How to Show Different Sidebars on Posts and Pages in WordPress

Use conditional PHP in classic themes, template parts in block themes, or a sidebar plugin for granular assignments. This guide covers setup, fallbacks, and fixes for blank or misplaced WordPress sidebars.

To show one sidebar on blog posts and another on Pages, first identify your theme type. In a classic theme, register separate widget areas and choose between them with is_single() and is_page(). In a block theme, create separate template parts and insert the appropriate part in the post and Page templates. If editors need rules for individual posts, categories, archives, or custom post types without editing code, use a conditional-sidebar plugin.

What a WordPress sidebar actually is

A sidebar is not a special page type or a universal WordPress panel. It is a widgetized area that the active theme registers and places in its templates. In a classic theme, PHP templates call a registered widget area and the Widgets screen supplies its content. In a block theme, the equivalent layout is built with blocks in the Site Editor, usually as a reusable Template Part.

That distinction determines the correct solution. Adding PHP to a block theme will not automatically create a sidebar that appears in the Site Editor, and looking for Appearance → Widgets in a block theme can send you in the wrong direction. Before changing anything, check the theme architecture and the templates that currently render the layout.

Check which theme system you use

  • Classic theme: Appearance → Widgets is available, and the theme normally contains PHP files such as single.php, page.php, sidebar.php, or a template hierarchy with similar files.
  • Block theme: Appearance → Editor opens the Site Editor, and the post, Page, and sidebar layouts are assembled from block templates and template parts.
  • Custom or hybrid theme: Some themes combine both systems or replace the standard layout. Inspect the active theme before assuming that either set of instructions applies.

Choose the right implementation

Approach Best fit How you control the sidebar Code level Important dependency
Classic PHP templates Developers maintaining a classic theme Conditional logic and separate template files or widget-area IDs PHP The theme must register and load sidebars
Block-theme template parts Sites managed in the Site Editor Different parts assigned to post and Page templates Block markup; advanced dynamic selection may need theme code The active theme must use block templates
Conditional-sidebar plugin Editors who need per-content rules Post, Page, taxonomy, archive, search, and other conditions No custom PHP for ordinary setup Plugin and theme compatibility

Use the simplest method that matches the requirement. A fixed post-versus-Page split is easiest to maintain in theme templates. Per-item assignments, such as a unique sidebar for one landing Page, are usually faster for editors with a plugin. A block site should keep its layout in block templates unless there is a specific reason to introduce PHP.

Classic themes: build separate widget areas

Do this work in a child theme or a controlled custom theme. Editing a parent theme directly can be overwritten by an update. Back up the site and test the change on staging before deploying it.

1. Register a post sidebar and a Page sidebar

Add the following to the active child theme’s functions.php, or to the theme code location used for initialization:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
add_action( 'widgets_init', function () {
    register_sidebar([
        'name' => 'Post Sidebar',
        'id'   => 'post-sidebar',
    ]);
    register_sidebar([
        'name' => 'Page Sidebar',
        'id'   => 'page-sidebar',
    ]);
});

The human-readable name is what an administrator sees when assigning widgets. The stable id is what template code uses. Keep the IDs lowercase and consistent; a mismatch between the registered ID and the ID passed to dynamic_sidebar() produces an empty result.

2. Assign widgets to each area

Open Appearance → Widgets and add the desired blocks or widgets to Post Sidebar and Page Sidebar. For example, the post area might contain a category list, recent posts, and an email sign-up block, while the Page area could contain navigation for a service section and contact details. The content is independent because each area has its own ID.

3. Select a sidebar with conditional tags

In the template that controls the layout, use the main query’s context to select a file:

if ( is_single() ) {
    get_sidebar( 'post' );
} elseif ( is_page() ) {
    get_sidebar( 'page' );
} else {
    get_sidebar();
}

is_single() matches an individual post request, while is_page() matches an individual WordPress Page request. The final branch is important: archives, search results, feeds, 404 responses, and other requests are not covered by the first two tests. It preserves the theme’s default sidebar instead of leaving those views without a layout.

