There is no evidence-backed percentage that is right for every speculative space stock. A more useful approach is to decide how much portfolio loss you could tolerate under a clearly defined downside scenario, calculate the position size that would produce that loss, and then check your other exposures, liquidity needs, and the company’s execution risks. This is a planning framework, not personalized investment advice.
Start with the exposure you already have
Measure the proposed investment against your whole portfolio, not just the cash you plan to use for the purchase. A large position can amplify losses, and concentration can build up in a single company, a sector, or a broader market segment. FINRA recommends considering the portfolio as a whole, reviewing it periodically, and rebalancing when needed (FINRA’s concentration-risk guidance).

- Include direct shares you already own in the same company.
- Check ETF and mutual-fund holdings for indirect exposure to the same company or space theme.
- Consider other high-volatility investments that could fall at the same time, even if they are not space companies.
Fund holdings can overlap with direct positions or with one another, so a fund’s label alone may not tell you how much exposure you have. FINRA advises investors to look through fund holdings and account for overlap.
Set a downside scenario before choosing a position
Choose a hypothetical adverse outcome and a dollar loss that would be tolerable in light of your goals and ability to absorb losses. The reviewed guidance does not prescribe that limit, and no universal position-size percentage is established.

For a simple illustration, suppose an investor has a $100,000 portfolio and decides that a hypothetical 50% decline in one position would mean no more than a $1,000 loss. The arithmetic implies a $2,000 position: $1,000 ÷ 0.50. That is 2% of the portfolio. These figures illustrate the calculation only; they are not a recommended allocation, a forecast, or a claim that a 50% decline is the likeliest outcome.
- Write down the portfolio value you are using.
- Choose a hypothetical decline, including a complete loss if that is a scenario you want to test.
- Choose the maximum dollar loss you could tolerate in that scenario.
- Divide the tolerated loss by the assumed decline to estimate a position value, then divide that value by the portfolio value to express it as a percentage.
- Check whether the resulting position still fits after adding your existing direct and fund exposure.
The calculation depends on your assumptions. A smaller tolerated loss or a more severe assumed decline produces a smaller position. It cannot predict the stock’s path or ensure that losses will stay within the amount you selected.

Account for the risks a space company can face
Space-related businesses can be exposed to launch failure, deployment malfunction, mission delay, and cost overruns. A January 2026 SEC-filed space fund prospectus describes these types of risks and warns that they can contribute to rapid, substantial declines in related securities. The filing is a fund disclosure, not a company-by-company comparison or a finding that every space stock has the same risk profile (SEC EDGAR filing).

Check volatility, liquidity, and your time horizon
Volatility describes the size and frequency of price fluctuations. Beta compares a stock’s volatility with the broader market; neither measure tells you how much of your own portfolio to invest. FINRA’s investor education pages explain stock volatility and beta and investment risk.
Liquidity is also relevant: an investment that is difficult to sell quickly or efficiently may be a poor match for money you could need soon. Consider whether you could hold through a sharp decline or a period when selling is difficult, rather than assuming you can exit at a preferred price.

Be cautious about making short-term trades in volatile stocks promoted on social media. The SEC’s Investor.gov alert warns of significant risks in short-term stock investing based on social-media promotion (SEC Investor Alert).
Review the position as circumstances change
A position’s weight can rise if its price increases, or shrink if it falls; your finances and goals can change too. Revisit the assumptions behind your sizing decision periodically and check whether the total exposure still fits. FINRA recommends periodic portfolio review and rebalancing, including attention to concentration and overlapping fund holdings.
This framework does not rank public space companies or identify an appropriate allocation for a particular investor. Comparing individual companies would require company-specific work on business maturity, financing needs and dilution risk, execution dependencies, milestones, volatility, liquidity, and portfolio overlap.
