How to Show a Background Image When FFmpeg Switches Videos on YouTube Live

Put the still image in FFmpeg’s base layer, loop it, and switch only the video layer. Learn the trade-offs between concatenating a fixed playlist and building a dynamic switching graph, then check YouTube ingest and preview settings.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the background image as the base layer of the FFmpeg composition, then place the active video over it. Loop the still-image input so it continues providing frames. For a fixed sequence of compatible clips, concatenate the clips while keeping the background in the composition; for operator-controlled switching, retain the background and change only the active video source.

Build the composition with the image underneath

FFmpeg’s overlay filter takes a main video as its first input and layers its second input over it. For an opaque background image behind a clip, arrange the inputs accordingly: image first, video second. The conceptual graph is [background][current-video]overlay[composite].

The still must keep supplying frames while the composition runs. FFmpeg’s image2 demuxer has a looping option for image input. Check the option’s spelling and placement using the documentation or help for your installed FFmpeg build; exact command syntax can vary with input type and version.

Choose how to fit the video

Make the image and clip fit the same output canvas. FFmpeg’s scale and pad filters let you resize a clip and add bars where needed; overlay options control where it appears. Choose deliberately:

  • Scale to fill: fills the canvas but may crop part of the picture.
  • Preserve the full frame: scale the clip to fit and use the background to fill the remaining space.
  • Use the image as a frame or backdrop: size the video smaller than the canvas and position it where the design requires.

Use the treatment that keeps important text and subjects visible. If clips have different aspect ratios or dimensions, plan for those differences rather than assuming one overlay placement will suit every clip.

Decide what happens when a clip ends

FFmpeg overlay framesync options control what happens when an input reaches end-of-file. By default, the secondary input repeats its last frame. The documented eof_action options include pass, which passes the main input through, and endall, which ends both streams. If the clip is the overlaid input, choose whether its final frame should remain, the background should show through, or the whole output should stop. Avoid a shortest setting that ends the composite because the still-image input supplied only a short initial duration. See the FFmpeg filter documentation for the relevant framesync behavior and options.

Fixed playlist: concatenate compatible clips

For a known sequence that should play one clip after another, the concat demuxer reads files sequentially as though their packets had been muxed together. Its documentation requires matching streams, including codecs and time base. It also warns that inaccurate duration metadata can cause artifacts or gaps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the files’ stream layout, codec, time base, dimensions, frame rate, audio and duration metadata before relying on direct concatenation. If they do not match, normalize or encode them consistently, or construct a filtergraph that explicitly aligns dimensions, frame rates, timestamps and audio. Keep the background in the composition; the playlist should determine which video is active, not replace the background layer.

Operator-driven or dynamic switching

When a person or external control chooses the next source during a broadcast, the design still needs a persistent background underneath the active video. A multi-input filtergraph can represent such a composition, but the switching mechanism depends on how the sources arrive and how the operator’s choice is communicated. There is no single command that can be assumed to work for every source type or switching trigger. Design and test the control path for your setup rather than treating a fixed-file concat list as live switching.

Send the composed output to YouTube Live

  1. In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream and copy its server URL and stream key for the encoder workflow. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, include it in screenshots, or leave it visible in shared command examples. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
  2. Configure FFmpeg’s output to send the composed video, rather than an uncomposited source, to YouTube’s ingest server. Keep the stream key private.
  3. Check the current YouTube Live encoder settings for supported ingest protocols, codecs and bitrate guidance. YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS and recommends RTMPS; its guidance covers H.264, H.265 or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, a two-second keyframe interval (not exceeding four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. These are ingest recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular machine or network will deliver the stream without issues.
  4. For a scheduled broadcast, wait until the preview appears in Live Control Room and select Go live when ready. Confirm the composed image, active clip and audio in the preview before exposing the broadcast to viewers.

Test the parts that can fail

Test privately with representative clips, movement, audio and the actual switching behavior. A still test frame cannot show whether a moving clip, audio transition or source switch will behave correctly. Monitor YouTube’s preview and stream-health warnings before and during the broadcast. YouTube’s developer documentation describes private monitor streams for preview and testing, separate from the audience-facing broadcast stream: Live Streaming API overview.

  • Background disappears: check that it is the main input and the clip is overlaid on it, and confirm the still input continues to produce frames.
  • Black bars, cropping or misalignment: compare the image and clip dimensions and aspect ratios; adjust scaling, padding or placement to match the intended canvas.
  • Gap or artifact between playlist clips: verify matching streams and time bases and check duration metadata. Normalize incompatible files or use a graph that aligns their timing and streams.
  • Output freezes or stops at a clip boundary: inspect overlay end-of-file behavior and any shortest-stream setting. Decide whether to hold the last video frame, reveal the background or end output.
  • YouTube does not show a usable preview or reports a stream warning: recheck the server URL, private stream key, encoder output and current YouTube ingest recommendations; use Live Control Room’s health information to narrow down the issue.
  • Switching fails although the playlist works: a sequential concat setup does not itself provide operator-driven selection. Verify the input and control design for the live-switching workflow.

Check rights and channel rules before broadcasting

Using prerecorded clips does not remove copyright obligations. Before streaming, confirm you have the rights or permissions needed for every video, image and audio track, and review YouTube’s current live-streaming and monetization policies. Reusing material can also affect channel eligibility under YouTube’s reused-content rules; a background image or live presentation alone does not establish that a channel meets those rules. See YouTube’s current channel monetization policies and copyright guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is a YouTube channel that keeps prerecorded videos looping 24/7, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative to maintaining an FFmpeg machine and connection at home. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo keeps the uploaded videos running from the cloud, so your computer can be off. It is for uploaded videos, not a camera feed, and streams to YouTube.
