For an eligible YouTube Live stream, enable Closed captions in the stream settings, choose Automatic captions, set the video language to English, and use normal latency. This feature is not available to every channel or every stream, and YouTube does not specifically document how it behaves on a continuous loop of prerecorded lectures. Test your actual stream before relying on captions.
Choose a caption method for the stream
YouTube offers two broad approaches: its automatic live captions, or captions supplied through compatible caption data or software. Automatic captions are simpler to configure, but YouTube documents them as English-only and subject to channel availability and stream conditions. A supplied caption feed takes additional setup and must be compatible with YouTube’s workflow.

YouTube’s live-caption guidance covers live streams generally, not every configuration of an always-on prerecorded lecture loop. Neither method should be assumed to work identically in every 24/7 setup.

Turn on YouTube automatic live captions
- In YouTube, open Create → Go live, then choose Stream.
- Open the stream settings and turn on Closed captions.
- Choose Automatic captions as the caption source.
- Set the video language to English.
- Use normal latency. YouTube says automatic live captions are available only at normal latency.
- Start the stream and check from a viewer’s perspective that captions appear and remain synchronized with the lecture.
If Automatic captions is missing, your channel may not yet have access: YouTube says availability is rolling out gradually. The option is not a guarantee that a particular continuous prerecorded stream will be captioned.

Supply professional captions to the live stream
If automatic captions are unavailable, unsuitable, or not the workflow you need, YouTube documents embedded caption data and supported caption software that sends captions through HTTP POST.
Embed EIA 608/CEA 708 captions
- In the stream’s closed-caption settings, select Embedded 608/708.
- Configure the encoder to include EIA 608/CEA 708 caption data in the video stream.
- Test the broadcast and confirm captions appear correctly for viewers.
Use a caption software feed
- Configure closed captions for the YouTube stream and copy the signed captions ingestion URL.
- Give that URL to the captioner or supported caption software so it can send captions to YouTube.
- Allow for the broadcast delay YouTube recommends for event captioning: 30 or 60 seconds.
- Check the live output. YouTube says each stream entry point can have one caption feed.
YouTube names Total Eclipse, Case CATalyst, CaptionMaker, and StreamText.Net in its live-caption documentation. Its documentation describes StreamText.Net as cloud-based caption delivery software compatible with speech-to-text platforms. Check directly with any provider for current availability, requirements, and language support.

Check captions during the loop and on the recording
Live captions and the captions on the later video-on-demand (VOD) recording are separate. YouTube says automatic live captions disappear when the stream ends; it generates new captions through the VOD process, and those may differ from the live captions.

- Watch the actual 24/7 stream and verify that captions appear during playback, including after the loop returns to its beginning.
- After YouTube processes the recording, inspect its captions separately rather than assuming the live text was saved.
- Review errors and correct the VOD captions where needed. YouTube warns that automatic speech recognition can make mistakes.
Troubleshoot missing or inaccurate captions
