To connect a drone’s electronic speed controllers (ESCs) to a power distribution board (PDB), match each ESC’s positive and ground power leads to the pads identified in that exact PDB’s diagram, then connect its control lead to the assigned flight-controller motor output. Check the hardware ratings, inspect every joint while unpowered, and follow the component manuals for first power-up. Pad positions, wire colors, control-pin layouts, and capacitor requirements are not universal.
Identify and check your exact hardware
Before soldering, identify the ESC, PDB, flight controller, and battery. Find the wiring diagrams or manuals for each model and use the board’s printed labels as a cross-check. Do not copy a pad layout from another PDB: DJI’s E2000 example uses outer ground pads and inner positive pads, but that is specific to the example board.

Confirm that the PDB is suitable for the battery voltage, the number of ESCs, and the installation’s current demand. DJI specifically advises considering trace spacing and current capacity in relation to ESC count and battery voltage. Also confirm that every ESC supports the battery’s voltage. If the board or ESC documentation does not establish compatibility, do not connect the battery until you have resolved it.
Check how the system routes power. A simple PDB, a board with a power module, and an integrated ESC/PDB can have different power and flight-controller connections. For example, Holybro documents its PM07 as distributing power and signals for up to eight ESCs and supplying compatible flight controllers with regulated 5.2 V. Its manual also says the PM07 does not power servos through the FMU PWM-OUT plus/minus pins; the ADC rail’s 5 V comes from the flight controller’s CAP&ADC port. Those details apply to the PM07, not to PDBs generally. See Holybro’s PM07 documentation.

Gather tools and prepare the work
DJI lists an electric soldering iron and solder among the tools for connecting ESCs to a PDB. Choose a suitable iron tip and technique for the pad size, wire gauge, and board’s thermal mass; the manuals cited here do not establish one temperature or wattage for every build. Keep the relevant wiring diagrams visible while working.
Dry-fit the ESCs and PDB first. Route each power lead so it reaches its pad without tension, stays clear of adjacent pads and moving parts, and does not bunch up around the solder points. DJI advises trimming wires to length and avoiding excess cable near the joints. APD recommends flexible, high-temperature silicone-insulated power wire for its ESCs and mechanical relief against vibration and crash forces; its wire guidance is specific to its products and applications, not a universal FPV wire-gauge specification. See APD’s F-Series manual.

Solder the ESC power leads to the PDB
- Confirm each pad. Use the PDB’s diagram and labels to identify positive and ground for the ESC connection. Do not assume that positive and ground occupy the same positions as on a different board.
- Prepare the joint. Tin the wire and pad as appropriate for your board and soldering technique. DRONA recommends tinning both surfaces before joining them; a finished joint should be shiny and slightly domed rather than dull and blobby. See DRONA’s soldering guide.
- Join matching conductors. Connect the ESC’s positive power lead to the PDB’s positive pad and its ground lead to the PDB’s ground pad. In DJI’s E2000 manual, the power leads are red VCC and black GND. NXP’s archived S500 assembly example likewise shows red connected to positive and black to negative on that board. These examples do not make wire colors or pad locations universal.
- Keep adjacent pads separate. Avoid solder bridges and stray strands that could connect neighboring pads. After each joint cools, check that the lead is secure and that solder has not spread where it should not.
If the ESC setup uses a capacitor, follow that ESC’s instructions for its voltage rating, polarity, and placement. APD requires the included input capacitor for its documented setup to be installed with correct polarity. Its F-Series manual calls for additional capacitance when the ESC is more than 12 cm from the power source and gives further advice for certain higher-current applications. These are APD-specific instructions, not a general rule for every ESC and PDB.

Connect the ESC control leads to the flight controller
Connect each ESC’s documented signal lead to the flight-controller output assigned to the corresponding motor. Connect signal ground as specified by both devices’ documentation. In APD’s general PWM example, signal and ground are the minimum connections; for harness-based installations, APD calls for common ground and recommends signal-ground wires for signal integrity.

Do not infer the pinout from wire color alone. ESCs may also have power, telemetry, or firmware pins, and whether these should be connected depends on the exact ESC and flight controller. DJI’s E2000 signal-wire colors differ from other ESC examples, underscoring why the device manuals and pin labels take precedence over color conventions.
Inspect and test the wiring before connecting a battery
Keep the system unpowered while checking the work. Compare every power lead with the PDB labels and look for reversed polarity, solder bridges, stray wire strands, cold or weak joints, and loose metal. DJI warns against open and short circuits; APD calls out cold joints and correct input polarity, while DRONA advises checking for bridges, battery polarity, and loose metal.

A multimeter continuity check can help identify an unintended connection or an open circuit, but a continuity beep alone does not prove that the assembly is safe or correctly wired. If you find a possible short, uncertain polarity, or a joint that moves, correct it and inspect again before applying power.

Power up cautiously and check motor direction
Follow the first-power procedure in the exact ESC and PDB manuals. APD recommends a smoke stopper or its specified low-voltage, current-limited procedure for its F-Series ESCs to reduce the risk of damage from wiring errors. APD also cautions against using a supply that cannot absorb regenerative current with its ESC. Do not transfer that bench-supply procedure to other hardware unless its manufacturer permits it. A smoke stopper is a precaution, not a guarantee against damage.

Remove all propellers before configuration or motor testing; DRONA specifies a props-off first power-up. Once the system is powered safely, check motor order and rotation using the flight-controller and ESC instructions. DJI’s documented E2000 setup reverses direction by swapping any two motor phase wires. Other ESC firmware may offer a configuration method, so use the method documented for your model.
