How to Speed Up a Slow PC With Free Software and Settings Changes

Use Task Manager to find likely causes of a slow Windows PC, then try targeted free fixes for storage, startup apps, updates, malware, and power settings.

A slow Windows PC can be caused by low storage, busy apps, too many startup programs, outdated software, malware, or aging hardware. Start by checking what is using resources, then try the free Windows fixes that match what you find. None is guaranteed to help every computer, and software changes cannot remove a hardware bottleneck.

1. Find out what is slowing the PC

Before changing settings, check whether the slowdown is tied to a particular app or resource. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. In Processes, review CPU, memory, and disk use; in Performance, look for sustained high activity. Select Startup apps to see which programs launch with Windows.

  • Close applications you recognize and are not using, then see whether performance improves.
  • If an unfamiliar process persistently uses resources, identify it before ending it. The name alone is not enough to establish that it is safe to stop.
  • If the slowdown is mainly during startup, focus on startup apps. If disk space is nearly full, start with storage cleanup.

Microsoft’s Windows performance guidance identifies limited storage, startup and background apps, outdated software, malware, and hardware limitations as possible causes.

2. Install Windows updates and scan for malware

Windows updates can include fixes and optional driver updates. Open Settings > Windows Update, check for updates, and install available updates. Optional updates may include drivers; review what Windows offers rather than installing drivers from an unrelated updater utility.

Malware can consume CPU and disk resources. Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection and run a scan. If a threat is found, follow Windows Security’s instructions. A scan is a useful check, not a guarantee that every cause of sluggishness is malware.

3. Free up storage without deleting files blindly

Check available space in File Explorer or open Settings > System > Storage. A nearly full system drive can affect performance and make it harder to install updates. Windows 11 may show Cleanup recommendations under Storage; review the proposed categories before removing anything.

Use Storage Sense carefully

Storage Sense can remove temporary files and, depending on your choices, items in the Recycle Bin. It works on the system drive, usually C:. Its defaults do not clean the Downloads folder or cloud files unless you configure it to do so. Check the cleanup settings and categories first, especially if you store personal files in folders Windows offers to clean. See Microsoft’s guide to managing drive space with Storage Sense.

Review Disk Cleanup selections

Microsoft’s free-up-space guide also covers Disk Cleanup, which can remove temporary and system files. Read the description for each category before selecting it. If Previous Windows installation(s) appears after an upgrade, deleting it can remove the option to return to the previous Windows version.

If your system drive is short on space, moving large personal files to another location may help free it. An external storage drive is one option; it is a way to move files, not a guaranteed performance upgrade.

4. Stop unnecessary apps from launching at startup

Startup apps can slow both sign-in and overall performance. In Windows 11 or Windows 10, open Settings > Apps > Startup, or use Task Manager > Startup apps. Disable only apps you recognize and do not need to launch automatically. Keep security software and drivers enabled, and do not disable an item just because its name is unfamiliar. Microsoft explains these controls in its startup applications guide.

5. Remove unused apps and close idle work

Uninstall programs you no longer use through Settings > Apps. This can reclaim storage; removing an app that is actively consuming resources may also reduce demand. Close browser tabs and applications you do not need. If the PC remains sluggish after closing work, restart Windows and check performance again.

6. Trade visual effects or battery life for responsiveness

Reduce visual effects

Windows includes an option to Adjust for best performance in its visual-effects settings. This reduces interface effects and may make Windows look less polished. It is worth considering if responsiveness matters more to you than animation and visual detail.

Try Best performance power mode when plugged in

Open Settings > System > Power & battery in Windows 11, or Settings > System > Power & sleep in Windows 10, and look for the power-mode control. The available choices can vary by device. Microsoft says Best performance prioritizes performance but uses more power; on a laptop, it can drain the battery faster and make the device warmer. Try it when plugged in if performance is more important than battery life. Details are in Microsoft’s power-mode guide.

7. Run Windows’ drive optimization tool

Search Windows for Defragment and Optimize Drives, select the drive, and choose Optimize if the tool indicates it is appropriate. Windows includes drive optimization among its performance suggestions, but the available guidance does not establish a specific speed gain for every drive or PC. Treat it as routine maintenance, not a promised fix.

When free settings changes are not enough

After trying relevant steps, revisit Task Manager and check whether the same resource remains consistently busy. If storage is adequate, startup activity is under control, software is updated, and no malware is found, the PC’s hardware may be the limiting factor. Microsoft cautions that older PCs with outdated hardware may not see significant improvement from these steps.

There is also an important support distinction: Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. After that date, Windows 10 no longer receives free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes. Check Microsoft’s Windows performance page for the support note and current guidance.
