The safest setup is to silence or screen unknown senders rather than block numbers wholesale. On iPhone, save every number you must reach—family, schools, doctors, employers and service providers—in Contacts. Then use Settings > Apps > Phone to choose whether unsaved callers are screened or sent to voicemail, and use Messages’ Screen Unknown Senders filter to remove alerts from unfamiliar texts without deleting them. You can review the separate Unknown Callers, Spam and filtered-message folders later, mark a legitimate sender as known, or add that number to Contacts.
The exact labels and available spam-identification options can differ by iOS release, carrier and country. Use the wording currently displayed on your iPhone; the Apple instructions linked below cover the current interfaces.

Silencing is different from blocking
Silencing changes how your iPhone alerts you. A silenced call can still reach voicemail and remain available in a review list; a filtered message can remain readable in another folder. Blocking targets a particular number or contact and prevents that sender from contacting you through the blocked channel. Apple’s Messages documentation also notes that blocking can affect communication in other Apple apps, so it is a stronger action than simply reducing interruptions.

Prepare your Contacts before changing call settings
Unknown-caller controls use your Contacts list to decide what is familiar. Before enabling Silence or call screening, add the numbers you genuinely need to answer.
- Immediate family and close friends
- Children’s schools, carers and activity organisers
- Doctors, hospitals, pharmacies and other medical services
- Employers, recruiters and important clients
- Landlords, utilities, banks and government offices you are expecting
- Travel providers, hotels or repair services for an active booking
Include alternate numbers when an organisation uses a switchboard, appointment desk or after-hours line. If a legitimate caller uses a new number later, you can add it to Contacts after reviewing the missed call or voicemail.
Do this before a high-stakes waiting period
If you are waiting for a hospital, interview, delivery or school call, ask which number or numbers will be used and save them first. A company name in Contacts does not automatically identify every number used by that company. Saving the actual switchboard, department or callback number gives the unknown-caller controls the information they need.

Choose how unknown calls behave
On current iPhone software, open Settings > Apps > Phone and look for the unknown-caller setting. Apple presents three choices: Never, Ask Reason for Calling and Silence. Some versions may show related controls under Phone’s call-filtering section, so follow the label on your device.
What each option does
| Phone setting | Interruption level | What happens to an unsaved caller | How you review it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Never | Full ringing | The call behaves normally. You decide whether to answer. | Use the regular Recents list, voicemail and caller-ID information. |
| Ask Reason for Calling | Screened before ringing | The caller is asked to identify the reason for calling before your iPhone rings. You can decide whether to answer after hearing that information. | Review the screened call and any voicemail in Phone. |
| Silence | Lowest interruption | Calls from numbers that are not in Contacts are sent to voicemail instead of ringing. They remain available for later review. | Check the Phone app’s Unknown Callers and voicemail areas. |
Saved contacts continue to be identifiable, which is why completing your Contacts list first is important. Neither screening nor silencing is a promise that every unwanted call will be detected. A number can be misidentified, and an unsaved legitimate caller can still be routed away from the ringtone.
When Ask Reason for Calling is the better compromise
Choose Ask Reason for Calling if you receive important calls from new numbers but still want a barrier against robocalls. The caller’s response gives you context without requiring you to maintain a perfect list of contacts. Apple says call screening can use standard calling and data services; normal carrier or data charges may apply. Screening does not operate while roaming, and placing an emergency call disables call screening for 24 hours.
When Silence is appropriate
Silence is useful when interruptions are the main problem and voicemail is an acceptable fallback. It is particularly practical during work, sleep or periods when you can check messages on your own schedule. Tell frequent callers to leave a voicemail or send a follow-up message so you have a way to recognise an unsaved number.

