To show upcoming events on a WordPress page or homepage, use an events plugin’s block or shortcode. If your events are stored in The Events Calendar, install The Events Calendar Shortcode & Block and add its block or [ecs-list-events] shortcode. If you want to display events from an external calendar on WordPress.com, an iCalendar feed may work with its legacy Upcoming Events widget on classic themes.

Before choosing, identify whether your site is WordPress.com or self-hosted, whether it uses a classic or block theme, and whether the events already exist in a plugin or external calendar. Plugin features, plan entitlements, and compatibility vary, so confirm them for your installation.

Show an event list with The Events Calendar Shortcode & Block
This extension requires The Events Calendar as the event source. Its WordPress.org listing documents both a block and the [ecs-list-events] shortcode for pages, posts, and widget areas.

- Install and activate The Events Calendar, then install and activate The Events Calendar Shortcode & Block.
- Open the page, post, or supported widget area where the list should appear.
- Insert the extension’s block, or add a shortcode block and enter
[ecs-list-events]. - Adjust the options to suit the listing, then preview and publish the page.
Examples documented in the plugin listing:
[ecs-list-events]displays a list using the shortcode’s default settings.[ecs-list-events cat="festival" limit="8"]filters for thefestivalcategory and limits the results to eight.
The listing documents options including category, result count, order, and event details. Its examples also include a days setting for a future date window. Calendar design is identified as a Pro feature. Check the current plugin listing for the full option set and tier availability before relying on a particular setting.

Filter for future events with another extension
Events Shortcodes For The Events Calendar offers a shortcode that explicitly sets the time filter to future events. Its listing says it can place events created with The Events Calendar on pages, posts, and widget areas.

The parameters select all categories, a template and style, up to ten results, ascending order, and future events. Verify the current shortcode syntax and compatibility on the extension’s listing. Its listing says The Events Calendar’s free plugin does not include built-in shortcodes for placing events in regular pages or posts; confirm current behavior for your installed version rather than treating that statement as universal.
Display an external calendar on WordPress.com
If your events come from an iCalendar feed, WordPress.com documents an Upcoming Events widget and shortcode that use the feed to show a list. The support page describes this as a legacy widget for classic themes. For block themes, WordPress.com points users to Eventbrite or Google Calendar embeds, or to plugins where the site’s plan allows plugin installation.

The Events Calendar documentation describes a [tribe_events] shortcode for embedding calendar views, including different views in different site locations. Its knowledge base also describes a maximum-event-count setting for its widget and shortcode-based embedding. These instructions may depend on product version or site setup; consult the calendar-view shortcode documentation and event-count guidance before applying them.

Check the result and troubleshoot
- No events appear: Confirm that events exist in the selected source and that any category or future-date filters include them.
- The shortcode prints as text: Add it through a shortcode block or a supported shortcode-enabled area, rather than a regular paragraph or an incompatible widget area.
- The widget or embed is unavailable: Check whether your theme is classic or block-based and whether your WordPress.com plan allows the required plugin. For a block theme, consider the embed alternatives WordPress.com documents.
- Calendar layout or options are missing: Check the extension’s current feature and edition details; the Shortcode & Block listing identifies calendar design as a Pro feature.
- A documented setting behaves differently: Compare the instructions with your installed plugin version and current vendor documentation, since compatibility and feature availability can change.
