Use claude mcp list or the panel to verify the connection. For SSH or a machine without a browser, the CLI can provide an authorization URL to open elsewhere.
Configure the remote MCP server
Use the endpoint and transport specified by the service. For a remote HTTP server, the command pattern is:

Replace sentry with a name you will use to identify the configured server, and use the endpoint supplied by your MCP service.
Choose an authentication method

Both methods use OAuth for supported remote servers. Anthropic’s guide says authentication tokens are stored securely and refreshed automatically.

Sign in from Claude Code
- Start Claude Code and enter
/mcp. - Select the server that needs authentication.
- Follow the browser sign-in and authorization steps shown for that server.
Start OAuth from a terminal
- Run
claude mcp login <name>, substituting the configured server name. For the example above, useclaude mcp login sentry. - Complete the authorization flow presented by Claude Code.
Sign in over SSH or without a local browser
If Claude Code detects that no local browser is available, claude mcp login <name> prints an authorization URL. Open it on a device with a browser, complete authorization, then paste the complete redirect URL from the browser’s address bar into the terminal prompt. The paste step requires an interactive terminal; when connecting over SSH, allocate one with ssh -t. You can also force the URL-based flow on a machine that has a browser with --no-browser.

- Run
claude mcp listto review configured servers and their status. - Run
claude mcp get <name>for a particular server, or reopen/mcp. - Documented statuses include
Connected,Needs authentication, andFailed to connect. - To remove stored credentials, run
claude mcp logout <name>. Clearing authentication from the/mcpmenu is another documented option.
When a server needs registered OAuth credentials
Some providers do not support dynamic client registration and require you to create OAuth credentials in their developer portal. Claude Code’s guide documents configuring a client ID and secret, and optionally a fixed callback port when the provider requires a pre-registered redirect URI. The credentials and redirect URI configured in Claude Code must match the provider’s registration.

Check your installed Claude Code version and the provider’s registered callback only if you encounter an exact redirect URI mismatch. Anthropic’s guide documents a specific issue: Claude Code v2.1.229 sent a callback using 127.0.0.1 that could be rejected by servers requiring an exact registered URI; the guide says v2.1.231 restored the localhost form.
Troubleshoot authentication failures
The server still says it needs authentication
Check its status with claude mcp list, claude mcp get <name>, or /mcp. Anthropic’s guide says a remote server may be marked as requiring authentication after returning 401 Unauthorized or 403 Forbidden. Reopen the authentication flow and check that authorization completed for the intended server.

A configured authorization header is rejected
If a configured Authorization header is rejected, Claude Code reports a connection failure rather than switching to OAuth automatically. Verify that the token is valid for that endpoint, or remove the header if the server is meant to use OAuth.
A callback URL is rejected
Compare the callback URI configured with the provider against Claude Code’s OAuth registration settings. If the failure matches the documented version-specific issue, check whether the installed version is v2.1.229 or v2.1.231 and use a callback form that matches the provider’s exact registration.

Verify the server before authorizing it
Only connect to an MCP server whose operator you trust and whose access you understand. Anthropic warns that servers retrieving external content can expose users to prompt-injection risk. The guidance appears in its Claude Code MCP documentation.
