AFFiNE can bring documents, visual planning, and connected research into one workspace, and one writer reports using it to consolidate much of their work across Notion, Miro, and Obsidian. That is a personal account, not proof that AFFiNE replaces all three for every workflow: it suited drafts, lightweight project tracking, diagrams, and active research, while the established apps retained advantages in more demanding use cases.
What AFFiNE brings together
AFFiNE’s official site describes it as “a workspace with fully merged docs, whiteboards and databases.” The practical distinction is that a page can also be used as a canvas: the author reports moving document blocks onto an open visual space, arranging them, then returning to page mode without copying the material into a separate document. That shared model is the core of its appeal for someone tired of moving between separate apps.

Notion: documents and lightweight project tracking
The reported workflow includes formatted text, Markdown-style input, images, code blocks, embeds, databases, collections, and page properties. That can cover everyday writing and relatively simple project organization in one workspace. The author says Notion exports, HTML, and Markdown can be imported, but complex Notion databases may need manual cleanup; an import should not be assumed to preserve every database structure or behavior.

Miro: solo visual planning
In Edgeless mode, the author used AFFiNE to map projects, connect ideas, and rearrange research. For solo brainstorming, diagrams, mind maps, and project planning, the canvas was sufficient for that writer. Miro was still described as more polished for elaborate workshops and large collaborative boards, so replacing it is less compelling when facilitation and extensive group collaboration are central.
Obsidian: research connected to active projects
The author connected research to ongoing work with linked pages, block references, collections, and workspace search. That is a useful fit when notes belong alongside documents and project boards. Obsidian retains distinct strengths for people who prioritize plain-text files, a mature plugin ecosystem, a customizable graph, or established community workflows.

What does not transfer as well
The account also reports occasional lag and bugs, weaker export options, limited integrations, database capabilities that fall short of established alternatives, and performance problems with large canvases and databases. These are reported observations, not benchmark results, and the account does not establish how often they occur or which versions were involved.
That makes the trade-off practical rather than absolute: AFFiNE can reduce context switching when your work is mostly writing, lightweight tracking, visual thinking, and project-focused research. A workflow built around complex databases, extensive automation or integrations, big collaborative workshops, or a heavily customized plain-text vault has stronger reasons to keep its specialized tools.

Plan a migration around the work you actually do
- Inventory your current setup. Separate everyday documents and simple project lists from complex Notion databases, collaborative Miro workshops, and Obsidian notes that depend on plugins or plain-text files. This shows which parts are likely to transfer cleanly and which need a fallback.
- Try one representative project. Bring in a small set of documents and active research, then build a lightweight dashboard and canvas around them. Check whether the page-to-canvas workflow is useful for your work rather than migrating everything based on the feature list.
- Import selectively and inspect. The author reports importing Notion exports, HTML, and Markdown. Review database properties and relationships after import, especially for complex Notion setups, and verify that the material you need is present before relying on the new workspace.
- Keep a portability route for research. If your Obsidian archive depends on plain-text files, plugins, or community workflows, test those needs independently before moving it. The reported account does not establish that AFFiNE preserves an Obsidian vault’s full structure or plugin behavior.
- Stress-test the canvas and collaboration. Use a realistic board and, if relevant, a real group session. Large canvases and databases were among the reported rough edges, while Miro was considered stronger for elaborate workshops.
Cost, licensing, and deployment claims
AFFiNE says it is free for individuals and that fees apply to commercial and team use. Its site says most of the code is MIT licensed and identifies the backend as AFFiNE EE; this does not mean the entire product, including its backend, is MIT licensed. Check the current official details for the applicable usage terms and deployment requirements rather than assuming a particular price or license scope. AFFiNE official site
The vendor also lists local-first use, optional sync, and self-hosting. Those descriptions may matter if you want more control over where your workspace runs, but they do not by themselves establish specific security guarantees or explain the setup needed for a particular deployment.