A quick choice guide
- Use Never when missing a ring is unacceptable and you can tolerate deciding which calls to answer.
- Use Ask Reason for Calling when you need context from new callers but still want screening before the phone rings.
- Use Silence when interruption reduction is the priority and you reliably check voicemail and Unknown Callers.
You can change the choice temporarily. For example, use Silence overnight, then switch to Ask Reason for Calling during a day when an unfamiliar clinic or recruiter may call. If you change it, remember to restore your preferred setting afterward.
Use carrier spam identification when it is available
Some iPhones and carriers expose a spam or fraud-call control in Phone settings. When supported, carrier-identified calls can be silenced, sent to voicemail and placed in the Phone app’s Spam list. Availability depends on your carrier, country and account features; it is not a universal iPhone function.
Turn this option on only after checking what your carrier calls it. It supplements, rather than replaces, the unknown-caller choice. A carrier’s classification can be wrong, so inspect the Spam list periodically if you are waiting for an important call.
Review calls so legitimate callers are not lost
Silencing is safe only if you build a review habit. Open the Phone app and inspect the Unknown Callers list and, when offered by your carrier, the Spam list. Check voicemail for a name, organisation, callback number and reason for calling. If the caller is legitimate, add the number to Contacts; future calls will then be treated as known.
Do not call back solely because a caller-ID name looks familiar. Use the voicemail details or an independently verified number for sensitive matters such as banking, account recovery or medical information.
A simple review routine
- Check voicemail and Unknown Callers at a predictable time, such as after work or after school pickup.
- Look at the Spam list as well when carrier identification is enabled.
- For each call, compare the voicemail’s organisation and reason with something you are actually expecting.
- Save a verified number to Contacts, or leave it unsaved if you are not confident about the caller.
- Return urgent calls using an official number you already trust, rather than relying only on caller ID.
This routine preserves the interruption benefit of Silence without treating the filter as an inbox you can ignore indefinitely.
Filter spam texts without hiding important messages
Messages has a separate workflow for unknown senders. Open Messages, open the filter menu, choose Manage Filtering, and turn on Screen Unknown Senders. On some releases the filter menu is labelled differently, but the setting performs the same job.

What Screen Unknown Senders changes
- Messages from people you have not identified are moved out of the main conversation list into other folders.
- Those messages do not notify you by default, reducing lock-screen and sound interruptions.
- You can open the filtered area at any time, read a message and mark the sender as known or add the number to Contacts.
- Apple allows notifications for some categories of unknown senders, including time-sensitive messages such as verification codes, where that option is supported in your region.
Filtering does not delete a message. It changes where the message appears and whether it generates an alert. Review the folder when you are expecting a code, appointment update or delivery notice from a number you have not saved.

Transactions and Promotions folders
For SMS, MMS and RCS, Apple also describes optional Transactions and Promotions folders. These categories depend on carrier and country support. If your iPhone offers them, they provide additional organisation for receipts, order notices and marketing messages without mixing them into personal conversations.
A limitation when you have already replied
Apple says text filtering does not apply to senders you have replied to three or more times. A conversation that has become active may therefore continue to appear and notify like a known exchange. If a once-legitimate thread turns into unwanted marketing, use the conversation’s reporting and blocking controls rather than assuming the unknown-sender filter will keep handling it.
Check filtered messages before requesting a code
When signing in, paying a bill or confirming an appointment, open the filtered area if the expected text does not appear in the main list. A one-time code may come from a number you have never saved. If your region offers notifications for time-sensitive unknown messages, enable that category, but still verify the sender and the context before using a code.
Mark a legitimate unknown sender as known
- Open Messages and the filter menu.
- Enter the folder where unknown messages are stored.
- Open the conversation and verify the sender using the message context, voicemail or an independently confirmed contact detail.
- Use the available option to mark the sender as known, or choose to add the number to Contacts.
- For an organisation with several departments, save the exact number that sent the message; adding only the company name may not identify future numbers.
Once a sender is known, future messages should return to the normal conversation view, subject to the filtering rules on your iOS version and carrier.
Report spam versus block a sender
Reporting and blocking solve different problems. In Messages, open an unknown conversation and use Apple’s Report Spam option when you want to flag the content. For iMessage, the sender information is sent to Apple. For SMS, MMS and RCS, reporting may share information with your carrier and its affiliates, depending on the carrier and your country or region. Apple explicitly says reporting does not stop the sender from sending additional messages.
To prevent messages from that particular number, use Block Contact or the equivalent block command in the conversation. Reserve blocking for a sender you have identified as unwanted, because it is more restrictive and may affect communication through other Apple apps.

