To show your hard drive on the Mac desktop, open Finder settings, go to General, and tick Hard disks under “Show these items on the desktop.” The hard-disk icon then appears on the desktop. This is a Finder display preference, so it controls what is shown, not whether the drive is working.
Turn on the desktop hard-disk icon
- Click the Finder icon in the Dock to make Finder the active app.
- From the menu bar, choose Finder > Settings. Older macOS releases label this menu Finder > Preferences; Apple’s current guide uses Settings.
- Click General.
- Under Show these items on the desktop, select Hard disks.
- Close the Settings window. The hard-disk icon should now be visible on the desktop.
Apple’s “See the devices connected to your Mac” guide describes this exact behaviour: selecting Hard disks makes the icons for your hard disks appear on the desktop.

Show the same disk in the Finder sidebar
Desktop icons and sidebar entries are set separately. If you also want connected disks listed in the Finder sidebar, open Finder > Settings, click Sidebar, and select the items you want under the locations list. You can also drag a disk into the Favorites section of the sidebar, which keeps it there as a shortcut.
What the setting does and does not do
The desktop option covers hardware that macOS already recognises. Apple’s connected-device guide lists hard disks, external disks, CDs, DVDs, iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and connected servers as items Finder can show on the desktop or in the sidebar.

The checkbox does not repair anything. If a drive is unplugged, not mounted, or failing, enabling Hard disks will not bring it back. In that case, check these in order:
- Connection: confirm the cable, port, and power for an external drive, and try a different port or cable.
- Visibility in Finder: if the drive appears under Locations in the sidebar but not on the desktop, the desktop checkbox is the cause. If it appears in neither place, the problem is upstream of Finder preferences.
- Disk Utility: open Disk Utility from Applications > Utilities to see whether the drive is listed and mounted. Treat any reported errors as a sign to back up the data before attempting repairs.
- Managed Macs: on a work- or school-managed Mac, device-management policies can hide internal and external storage icons. The setting may be locked, and only your administrator can change it.
If the drive still does not appear after these checks, the cause is outside the desktop setting and needs diagnosis for your specific device and symptoms.

Names readers search for
Readers usually ask this in one of three ways: how to show a hard drive on the Mac desktop, why the Macintosh HD icon disappeared, or how to show hard disks on the desktop. All three are answered by the same Finder setting.
Apple’s documentation for these steps is the Finder settings and connected-device guides on Apple Support. The menu wording can vary slightly between macOS releases, so match the labels you see on your screen to the steps above.

Your internal startup disk and external drives are handled by the same option. You do not need new hardware, a cable, or repair software to show an existing hard-disk icon.

Go to Finder > Settings > General and tick Hard disks under “Show these items on the desktop.” If the icon still does not appear, the disk is likely disconnected, unmounted, or blocked by a managed-Mac policy, and the checkbox will not fix that.