4. Create the specialized sidebar files

The get_sidebar( 'post' ) call looks for sidebar-post.php; the Page call looks for sidebar-page.php. Each file can render the corresponding registered area:

<?php
if ( is_active_sidebar( 'post-sidebar' ) ) {
    dynamic_sidebar( 'post-sidebar' );
}
?>
<?php
if ( is_active_sidebar( 'page-sidebar' ) ) {
    dynamic_sidebar( 'page-sidebar' );
}
?>

Keep the surrounding markup consistent with the theme’s existing sidebar, including its wrapper element, heading classes, and accessibility attributes. If the theme expects a particular structure, copy that structure from its original sidebar.php rather than inventing a different layout.

5. Switch widget areas without separate files

You can keep one template and choose the registered area directly:

<?php
if ( is_single() ) {
    dynamic_sidebar( 'post-sidebar' );
} elseif ( is_page() ) {
    dynamic_sidebar( 'page-sidebar' );
} else {
    dynamic_sidebar( 'default-sidebar' );
}
?>

dynamic_sidebar() accepts a registered sidebar name or ID. The fallback ID must also be registered and populated, or the uncovered views will still be blank. This one-file approach is useful when the theme already has a single sidebar wrapper and you only need to change its contents.

6. Put the conditional in the right execution point

Conditional tags depend on the current query. They should run in a template or at a later execution point after the main query is available. Do not place an is_page() or is_single() test at the top level of functions.php and expect it to describe every request; outside the correct lifecycle, it can return false even on a Page or post.

Also avoid testing the condition inside a secondary custom loop and assuming that loop represents the main request. A plugin or theme that alters the main query can change what the conditional tags see. Keep the sidebar decision in the main template context, or pass an explicit context to your own rendering function.

Block themes: use template parts and templates

Block themes do not expose traditional widget areas in the same way as classic themes. Their layout is edited in the Site Editor, and reusable pieces are stored as template parts. For a post/Page split, create one part for posts and another for Pages, then place each part in the matching template.

1. Create two sidebar template parts

In Appearance → Editor, open the template-part or pattern management area used by your WordPress version and create parts named clearly, such as “Post Sidebar” and “Page Sidebar.” Add blocks to each part and save them. A theme-controlled equivalent stores the files in the theme’s /parts directory, for example:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
parts/sidebar-posts.html
parts/sidebar-pages.html

The part can contain a Group block, navigation, Categories, Latest Posts, search, or any other blocks appropriate to that context. Give the outer group a useful CSS class if the theme’s stylesheet needs to distinguish the layouts.

2. Insert the post part in the post template

Open the single-post template in the Site Editor and add a Template Part block where the sidebar should appear. The underlying block markup is:

<!-- wp:template-part {"slug":"sidebar-posts"} /-->

Save the template, then repeat the operation for the Page template with the Page part:

<!-- wp:template-part {"slug":"sidebar-pages"} /-->

The slug must match the part’s file or registered template-part slug. A spelling difference can make the block fail to load the intended content.

3. Account for templates that bypass the split

A block theme may have specialized templates for a particular post type, a full-width Page, an archive, or a landing Page. Check those templates individually. If a full-width template intentionally omits a sidebar, adding a part to the general Page template will not change that specialized view.

4. Use dynamic selection only when static assignment is insufficient

Static template assignment handles the normal post-versus-Page requirement without PHP. A more advanced block theme can dynamically load different template parts according to the current request; WordPress developer guidance published in 2026 describes this pattern. It is appropriate when one template must choose among many contextual parts, but it introduces theme code and therefore needs the same testing and maintenance discipline as a classic PHP customization.

Use a conditional-sidebar plugin when rules are editorial

A plugin is useful when the people assigning sidebars are editors rather than developers, or when the rule is more specific than “all posts” versus “all Pages.” Install and maintain it like any other production plugin: verify compatibility with the active theme, test on staging, and review whether it is actively maintained before relying on it for a critical navigation or conversion path.

Content Aware Sidebars

Content Aware Sidebars documents conditions for posts, Pages, custom post types, categories, tags, taxonomies, templates, archives, search results, and 404 pages. Its assignment model can replace an existing theme sidebar, merge additional content into it, or hide the original area. This makes it suitable for rules such as “use this sidebar on every post in the Tutorials category” or “replace the default sidebar only on the pricing Page.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Custom Sidebars

Custom Sidebars documents custom widget configurations for individual posts and Pages, categories, post types, and archive pages. It is a practical choice when editors want to build several widget sets and assign them from the dashboard rather than editing template files.

