no universal percentage or per-app number that proves a program is using too much memory. A large amount in use can be normal for the operating system and workload. Treat it as a likely issue when it coincides with real symptoms—such as slow app switching or long delays—and signs that the system has little headroom or is relying on swap.

What you are looking at What it tells you How to use it
One app or process Memory attributed to that running app or process Compare it with system-wide use and symptoms; a large number alone does not establish a fault.
Whole-system use or pressure How much memory capacity is available to the system and whether it is meeting workload needs On Mac, use Memory Pressure with the other Activity Monitor figures; on Windows, check Performance > Memory.
Cached or compressed memory (Mac) Memory macOS uses to improve efficiency, including cached files and compressed inactive app memory Do not assume these figures are wasted or should be manually purged.
Swap Memory-management activity involving disk storage when RAM capacity is under pressure Consider it alongside ongoing sluggishness; disk-based swap is slower than RAM.
Committed memory (Windows technical counter) Committed memory includes RAM plus the page file; a process Working Set is the RAM it is using at a point in time Do not treat committed memory and Working Set as the same measurement. Microsoft’s detailed counter guidance is intended for technical Windows Server troubleshooting (Microsoft: Troubleshoot Performance Monitor counter issues).

What to do if memory use keeps coming back

  1. Note the app name and the system’s overall memory state before closing anything.
  2. Close one known, unneeded app and see whether responsiveness improves. Repeat only as needed.
  3. If the same app’s memory use rises again quickly, note what you were doing, then update the app or seek help from its publisher.
  4. If no single app explains the slowdown, check other causes too. Microsoft lists storage, startup activity, outdated software, and hardware limitations among factors that can affect Windows performance (Microsoft’s performance guidance).

For advanced Windows diagnosis, Microsoft’s Server troubleshooting guide compares process Working Set with available system memory. Its thresholds and procedures address technical troubleshooting, not a universal consumer cutoff for deciding an app uses too much memory.

Should you add more RAM?

Consider an upgrade only if your usual workload repeatedly creates memory pressure or performance problems after unnecessary apps and startup activity have been addressed. Apple provides an Activity Monitor procedure for assessing whether a Mac could use more RAM (Apple: Determine if your Mac needs more RAM). That does not mean every Mac is upgradeable: check the exact model’s specifications and upgrade options. For a PC, verify compatibility with the computer maker; Microsoft notes that older hardware can limit the gains from software-based measures (Microsoft’s Windows performance tips).
