You can display your DEV.to follower count in a GitHub profile README by using a GitHub Actions workflow to run a Node.js script that updates a marked section of the README. The example from DEV Community author Anna Villarreal runs daily and can also be started manually. It is a personal implementation, not a guarantee that the endpoint or pagination settings remain current.
How the automatic count works
The profile README is a file in the special repository GitHub uses to customize your profile. In the example, a GitHub Actions workflow runs a Node.js script; the script requests DEV follower records, counts them, then replaces the text between two markers in README.md. If the file changes, the workflow commits and pushes the update.

Villarreal’s example workflow, named “Update DEV.to Followers Count,” uses Node.js 22, runs at midnight UTC each day, and also supports a manual workflow_dispatch run. Its job grants contents: write so it can push the README change. The author describes the setup as working for them, but it has not been independently verified.
Set up the README display
Put the markers where you want the count to appear. The script updates only the text between them:

Save the API key as a GitHub Actions secret, then expose it to the script as an environment variable. Do not hard-code the key in the script or print it in workflow logs.

Choose the run pattern: the example schedules a run daily at 00:00 UTC and supports manual dispatch for an on-demand refresh. In GitHub Actions, open the workflow and use Run workflow when you want to trigger that manual run.

Run the workflow and inspect its logs and the resulting commit. Confirm it found the markers, retrieved data, and changed only the intended README text before relying on scheduled updates.

What to verify about the DEV API
The example requests /api/followers/users in pages of 1,000, adds the number of records returned, and stops when a page contains fewer than 1,000 records. Those are settings from the author’s implementation, not an established current API contract. Before deploying, check the current DEV Community article and its code alongside current official DEV API documentation for endpoint availability, authentication requirements, pagination limits, and rate limits. Do not assume the sample key requirement or page size is still valid.

Choose between scheduled and manual updates

A plain-text count is the simplest profile display and uses little space. The source example does not compare other profile designs or provide an alternative implementation; any extra badges or custom presentation would need their own setup.

A profile README is a customizable part of a GitHub profile. GitHub says follower and following counts are hidden when a profile is private, so consider your profile visibility if the goal is to show follower information. See GitHub’s profile documentation for profile README and privacy details.
