Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A slow build can be caused by the build system, dependency downloads, or a laptop resource limit—not necessarily an underpowered computer. First measure where time goes, then change one thing at a time and compare the same build. The Gradle examples below apply only to Gradle projects; other build systems need their own profiling and configuration tools.
Measure the build before changing settings
Choose a representative project and task. Record total elapsed time and, where your build tools provide it, time spent configuring the build, running tasks, compiling, testing, and resolving dependencies. Keep the project, task, power state, and workload broadly consistent between runs. Change one setting per experiment so you can tell whether it helped.

Builds may behave differently on a cold run and a warm run: caches may be empty at first and reusable later. Record which kind of run you are comparing rather than treating one result as universal. Gradle recommends examining a Build Scan or profile report before optimizing, and notes that cache results depend on build configuration, cache state, and network behavior. See Gradle’s performance guide and Build cache performance guidance.
Find which part of the build is slow
Use the build tool’s profile, timeline, or task report to identify the stage consuming time. During the same build, observe CPU, memory pressure, disk activity, and network activity using your operating system’s monitoring tools. Interpret these signals together: a high reading alone does not establish the bottleneck. Microsoft’s guidance on metric relationships is written for Azure Linux virtual machines, so use its general diagnostic principle rather than transplanting its infrastructure-specific commands to a laptop: Linux performance bottleneck guidance.
#1 Best Overall
- Ultra-Portable: Slim, portable, and light weight allowing you to protect your investment wherever you go
- Ergonomic Comfort: Doubles as an ergonomic stand with two adjustable height settings
- Optimized for Laptop Carrying: The metal mesh provides your laptop with a stable laptop carrying surface
- Ultra-Quiet Fans: Three ultra-quiet fans create a noise-free environment for you
- Extra Usb Ports: Extra USB port and power switch design allows for connecting more USB devices. Warm Tips: The packaged cable is USB to USB connection. Type C connection devices need to prepare an Type C to USB adapter
- Configuration dominates: inspect build logic and plugin compatibility with configuration caching. Expensive setup can affect invocations even when little task work is requested.
- Compilation or other tasks dominate: check whether work is incremental and whether outputs can be reused. A cache cannot help tasks whose inputs differ or which are not cacheable.
- Dependency resolution dominates: investigate repository access and download delays before changing CPU or memory settings.
- CPU, memory, or disk appears constrained: close competing workloads and repeat the build. Rising memory pressure or persistent saturation is a reason to investigate that resource, not proof by itself that an upgrade will help.
Gradle settings to test
Gradle’s official performance documentation currently identifies itself as version 9.8.0. Match instructions to the Gradle version your project uses; behavior and compatibility can vary by version. Gradle’s guide describes configuration, task execution, caching, and parallelism as separate parts of performance. It notes that “The longer a build takes, the more it disrupts your development flow.” Read the Gradle performance guide.
Keep the Gradle daemon enabled
The daemon keeps Gradle loaded between builds and can avoid repeated JVM startup work while retaining runtime optimizations. It is enabled by default in current Gradle releases, but user or project configuration can disable it. Check the project’s Gradle properties and your user-level Gradle configuration if a new process appears to start for every invocation. Details: Gradle Daemon.

Distinguish the build cache from the configuration cache
The build cache stores outputs from eligible tasks so Gradle can reuse them when matching inputs are encountered. The configuration cache stores configuration results so Gradle may skip configuration when its inputs have not changed. They target different work; enabling one does not substitute for the other. Both depend on the project’s behavior and compatibility, and cache setup or network costs can offset gains. Test relevant cold and warm runs and compare elapsed time before keeping a change. See Build cache performance and Configuration Cache.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteUse parallelism only when the work can run independently
Gradle can run eligible work across projects in parallel. This may reduce elapsed time when subprojects have independent tasks, but dependency relationships can serialize work and a single dominant task may limit the benefit. Parallel execution also increases resource demand; shared mutable state can cause instability. Test build correctness as well as time, and watch memory and CPU while comparing runs. Avoid assuming that more workers or parallel tests are always faster.

Tune memory and tests from evidence
Gradle provides heap and test-execution controls, but there is no universal heap size or worker count that fits every laptop and test suite. Large or memory-intensive suites can spend time in garbage collection or compete for memory when run concurrently. Change memory or test parallelism only when measurements point to that issue, then check both elapsed time and test correctness.
Check the laptop before buying upgrades
If monitoring points to memory pressure, first close other demanding applications and repeat the build. If the limitation remains, verify the exact laptop model’s specifications, supported memory type and capacity, and whether its memory is replaceable. Some laptops have soldered memory or no supported upgrade path. Microsoft identifies processor and memory performance as Windows resource factors and lists additional or faster RAM as possible interventions for physical devices, but that does not establish that a particular build is memory-bound. Consider a laptop RAM upgrade only after confirming a memory bottleneck and model compatibility. Check the manufacturer’s documentation for the exact model before choosing a kit; capacity limits and replaceability differ. Dell and HP provide model-oriented slow-PC troubleshooting and diagnostics, but neither establishes that every laptop can be upgraded: Dell slow-computer troubleshooting and HP PC performance guidance.
Investigate heat during sustained builds
A processor doing sustained work generates heat, and inadequate airflow can contribute to slow performance. If the laptop becomes hot or slows after a period of building, check that vents are unobstructed and consult model-specific diagnostics rather than assuming a software setting is responsible. Microsoft describes workload-related heat in its thermal management design guidance; Dell also lists airflow among possible performance factors in its troubleshooting guidance.

Keep or revert changes based on the comparison
For each experiment, compare the same task and workload, note whether it was a cold or warm run, and check that the build still produces correct results. Keep a change only when it improves the stage you are trying to address without creating reliability or resource problems. A software cache, parallel execution setting, or hardware purchase is not a universal speed fix; the profile and repeatable comparison determine whether it fits your project and machine.
