There is no checklist that can certify a presale token as safe or guarantee that you will be able to sell it. You can, however, verify the token’s identity, examine what its contract allows, test audit and liquidity claims, and decide whether the remaining risks are acceptable. A presale allocation is not proof of an active market or a reliable exit.
Start by verifying the token’s identity
Get the blockchain network and contract address from the project’s published sale materials. Then confirm that the address matches the token shown by the relevant block explorer and, if one exists, the trading venue. A familiar token name or ticker is not enough: different tokens can use similar names, and a token’s address is the more reliable identifier.

The SEC’s Investor Bulletin advises prospective buyers to ask whether the blockchain is open and public, whether the code has been published, and whether an independent cybersecurity audit has been conducted. Guidance for Korean investors summarized by the Korea Development Institute likewise emphasizes confirming a coin by its contract address. Treat any mismatch between the project’s materials, explorer, and venue as unresolved until you can establish which address is correct.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCheck what the deployed contract can do
On the explorer for the stated chain, inspect the deployed contract and its verified source code, if available. A source-code page lets you review what the published contract says; it does not by itself establish that the project is trustworthy or that the code has no harmful behavior. If the source is not published, you cannot independently inspect it through that source view.

Look for powers that could materially affect ownership or resale:
- Supply changes: Can an owner or administrator mint more tokens or otherwise change supply?
- Transfer controls: Can an account pause transfers, blacklist addresses, or restrict who can buy or sell?
- Fees and trading rules: Can privileged accounts change transfer fees or taxes, or apply different conditions to buying and selling?
- Upgradeability: Can an administrator replace the implementation or change contract behavior after launch?
- Administrative control: Which accounts hold these privileges, and is the control held by one address or shared through a disclosed arrangement?
These are review questions, not claims that any particular presale token has such controls. If the contract is upgradeable or has privileged roles, identify who controls them and what limits—if any—apply. A third-party badge or scanner result should not be treated as a substitute for understanding the deployed code and its controls; no scanner is established here as detecting every risk.
Match the audit to the live contract
An audit is evidence about specified work, not a general safety certificate. Check the report’s author, publication date, scope, exclusions, findings, and any documented fixes. Most importantly, compare the contract address and version covered by the report with the contract deployed on-chain. A report for a different address or earlier version does not establish that the live contract received the same review.

Record whether issues remain open and whether claimed fixes were reviewed. An audit that found no critical issue within its stated scope does not establish business honesty, sufficient liquidity, future value, or a guaranteed ability to sell. The SEC recommends asking whether an independent cybersecurity audit exists; ESMA’s disclosure framework for asset-referenced tokens calls for audit outcomes to be disclosed when an audit was conducted.
Assess whether liquidity could support an exit
Find the actual trading pool associated with the correct token address, then inspect the assets and amount available in that pool. Consider whether its depth could accommodate the sale you might realistically need to make without unacceptable price impact. A displayed token price is not necessarily the price at which a substantial sale could execute when liquidity is thin.
Also identify who controls the liquidity-provider position and verify any claimed lock on-chain: check the relevant lock contract, unlock time, and beneficiary rather than relying on a promotional screenshot. A lock can constrain a particular withdrawal path for a period. It does not prove durable buyer demand, adequate market depth, or a dependable exit. Regulators identify liquidity as a risk, and a 2026 Korean regulatory notice specifically warns about DEX liquidity shortages and volatile prices. The available guidance does not establish a universal pool-depth threshold that makes a token safe to sell.

Read the sale and resale terms before paying
Save the sale terms and compare them with the white paper and other official project materials. Establish the amount being raised, sale dates and phases, payment method, token allocation, delivery schedule, and conditions for a refund. Check the token’s rights, transfer restrictions, expected trading venue, and who is responsible for any promised liquidity arrangement. Clarify whether a listing or trading date is a commitment or only a plan.
ESMA’s MiCA disclosure items for asset-referenced tokens cover offer phases, payment and delivery information, refunds in relevant circumstances, trading access, token rights, transfer restrictions, liquidity arrangements, and technology risks. That framework concerns that token category; it does not mean every presale is covered by MiCA or that a particular sale complies with it.

| Dimension | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Code and control | Whether source code is visible, which administrative powers exist, and who controls them. |
| Audit and remediation | Whether the report matches the deployed address and version, what it excluded, and whether findings were fixed and reviewed. |
| Liquidity and control | Whether the correct pool exists, its available depth, who controls the liquidity-provider position, and the verified duration of any lock. |
| Sale and resale terms | Delivery timing, refund conditions, transfer limits, trading access, and responsibility for liquidity commitments. |
| Identity and concentration | Whether the project identifies its operating entity, team, and advisers, and what the disclosed token allocation shows about concentration. |
| Jurisdiction and recourse | Which jurisdiction and legal framework may apply, and what recourse is actually described for a dispute, loss, or failed delivery. |
Follow a review sequence before connecting a wallet
- Collect the project’s claims. Save the sale terms and note the operating entity, named team and advisers, chain, contract address, allocation, sale dates, delivery mechanics, refund terms, and any listing or liquidity commitments.
- Cross-check identity and documents. Compare the address and chain across the project’s materials, explorer, audit, and trading venue. Resolve differences before proceeding.
- Inspect the explorer and audit. Review published code and administrative controls, then match the audit’s scope and version to the deployed contract.
- Verify the pool and any lock. Confirm that the pool uses the correct token, assess its available assets against a plausible sale, and check the liquidity-provider position and lock details on-chain.
- Decide what remains uncertain. If material claims cannot be verified—such as contract identity, delivery terms, control of liquidity, or the audit’s relevance—do not treat them as established facts.
Check the transaction before signing
At the point of payment or approval, recheck the chain, token address, recipient, and amount shown by the wallet. Understand what an approval authorizes and review existing approvals using a reputable wallet or chain tool. Never share a seed phrase or private key. Korean regulator guidance summarized by KDI recommends managing wallet approvals and checking transaction details; SEC materials also warn that theft can occur and recovery may be limited.
Watch for pressure and promises that substitute for evidence
The SEC warns investors about guaranteed high returns, unsolicited offers, urgency, and claims of outsized returns. The CFTC advises buyers to investigate project affiliations, use of funds, token rights, liquidity, and the limits of recovery. Claims such as “audited,” “liquidity locked,” or “listing soon” are prompts to verify the underlying report, on-chain position, or trading commitment—not conclusions about safety.
“Buying digital coins or tokens only because you expect to sell them at a higher price later is the definition of speculation and carries considerable risk, regardless of how good a white paper, application or business plan sounds.”
— CFTC customer advisory
What this review can and cannot establish
A token-specific assessment requires the chain, contract address, current deployed code, audit report, pool address, and sale terms. Without those items, a general checklist cannot deliver a verdict on a particular presale. Legal classification and rights depend on the facts and jurisdiction; fraud or theft may leave limited recovery options. Use this process as a risk review, not as legal or financial advice, a guarantee of safety, or a prediction of price.