Apple’s step-by-step guidance for these controls is available in Report spam and block senders in Messages on iPhone.
Which action should you take?
| Goal | Best first action | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|
| Reduce interruptions from unfamiliar texts | Screen Unknown Senders | It does not permanently stop the sender. |
| Flag a suspicious message | Report Spam | Reporting alone does not prevent more messages. |
| Stop one identified sender | Block Contact | Blocking is broader and can affect other Apple apps. |
| Keep a new legitimate sender visible | Mark as known or add to Contacts | You must verify the sender first. |
A practical setup for common situations
You want almost no interruptions
- Add must-reach numbers to Contacts.
- Set Phone’s unknown-caller behavior to Silence.
- Enable Screen Unknown Senders in Messages.
- Check Unknown Callers, voicemail and filtered messages at a set time each day.
- Add verified new callers to Contacts so they can ring normally next time.
You are waiting for calls from new organisations
- Keep unknown calls on Ask Reason for Calling rather than Silence.
- Ask the organisation which number it will use, and save that number before the appointment or interview.
- Check voicemail promptly if a screened call does not reach you in real time.
- Temporarily choose Never if the organisation cannot provide a reliable callback number and the call is time-critical.
You receive many promotional texts but need security codes
- Enable Screen Unknown Senders.
- Allow notifications for time-sensitive categories if that option appears in your regional settings.
- Review the filtered folder whenever you request a login or payment code.
- Mark a verified service as known after confirming its identity.
Fix an important call that went straight to voicemail
If a call you expected never rang, Apple recommends checking several independent causes rather than immediately disabling every filter. Work through this list:
- Contacts: Confirm the caller’s exact number, including an alternate office or switchboard number, is saved.
- Screen Unknown Callers and Call Filtering: Revisit Settings > Apps > Phone and inspect the unknown-caller and filtering choices. Temporarily select Never if you need to test whether filtering caused the missed ring.
- Focus: Open Control Center and check whether a Focus mode is active or configured to allow only selected people.
- Blocked Contacts: In Phone settings, open the blocked-contacts list and remove the number if it was blocked accidentally.
- Silent mode and volume: Check the Ring/Silent control, Action button behavior where applicable, ringtone volume and connected audio devices.
- Software: Install any available iOS update, then restart the iPhone and ask the caller to try again.
Apple’s troubleshooting page, updated July 14, 2026, covers calls that go directly to voicemail and additional checks: If calls don’t ring and go straight to voicemail on your iPhone.
Carrier, region and iOS-version limitations
Spam labels, call-identification services, report-sharing behavior and the Transactions and Promotions folders are not identical everywhere. A carrier may require its own service, and a feature shown in Apple’s Canadian or US documentation may not appear on your device. Do not infer that a missing menu means the iPhone is faulty; first check your carrier’s support information and the country selected for your account.
Apple’s current call instructions are in Manage unknown callers on iPhone. The iOS 26 text-filtering guide is at Screen and filter text messages on iPhone. Interfaces can change with software updates, so search Settings for “unknown callers,” “call filtering” or “unknown senders” if the path is not identical to the one shown here.
Privacy and safety checks before responding
- Read voicemail and message content before returning a call; do not trust caller-ID alone.
- Never disclose one-time passcodes, passwords or full payment details to an unsolicited caller or texter.
- For a supposed bank, delivery company or government office, open its official app or type its known website address yourself to find a verified contact number.
- Report suspicious messages when appropriate, but remember that reporting alone does not stop future messages.
- Block only after you are confident the number is unwanted and you no longer need communication through Apple services.
With Contacts kept current, unknown calls screened or silenced, and filtered messages reviewed on a schedule, you can reduce spam interruptions without turning an important new caller into a blocked one.

Will Silence block an important caller?
No. Silence sends calls from numbers that are not in Contacts to voicemail instead of ringing. The call remains in Phone for review. Save important numbers first, then check Unknown Callers and voicemail regularly so a legitimate unsaved caller is not overlooked.
Best Value
What is the difference between Ask Reason for Calling and Silence?
Ask Reason for Calling screens an unsaved caller and asks for a reason before your iPhone rings. Silence skips the ring and sends the call to voicemail. Choose screening when new callers may be important; choose Silence when reducing interruptions matters more than answering immediately.
Can filtered Messages hide a verification code?
The message is moved to another folder rather than deleted. Review filtered messages when you request a code. Apple also allows notifications for some time-sensitive unknown-sender categories where supported by your region.
Does reporting a spam text stop future messages?
No. Apple says reporting shares sender information with Apple for iMessage and may share it with the carrier for SMS, MMS or RCS, depending on location. Reporting flags the message; blocking is the action that prevents that particular number from continuing through the blocked channel.

What if a sender I already answered keeps appearing in my main list?
Apple says text filtering does not apply to senders you have replied to three or more times. If the conversation has become unwanted, use reporting and, after confirming the sender is not needed, the block control.
Does call screening work while roaming?
Apple says call screening does not operate while roaming. It also turns off for 24 hours after you place an emergency call. Standard calling and data charges may apply when screening is used.
The Bottom Line
Save essential numbers, use Ask Reason for Calling or Silence for unknown calls, and enable Screen Unknown Senders for texts. Review voicemail, Unknown Callers, Spam and filtered-message folders on a routine. Mark verified senders known; report suspicious texts, and block only numbers you are certain you want to stop.
