On iPhone models with Face ID, the number then appears inside the battery icon at the top of the screen. If you only want to check the level once, you can swipe down from the top-right corner to open Control Center without changing the status bar.
Turn on the battery percentage in the status bar
Apple’s official iPhone guide gives the task in its own words: “Go to the Settings app on your iPhone. Tap Battery, then turn on Battery Percentage.” Apple’s iPhone User Guide covers this setting for current iOS releases.

- Open the Settings app.
- Tap Battery.
- Turn on Battery Percentage.
Apple Support says this status-bar toggle is available on iOS 16 and later. If your menu does not show the toggle, check your iOS version under Settings > General > About (the software version is listed there) and update if needed. Apple’s support article on displaying the battery percentage on iPhone or iPad is the reference for model-specific behaviour.
Check the percentage without changing the status bar
If you prefer the status bar to stay as it is, you can read the level on demand. On iPhone X and later models with Face ID, swipe down from the top-right corner of the screen to open Control Center; the battery level appears there. This is useful when you want a quick reading and do not need the number visible all the time.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Models that always show the percentage
Apple Support states that the percentage is always visible in the status bar on iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation) and on iPhone 8 or earlier. On those models you will not find a setting to hide it, so the Battery Percentage toggle does not change what you see. Your reading depends on the model, not on the toggle.
Use the Batteries widget for a glanceable view
Apple’s current guide also describes a Batteries widget that you can add to the Home Screen or Lock Screen. It shows the battery level of your iPhone and connected accessories, including AirPods and other paired devices. Apple Support also lists the Home Screen and Today View as places a widget can sit. The widget is most useful if you want to watch accessory levels at a glance; for a simple iPhone percentage, the status-bar setting is the faster route.

Choosing the right method
| Method | Where you see the percentage | Steps | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Battery Percentage toggle | Status bar, always visible | Settings > Battery > turn on Battery Percentage | Constant monitoring; iOS 16 and later |
| Control Center | Control Center panel | Swipe down from the top-right corner (Face ID models) | A one-time check without changing the status bar |
| Batteries widget | Home Screen or Lock Screen widget | Add the Batteries widget from the widget editor | Checking connected accessories such as AirPods |
If the percentage is not appearing after you turn on the toggle, confirm that your iOS version is 16 or later and that you are on a Face ID model or another supported model listed above. On a supported Face ID iPhone that meets both conditions, the number should appear inside the battery icon in the status bar.