A safe plugin setup sequence

  1. Record the theme’s current sidebar names and take a backup.
  2. Install the plugin on a staging copy and create one test sidebar.
  3. Assign the narrowest rule first, such as one test Page or post.
  4. Check the front end while logged out, on desktop and mobile widths.
  5. Confirm that archives, search, 404 pages, and other unmatched requests still have an intentional fallback.
  6. Only then expand the rule to categories, post types, or broader templates.

Plugin listings describe capabilities, not guaranteed behavior for every theme. A theme that hard-codes a full-width layout, renders multiple widget areas, or replaces the standard sidebar hooks may require a theme-specific integration or may not support replacement cleanly.

Common assignment patterns

All posts versus all Pages

Use the classic conditional branch or the separate block templates described above. This is the lowest-maintenance pattern because the rule follows WordPress’s primary content types and does not require a list of individual IDs.

One Page needs a unique sidebar

Use a conditional-sidebar plugin for a dashboard-managed assignment, or add a narrowly scoped condition in theme code if developers own the site. Keep a general Page sidebar as the fallback so new Pages do not inherit an empty area.

Different sidebars by category or taxonomy

Category, tag, and taxonomy conditions are more granular than is_single(). A plugin can expose those rules to editors. In custom code, make sure the condition is evaluated in the main request context and that the fallback handles posts outside the selected taxonomy.

Custom post types

A custom post type may have its own single template and archive template. Add the relevant template-part or conditional branch there instead of assuming that single.php controls it. If the requirement is managed by editors, use a rule that explicitly targets the post type and test both its single view and archive.

Archives, search, and 404 pages

These requests are neither an individual post nor an individual Page. Keep a default sidebar registered and rendered, or deliberately use a full-width layout. Leaving the fallback undefined is a common cause of blank columns and inconsistent navigation.

Troubleshoot a missing or incorrect sidebar

Symptom Likely cause What to check
Appearance → Widgets is missing The site uses a block theme Open Appearance → Editor and inspect templates and template parts.
The sidebar column is blank No widgets are assigned, the area was not registered, or the ID does not match Confirm registration, assignment, and the exact ID passed to dynamic_sidebar().
Both posts and Pages show the same sidebar The template never reaches the conditional branch, or both contexts call the default area Inspect the active template and verify which file or block template renders the layout.
is_page() or is_single() always returns false The check runs before the main query or inside an improperly altered loop Move it into the template or a later execution point and test the main request.
A custom Page remains full width A specialized template overrides the general Page template Find the assigned Page template in the Site Editor or theme template hierarchy.
A plugin assignment has no visible effect The theme does not expose a compatible sidebar hook or the rule is too broad or narrow Test one URL, inspect the theme’s rendering path, and verify plugin compatibility.

Inspect the theme before adding code

A theme may omit a sidebar entirely, use a custom layout, or render a widget area under an unexpected name. Search the active theme for register_sidebar, dynamic_sidebar, get_sidebar, and the template files assigned to the affected URL. This tells you whether you should extend an existing area or create a new one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verify the rendered request, not just the editor

Test a published post, a published Page, a category or other archive, a search result, and a 404 URL. Check logged-in and logged-out views because visibility rules, caching, and personalized widgets can differ. Clear page and object caches after changing assignments so an older sidebar is not mistaken for a code failure.

Quality and maintenance checklist

  • Use a child theme or a version-controlled custom theme for PHP changes.
  • Give each sidebar a descriptive name and a stable, unique ID.
  • Keep a populated fallback for requests outside the post/Page branches.
  • Match the theme’s wrapper markup and heading hierarchy so the new area remains accessible and styled.
  • Do not place conditional tags before the main query is available.
  • Test specialized templates, custom post types, archives, search, and 404 pages.
  • Check mobile layout, keyboard navigation, contrast, and whether a long sidebar pushes important content too far down the page.
  • Document which template or plugin rule owns each sidebar so a future editor can change it safely.
  • After theme or plugin updates, retest both the assignment logic and the visual layout.

Which method should you use?

Choose classic PHP when the requirement is stable and a developer maintains the theme. Choose block template parts when the site already uses the Site Editor and editors should control layout with blocks. Choose a conditional-sidebar plugin when assignments vary by individual content, taxonomy, archive, or other editorial conditions and the team needs to manage them without code.

In every case, the reliable pattern is the same: create or identify distinct sidebar containers, assign content to each one, select the correct container for the current request, and preserve an intentional fallback for everything else.
