A browser-in-the-browser (BitB) scam places a fake login window inside a webpage and styles it to look like a separate browser window. Its address bar, lock icon, and controls are part of the page, so they do not prove that the login is on the real service. Before entering a password, check the address bar of the outer browser tab—and if the login was unexpected, leave the page and navigate to the service independently.
What a browser-in-the-browser scam looks like
The page draws a browser-like panel around a login form. It may imitate a familiar title bar, close or minimize buttons, a lock symbol, and a well-known service’s web address. But the panel is webpage content, not necessarily a separate browser window. The address shown inside it can be text or an image chosen by the page creator.

Mimecast described a June 24, 2026 campaign that used a convincing fake desktop window while the actual page and embedded content pointed to attacker infrastructure. A 2025 work-in-progress research paper likewise describes an HTML element that mimics a popup and explains why its fake URL bar makes the displayed domain unreliable: Mimecast’s campaign report and the 2025 paper.
How to check a login before typing
- Ignore the address printed inside the imitation. It may be fabricated by the webpage and cannot authenticate the login form.
- Look at the outer browser tab’s actual address bar. This is the browser’s address for the page you are visiting, outside the simulated window. Google’s guidance for deceptive sites recommends checking the URL and HTTPS, but HTTPS alone does not show that a page belongs to the account provider. For BitB, be especially careful not to mistake the panel’s displayed URL for the browser’s real one: Google’s guidance.
- If the login is unexpected, stop and navigate independently. Close the suspicious page, then use a bookmark you already trust or type the service’s known address yourself. Do not follow the page’s link or rely on the imitation’s address display.
- Notice whether your password manager offers the saved login. Password-manager autofill checks the actual URL rather than the fake popup’s displayed address. If the expected login is not offered, pause and verify the site independently. That absence is a warning signal, not conclusive proof of a scam: Kaspersky’s guidance on fake login windows.
Why visual and behavior clues are not enough
Odd movement or interaction with the underlying browser can be a clue, but it is not a dependable test. Kaspersky identifies unusual window behavior as a warning sign, while Sophos notes that malicious scripts can simulate some popup behaviors. A panel that looks or behaves plausibly can still be fake: Kaspersky’s warning signs and Sophos commentary.

Likewise, familiar browser styling, a lock symbol, or HTTPS should not settle the question on its own. The reliable distinction is between the page’s imitation and the address shown by the outer browser; when anything about the flow is unexpected, verify by navigating to the service independently.

Enable two-factor authentication on the account if it is available; an authenticator-generated code is one option described in the cited guidance. Treat it as an added account-protection measure, not a way to verify a login window or a guarantee against every phishing outcome: Kaspersky’s account-protection guidance.
